Back in August, having noticed that Peter Dennis had released Zulu War paper soldiers, I decided to do the battle as a group game with my local gaming buddies. Somehow I thought I would put it on in September(!). More fool me! That proved to be just too much work. But since then I have realized that Jan 22, 2022 is a Saturday and that is the 142nd anniversary of the battle, so that is the new target date. I've been posting on thread on my non-Tekumel wargaming blog: lohwand.blogspot.com/search/label/Zulu%20War

Of course for completeness, you could also aim to recreate Rorke's Drift on January 22-23 as well; because obviously Isandlwana won't give you enough to do as preparations and gaming already

I was just calculating how many wagons I will need and if I use the same ratio as with the figures it is close to sixty! So I don't think I'll do that and aim for something like 30 instead, though I'm not sure there will be room on the table for even that few a number. This is where figure scale and ground scale start to clash. I am using a large table setup in a Friend's basement. 1 meter = 1 km give or take. See the proposed area below: My Isandlwana model, and tents, and wagons will need more space than is shown on this satellite image. So, I think what is going to happen is the ground scale is going to change closer to the camp..."telescoping ground scale" - it's been done before!

Actually, we all do it subconsciously to some extent. There was an excellent discussion on scaling here once, over ten years ago, that was basically a 'how do I make this work?' thing. Some folks make their buildings larger to account for figure basing. Others made buildings and terrain smaller, because the miniatures are more important. One guy tried to keep everything 'in scale' to a certain radius, letting everything outside be smaller (basically, mini-tables for where the action is). The discussion went on to maps. Some use the map to game on. Others keep the map separate, setting up scenes on the actual table. When gaming, there will always be these issues, and we all have 'coping mechanisms'. You just happen to have a situation where things get exaggerated, so it requires thought instead of the on-the-fly adjustments. I am quite interested in seeing how you work this out

Assuming that there is going to be Jungle Adventures Hoard in 2022, I have an idea for the content that might prove useful for this yours project as well. Then perhaps it'll additionally/also evolve into a whole standalone set (maybe not only with Zulu warriors but also with representatives of different tribes, like Maasai)? It would require a lot of work (more figurines of Afro-Africans with various/different poses of course) and a completely different, new colors, textures and FX - but still there is some time for it... Of course for completeness, you could also aim to recreate Rorke's Drift on January 22-23 as well; because obviously Isandlwana won't give you enough to do as preparations and gaming already Hmm... well, but then it would be good to have also a British Colonial soldiers set - and that's the problem with such ideas - quite tempting but they have a tendency to expand and kinda "unfold" over time!

uVe Musters! Latest Blog Post...uVe regiment musters to receive its bases from the Great King Cetshwayo, played in this instance by moi. Note the new, smaller bases purchased from Uline. The regiment is approximately 2000 warriors strong on 20 bases. In comparison, each company of the 1/24th will have 16 figures plus a few separate NCOs and officers, and will occupy a frontage approximately 2/3rd that of uVe when in extended order (as they will be, per Lord Chelmsford's standing orders.)
