Here is something New I've been working on. I used Jim's Spartan minotaur as a template, so I would like to give a big thanks to Jim for his excellent work and making that available. Thanks! So far I've only done the front, and I think I'll make the wings as a separate attachment. I think this figure lends itself to 2.5D very well. Scruff

The big guy is looking great. If you can shift the colour of the horns so that they look more.... less flesh and more horn?

This guy is going to be great! I already see him filling the role of a bloodthirster/gargoyle for my WHQ/Heroquest games.

I like the flaming sword. The glowing hot metal is a nice touch. If you are going to do a 2.5D version, can you still make the 2D? I like the easy storage option. It saves a lot of space versus my pile of plastic and pewter.

Great suggestions guys, thanks!
I was thinking that it was becoming too red. Changing the horns will break it up a little and add more interest....I think I'm going to work on the wings also. Make them less red add another colour and I'll try and make them look battle weary. But that depends on how well my artistic talents are able to match my artistic vision.
I'll definitely do the 2D version first.

Here is my finished 2D Balrog. I'm pretty excited about him and I think the changes I made will help him to stand out on the battle field. I think this guy can do some serious damage to a questing party. Next up, the 2.5D Balrog. (wings as seperate attachment) Scruff

The horns colour change really helps define the whole chappie.
Nice - will be fun to see the 2.5D.
One thought if you place a skin texture under the colour you might get even better depth of feel to the mini.

Lord Abaddon of Wormwood I'm finished the 2.5D, but I think I'll give the skin texture suggestion a go, before I post it. I've been sticking to just vector coloring but I think a little photoshop texturing may go a long way. I think the figure is large enough to sustain the added detail. Scruff

Adding the highlights in bright orange really brought out the design. Everyone can use a big giant red demon, so this is a welcome addition. JIM

Here is the first version of the Balrog 2.5D with seperate wing attachments. This version also allows for a flightless balrog. I haven't had a chance to build this yet, but I imagine that if the wings were slightly curled forward after the initial fold away from the body, it will help it to balance.

Here is the second version of the Balrog 2.5D. This is a textured version that adds detail to the skin and the wings. The textures add a little more depth and detail but may be lost because of the darkened skin. I've got a pretty lame printer and the quality is something to be desired, so if any body builds this miniature and feels compelled to share any images, it would be greatly appreciated!

I think this will be the version (added texture to 2D) I'll add to this months (July) hoard. If anybody would rather see a different color other than red, let me know. I'll make both a red and another color (I'm leaning towards Blue) but I will only add one of them to the Hoard. Scruff

This looks GREAT!
I definitely like the textured one over the non textured!
And my first instinct for another color was blue as well...
Looking forward to more of your stuff!

I love the crackle texture on the wings. It looks very cool. This one turned out nice. Goes real well with Jim's wizard. Now all we need is a set of halflings/hobbits.

I was inspired by this demonic mini and I tried doing a sort-of lava overlay to your Balrog and, well, it looked better on the screen; Builds very nicely.

Maybe if you made the lava more transparent or played with the blending options. Nice Idea, though.

I think Jabbros' right though. Play around with the Blending options a bit and I think you'll end up with a winner. Thanks for sharing! ;D I was actually thinking about creating a different demon altogether with the lava style texturing. You beat me to it! Scruff

Got rid of goobery glow layer, reduced lava layer to 60% (multiply), made new glow layer for red lines on lava layer set to 50% (screen). Much better than my first try I believe. Thanks again for the great miniature mister Scruff. ;D
