The theme for this month's HOARD is Halloween Monsters and Hunters This can be any sort of miniature figure or model on the above theme or feel free to submit miniatures off theme. If you submit a figure, they must include both front and rear art, have a proper trimming outline, and include instructions for multi-part models. Recolors and figure mods are encouraged, and even uncolored designs are welcome. No nudity or sexuality, but bloody gory and horrifying is encouraged. If you have questions about how to design your entries, like formats, resolution, and stuff like that, see the HOARD GUIDELINES in this forum category. Entries for the Hoard will be accepted until the last day of September, 2020. "Where are they coming from" "They have already killed most of the farmers. Travelers can't get through. I think we are all that's left" The refugees huddled in the church turn as they hear a pounding on the barricaded doors. "They are coming!" Boom! There is a gigantic blast at the doors and when the smoke starts to clear, a shadowy figure strolls slowly into view "I can take care of your little problem" A hero's fame is only as great as the strength of the monsters he has taken down. What monsters will come out for this hoard? Who will try to destroy them? Have fun!

Okay, are you sitting down? I think I mentioned this ages ago, but coming out of high school, the father of a couple of my friends suggested that I apply to Hallmark for an internship. In the portfolio I submitted, I had quite a few cars and inanimate objects, some landscapes, quite a few birds and cats and some portraits. I got a scholarship for college, so I did not take the internship, but they liked my work and said my portraits had promise. Page ahead 40+ years and my portrait work is not good at all. Well, I am going to attempt some figures this year, and if I intend to do that, I should start with this hoard.
We'll see how it goes
Unless I make a conscious effort, I will never get my hand and eye back
EDIT -- Face it, if it comes out badly, I can say that they are tormented and disfigured, right?

I am not much inspired by halloween this year. But the month is young. I think "tormented" is a great fallback position for designing figures.

I wish I was more familiar with Venetian folk and fairy tales. Judging by the number of skeletons found with stones jammed in the mouths, vampirism must have been a concern. Would they have thought of plague zombies? Plague doctors are always kind of spooky. And surely there must have been creatures from the sea in their mythos.
Or the most scary of all ... politicians

Well, my efforts at getting my hand and eye back are less than successful. Try and try again
On the other hand, I found that 'folklore' was the term I should have used for my search for Venetian myths. Venice marked the western end of the Silk Road. They had dealings with the Byzantines, Ottomans, the Levant and the Orient and frequently had a large portion of their population as foreigners and travelers. I don't know how much you have been exposed to foreign cultures in conversations with foreigners, but I've been in a few bars while I have traveled and when talking with folks, it becomes a 'top this' situation. Sailors, merchants and dignitaries would be one-upping each other with their tales.
So, a lot of Venetian folklore was of foreign birth. A lot, but not all. As I suspected, Sirens and Sea Snakes are involved in some of their tales. I have yet to encounter any stories before the time of Mary Shelley and the rise of Gothic Horror that dealt with Vampires, etc. There is mention of Golem tales as starting in the Ghetto, but I have yet to find any of those tales. A lot of tales about the Devil and ghosts and dead who do not remain dead. And don't forget witches. Most of the ghost stories usually involve disembodied voices, not apparitions, though they might manifest in another form, human or otherwise.
Another article dealt with how many of the European folk tales are actually Venetian tales with a local twist, but the article was woefully short of any examples.

Well, my efforts at getting my hand and eye back are less than successful. Try ................. SORRY MAN i got an idea!!! you should try to look for an italian comic horror serie!!! DAMPYR!!! it s an italian comic made from sergio bonelli editore, a very big italian company of comics..... the mc of the story is a man from the east europe that is son of a vampire and a human woman.... many stories of this character take place all around italy..... you should try to look for it .... i ve many comics.... i ll take a look in my library if i found something that is set in venice!!! you should use this as a possible hint for venetian folklore another italian way to say folklore is "storie popolari" you can even try to use it for a reserch i live around verona so not far away from venice.... but i dont have any idea of any venetian ghost story....

My sketching is horrible, but I was looking at doing 1-3 figures loosely based on these 'vampire aliens' from Doctor Who While looking up 'costuming', I found some nice paintings by Pietro Longhi, and I have yet to find the original on these Carnevale figures, but thought someone might like to do something with these

With a bit of googling I found a larger (complete) version of the image: Greetings, Zephalo

Excellent find. The colors aren't as vibrant as in the little version, but one unsharp mask later, these are beautiful, even before much additional cleanup. If someone else wants these, I would recommend cleaning up the borders before doing the unsharp mask to avoid the borders influencing the final product

With a bit of googling I found a larger (complete) version of the image: Greetings, Zephalo You distracted me, sir. I had a virtual conference today and tomorrow and had planned on filling in the 'does not apply' parts with work calls and working on my sketches. Instead I did work calls and cleaning on this set of figures. But that is more than okay. Like many of the hand-drawn sets, the fronts and backs don't exactly line up, so instead of six-pixel border on the front and ten-pixel on the back, I will probably have to make the borders bigger. I will still try to tweak the backs to line up closer to the fronts, though. EDIT -- took out a little more of the background, but I need to crash. I'll knock out a little more tomorrow, and hopefully finish up tomorrow night. Then I can start working on the color, transfer some over to being figures, with wide borders, and format so that they will be usable. Usually when I am cleaning up a vintage model, I don't worry so much about getting rid of the background completely, but with these I need to be able to do a fairly clean border. I also need to figure out what to do with the feet

Sorry, I won't be done. I haven't even re-started. Instead I've been doing a Kings Of War army with mesper's Persians. Good stuff, but my GIMP time has been spent setting up my own print layouts of his figures. I have 20 left to do before I am finished.

I was stumped for inspiration but, with Vermin King's permission, I had a bash at one of the vampire aliens he posted above. Edit: I revised her by running "cartoon" and "Sharpen" alternately a few times. I think it will read better from a little farther away, now.

Well, not a whole lot of month left ... My sketching needs work. Honestly, in the past, faces and hair were my strongest areas, but as of this weekend, they are the areas that need the most work... I might still have time to do a couple Gimp figures, which would give me a chance to try the cowboyleland method of quick and dirty backs EDIT -- Not the best, but I didn't pick a figure that would be easy. I'll know better next time.

On the backside, I still have a lot of work. She is leaning forward and everything I have tried thus far has not worked for the back of the dress from the hips up, so I used blur so I would remember it needs fixed. The drape of the dress in back, from the hips down is actually taken from the front - knees down to fake the highlight of her hips. I think that it actually works. I also need to add more hair scraggles on the back. The yoke of the dress in back was taken from another figure and adjusted. A lot of changes like the curve of the cuffs needing to go the other way, back of hands, the yoke at the rear needing to arch up, etc. made this more tedious than I was planning on. And I still need to widen borders.
I hope to finish this over lunch

I probably missed your lunch hour but if you didn't get finished my tip would be to give her as much hair as possible. It can cover a lot of stuff that is hard to draw. What I do for hair is select a lock of hair that seems "typical" and paste many copies overlapping each other. Flip it horizontally sometimes and start at the bottom and work up like shingles on a roof. You can see I did it if you look at the back of my vampire girl.

It is possible that real life may have slowed your productivity a bit. I wanted to do more myself. EDIT -- As there seem to be more ghost stories in Venice than vampire stories, here she is 'ghostified' and flipped

May I start by introducing Don Raffi di Miniaturico to you? He's a genius architect, mechanic, builder, inventor, and the scale model for the things to come. However, he's a little bit shy, and thus won't be included in the sets... Thanks to okumarts for the great mini. I took the liberty to re-color it a tiny bit... Instead of using the three extra bases for my clergy, I used Antohammer's Carnevale swordsmen and my mod of shep's mod Missing you, your wit and your insight, sir
