G'day, As some of you may be aware, I am in the process of doing some Unit cards for Song of Blades and Heroes. This is something that Andrea and I have been wanting to do for some time. We had it all set up and ready to go quite a while ago, but the printer we had lined up fell through and dissappeared off the face of the earth. Initially the cards had photos of painted miniatures on them. So to cover all bases, I had to paint like crazy. Now I'm not a particularly fast painter - and not a particularly great painter, so I'm kind of glad that it fell through in that respect. But recently the idea became realistic again as Andrea teamed up with Jim. It opened up some fantastic artwork that could showcase the game and Jim's brilliant miniatures. In addition to this, we found another printer and it also gave me time to refine the design - of which I am very happy with now. I am looking at doing a test run of 36 card decks in the near future. I will limit the first printing to 50 sets just to see how popular they will be and how well they are received. Then if all goes to plan, I will continue to release new decks. At the moment I'm really concentrating on offering physical, die cut cards, but may if the demand is high, offer them in PDF form as well. Pricing is not set yet, but I am trying to keep it down to a reasonable cost. The cards can be used for drafting warbands, as references to the minis on the table or even for random dungeon encounters (shuffle the deck and draw a card when you open a room or roll a 1 etc...) Here is a sample card (Front and Back) to give you an idea of what I'm doing. Front Back So, for anyone that is interested in SoBH and One Monk's minis, which minis would you like to see in the first set. There are 36 spots available, but bear in mind, some will be used for variations. For example, you might have a Goblin leader, a goblin skirmisher and a goblin archer, with 3 different goblin miniatures representing the different stats. Sorry for the long winded post. If you have any questions, or want to suggest minis for the first release, please go ahead ;D Cheers, Ben.

Hey Ben,
Is there a ballpark pricing quote you can give us at this point in the design process?

You wouldn't be getting them shipped to Aus by chance?
Would it be worth while on cards with units that might have more than one troop of it's type assigning a set of check boxes along the bottom to show how many of that type of troop is present?

Interesting thought Abaddon. I could try it, but it might clutter the card a bit. This is where a PDF of the set would be handy. Print off what you need. They are in fact going to be shipping out to Australia, you're in luck. Onemonkeybeau, pricing as I said earlier is far from definitive at the moment. Initial estimates / ball park figure would be $10. That's in US dollars as that's what the printer works with. I have no idea what a PDF would be worth, I haven't worked out online store costs etc... But as I said all very early in regards to pricing. Sorry I can't be more certain yet. How does $10 for the set sit with you guys? Ogres, Orcs and Goblins. Got it. Trolls? Cheers, Ben.

I think $10 sounds like a fair price!
You've sold one at least!

Sounds good and if it changes it still sounds good. Trolls would be great too. They are some of my favorite Monk Models. The textures are unreal. ;D

$10 sounds like a fantastic bargain. I would go as high as $15 if needs be.

These look great. Of course, my screen name will probably hint at what I want to see available in the set, but as long as there is a pdf of this available, I'm in.

Just a quick note to say that I'm in the process of doing up a PDF of the first set of card releases.
I still have a few boring things to sort out before I can put them out there.
Printing them as physical cards is going to be a bit trickier than I had initially worked out, but still viable. I suppose it would be nice to know what people would prefer - physical cards or PDF - and why?
I was doing the PDF as a fold over - aka 4 cards to a page with their card backs. Simply score along the line, fold and glue. Trim, then place in a card sleeve or laminate. I found this was alot easier than lining up the 9 fronts and 9 backs. No matter how hard I tried, it would always be a few millimetres off - enough to annoy me.
I thought fold overs made it lots easier.
Ben.

Personally I'd prefer fronts only if the distribution is pdf. When making proxies for Magic, and when I printed out the card game from xenogears, I found it easiest to simply print out on regular printer paper and put it in a sleeve with a Magic card for backing. The sleeves have conformed backs, whihc is a must for randomness, and even 110lb cardstock isn't really a good material for shuffling by itself.
I see 3 problems with the folding idea:
1. I don't see cards glued together holding up to shuffling too well.
2. Folded cards could be too thick for card sleeves (that's just my preference).
3. Printing out 9 cards per page versus 4 saves massively on ink and paper.
The best way to do it, if possible, would be to make both options available in the pdf.
As for distribution as real cards, I'd be a happy customer with that too, just as long they are at least colse to the standard trading card size (2.5 in by 3.5 in if I remember right).

They are standard trading card size.
I have test printed on Matte photo paper and they fit the card sleeves really nicely. This makes them fairly easy to shuffle (not that you need to very often as they are unit cards - unless looking for random enemies in Song of Gold and Darkness dungeons)
I wouldn't print on cardstock as it would be far too heavy for cards, but the matt photo paper is just right.
I would assume most people would want the card backs, but for the people that don't, I was thinking of rather than doing it both ways was to not put any restrictions on the PDF so you can copy out what you want to use (like Jim does).
Thoughts? Ben.

Good idea. That way, people can just print what they need as well, rather than printing the whole set for a spare card if something happens.

Hey Boromirand Kermit!
How is this project progressing?
I'm sort of struggling with the dungeon tiles at the moment, but got into playing a few games of SBH with my son. I've also got a games night arranged with my friends tomorrow night. Going to get a game in then.
I've been thinking about Jim's Cave Trolls actually. Wondering what stats they would have. The card sample above seems similar to the Ogre stats in SBH.
I was thinking of giving my Cave Trolls something like this:
Q=3+, C=3, Big, Savage, Greedy (38 Pts)
(I WAS thinking of giving them Long Move, but that shoots the points up another 20 - up to 58 pts)
This makes them 'quicker' than Ogres, but big still gives them +1 against smaller creatures. Savage & Greedy feels in character to me. Maybe even Coward...?

Sorry, not much more progress since last time sorry. I've put alot of my free time into one of my games, Nuthin' But Net just before it's release last week. Then I have been working on Song of Fur and Buttons. Hopefully more news soon.
Ben.
PS. Lord Abaddon is right on the money, the Cave Troll is taken straight from the rulebook.
