The theme for this month's HOARD is 2020 Procrastinators Hoard This can be any sort of miniature figure or model on the above theme or feel free to submit miniatures off theme. If you submit a figure, they must include both front and rear art, have a proper trimming outline, and include instructions for multi-part models. Recolors and figure mods are encouraged, and even uncolored designs are welcome. No nudity or sexuality, but bloody gory and horrifying is encouraged. If you have questions about how to design your entries, like formats, resolution, and stuff like that, see the HOARD GUIDELINES in this forum category. Entries for the Hoard will be accepted until the last day of January, 2021. That's right. It is time to put all the 2020 left-overs behind us. Anything that you started in the past and needed an excuse to finish is fair game for this, not necessarily from 2020. Frankly, it is probably better for me to have it this month instead of our usual December. As with all things 2020, December did not go according to plan and my printer died to top things off. I actually have projects from several years back that I plan on. Since this is the Year of the Ox, it seems appropriate to finish the Aurochs. Is 'Ox' a contraction of 'Aurochs'? I'll probably be able to finish the Dario House from 2020, which is going to have two options for the roof. I doubt I will be able to finish it, but I will resume work on the Rialto Bridge. Frankly, I should have gone back to it sooner. So, clean out those projects that haven't been completed and get ready for a fresh start to 2021!

Online etymologies suggest "ox" derives ultimately from the Sanskrit "uksan" via various Indo-European to early (Germanic) European languages, whereas "aurochs" seems only to go back to an Old High German/Old English root, thus is of relatively more recent derivation. "Aurochs" appears to be a compound word (unsurprising, if the German root is correct, perhaps), of "ur" (unknown meaning) and "ohso" = "ox" (the "h" seems to have been aspirated, so probably a little like the "ch" in the Scottish pronunciation of the end of "loch"). This would suggest "aurochs" is more probably an expansion of "ox".

I need to stop thinking European. Since the aurochs are mentioned as one of the few beasts that Julius Caeser feared, in his own writings, I assumed that the term originated in Europe. I do like learning things

I have another batch of old uploads I'm working on, some from 2010, then I'm back to working on current procrastinations.

Turns out my problem isn't so much procrastination as it is I can't design a good model.

There's always figures. Especially figures that need backs. Feel up to doing backs for gigantic cattle?

Cowboy is back to do the backs of cows? Sure. Where are the fronts?

I guess I didn't get as far on these as I thought I had. Back in FH166, I had started the Aurochs, Wisent and primitive horses. I thought I had more done than this. I'm not sure there is enough there to even do mirrored figures, much less backs. On the Aurochs, the bulls were black with a white eel stripe. Cows and calves were brown. The bulls were 5 1/2 to 6 feet at the shoulder.

I think I can do backs on those. Is an "eel stripe" that bit coming down from the horns? I have actually been thinking about having Aurochs in a new campaign. I don't know if my group can actually meet around a table for it, but if we can I will want these minis.

The eel stripe is the white line that runs down the spine on the bulls. I hadn't added it to the one on the top left, yet. Oops. The one at the top right has it. Each of these original images were from Re-Wilding Europe or other sites that are trying to back gene engineer from current cattle to the Auroch. EDIT --

So here are the bulls. I left one as a simple profile. The other I did the back of the head but the legs still look natural on that side so I don't think it is worth trying to change them. I am not sure if the cow and calf will turn out as well. Oh, and you may notice I tried something new. The images had a slight halo around them that I left to distinguish the dark figure from its outline, but I removed it from the portions of the figure where the deepest shadow would be. Thoughts?

Those came out real well. Will these work for your campaign? I have more images

These will be fine for my campaign. We will probably have to do it online anyway, in which case I will need a top-down.

I started school. It's a bit of a shock how much work is actually involved. I've had "lazy" jobs since 2006, and this is real work now. And it's all on the computer. So my Procastion Hoard stuff is probably not going to be ready until 2022.

That sound more like planning than procrastination.

Here are the auroch cow and calf. Again, the calf seems close enough to a profile not to need a back and in that case messing with his legs probably only makes it look worse. I got rid of the shadow from the horn that went across the cow's face as well as making a back for her head but didn't change the legs much.

Thanks for the Aurochs, cowboyleland. They look nice!
I just realized that I do have an old procrastinator project from long ago: a railroad short-line desiel locomotive. But, a) it's gonna take a long while to find that in my computer archives (backups of backups), and b) I'm hard at work on my Skytel Project. Sometime later, I hope.

There's always time for procrastination.
I still need to finish my Wild Wild West train. Thanks for the reminder.
I finally decided Wednesday night to stop waiting on availability on the printer I want and just by a piece of gosa cheap thing to tide me over while I wait for the one I want. Thursday, I was just trying to see what was available at the big four, and then I wasted a bunch of gas seeing what was in stock. At the two Office Depots I visited, the only printers they had under $200 were monochrome laser printers. Best Buy also had what looked like a throw-back HP. Staples had demos, but nothing in boxes. Walmart had one HP that looked like they ran a forklift blade through it.
Since the printer availability issue started before Christmas, I thought it was a Christmas thing, but the issue must be something else.

LOL, when I read "Walmart had one HP" the rules for "Death and Dying" immediately ran through my head.
