I'd like to propose a new category for next year's Papercuts awards, named to honor Shep.
Shep often shared his mods other artists' minis, using them in new and creative ways, and massively leveraging their original work for new applications. He added back art, changed colors, costumes and poses, and generally extended the utility of more excellent miniatures than we can possibly count. (Well, technically, we could possibly count them, but it would take a while...)
My proposal is this: that we create the Walter "Shep" Milani-Mueller Mini-Modder Award, presented for outstanding accomplishment in the modification of another artist's printable miniature. This is distinct from the existing Kit-Bash category, which focuses on altering model kits during physical construction. Entries in the Mini-Modder category would take the form of printable digital files--ideally, PDFs--rather than photos of completed, kit-bashed models.
While Shep was a leading contributor in this area, he is certainly not the only member of our community to share valuable work of this sort. Perhaps by adding this category, we can not only remember our good friend, but honor the contributions of community members whose work does not currently have a home in the Papercuts awards.
I'd be especially interested in how the creators of the original works most likely to be modded--folks like squirmydad , okumarts , printableheroes , mesper , bravesirkevin , and chiefasaur , just to name a few--would feel about the existence of this category. I know that Shep himself frequently modded David's minis and shared them here on the forum, with David's approval and encouragement. (It's possible Shep posted to the Okumarts publisher thread for Star Trek than David did!) Perhaps there's a way this kind of work can be shared that doesn't undermine the artistic and monetary value of the original creator's work?
Maybe this is a bad idea. I haven't slept, so I can't judge it objectively. But I've been thinking about both Papercuts and Shep a lot while I posted my own entry for this year, right up against the deadline. In any case, we have several months to discuss it.
