So...what's up with the new version of WFRP? Besides the pretty art and bitz, I'm curious about the custom dice mechanic. Remember "Dicemaster" and "Dragon Dice", anybody? Those were fun in and of themselves, but as a combat/storytelling mechanic in a full-on RPG...? I was a fan of first edition and didn't feel like spending the money on all the second edition stuff (although it looked nice). Third edition seems to change everything. Anybody seen this up close?

You know, the way you said that made me remember something. Is this really any stranger than say back in the 70s (60s?) when polyhedral dice that had other than 6 sides started becoming more and more common? Yes, its different and SEEMS to do the same thing as could be done with existing dice, but I am going to have to give them the benefit of the doubt. It may not be as big a shift as way back when, but they are trying something different and for that I give them my respect.
That said, this looks like some cross between a traditional RPG and HeroQuest. I'll be watching it.

There are some enlightening videos of how the new version works up on FFG's website.

I bought this one on a lark and I almost wish I hadn't.
The custom dice mechanic is pretty nice and seems to work well. On the other hand all the bits and pieces seem virtually worthless. Many of them are Cards that you place near your character sheet that could almost as easily be written on your sheet. And ironically, despite the inclusion of (mediocre) standees and the vast amount of citadel product available, it does not lend itself well to the use of minis at all.
Basically it's $100 for a "Rules lite" system that completely ignores the popularity of the minis game. The components are certainly pretty and the dice mechanic works reasonably well, but I was pretty disappointed. Now if it had been much, much cheaper I might have thought better of it.

Its more a card/dice rpg with no tactical mini subsystem. I also dont like it.
