Hello to all!
I am a big fan of everything nautical and certain aspects of fantastic. Combining the two in terms of gaming, I really like naval wargames, especially those taking place in the age of sail and fantasy settings (Pirates of the Spanish Main, Man O'War, Uncharted Seas).
Naval wargaming however, is a niche thing (within a niche thing that is wargaming). This results in one of the highest price-per-mini ratios in the industry (another reason obviously more material spent on a single "figure").
I think paper modelling gives interesting options for ship miniatures. Ships are (unlike humans or animals) esentially geometrical bodies (or parts of them) and as such, I think, much easier to be made out of paper and looking much more natural. Pirates of the Spanish Main ships are a clear example a 2,5 D interpretation of basic ship shapes. Simple ironclad and submarine designs, I think, would be about as easy to produce by someone with basics in the paper modelling.
Options range from making completely 3D ships, to some 2.5D models, possibly in stile and size to complement the mentioned Pirates line, or even simple 2D stand-ups (though with my basic drawing skills, I could make those myself).
So, what's in it for the brave soul that would venture into these waters? Apart from personal satisfaction and gratitude of fellow fantasy naval gamers not much, I'm afraid. Had I the financial resources, I probably wouldn't nag others with this shameless plea for help in the first place.
If, however, anyone feels intrigued by the whole thing, I'd be more than happy to share some more of my distorted vision and mad ideas (stuff like shore fortifications, warbaloons, seamonsters and huge burial ships of the Egyptian-like undead race carrying obelisks being just a few). But I know artist's soul is the last to endorse limitations of others' ideas, so feel free to take my commision (and any further ideas) only as an inspiration.
