Hey guys, I've got a question for you. I've embarked on a new project: creating a 15mm Undead Skeletons army. My question for you is what size movement trays should I use for all the units? I'm more concerned about how many figures wide by how many deep. For archers, I'm doing 5x2, but I don't know what I'll use for swordsmen, spearmen, and glaive units.
This also begs the question of which mass-battle system I should be using. Any ideas? I'm more used to skirmish-level games.

Well, in my experience, most mass battle games at 15mm tend to worry about frontage (size of movement base) more than single models. For example, DBA/HOTT. Of course if your looking for skirmish (100 or less or other?) then that is totally different as most skirmish I have played don't rely on movement trays at all (such as LOTR and Song of...). I'm sure their must be SOME 15mm that go by unit, in a large skirmish, but I don't know of them.

Upside is that there is a "Song of.... mass battle" coming this year. Have you thought about using Savage Worlds for a nice bit of Carnage?

I guess what I'm looking for is a fantasy mass battle system in 15mm. Any good ones out there?

Lord Abaddon of Wormwood I like Savage Worlds as a skirmish system, buy I don't think it'll be all that great for mass battles. Besides, I want to use One Monk's movement trays. So, I guess I'm looking for a fantasy mass battle system that uses trays and can support 15mm models. Any ideas?

I think I might be confused here!
What I'm doing is shrinking the Undead Skeletons down to 15mm for space considerations. However, I think what I'm looking for is a 25/30mm mass fantasy battle system that I can then halve things like range and movement. I think.
I don't know. I thought it would be cool to have a full army, but at half the space. And those cool movement trays are just calling my name...
Any help from you guys would be greatly appreciated.

To be perfectly honest, the only mass battle system that uses single model elimination (so a tray basically) that I have experience with is Warhammer. That said, the current rules are very good and would be very simple to shrink to 15mm. Of course, when it comes to MASS mass battles (more than 5 units per side) your looking at 3+ hours per game.

There's the old Grenadier set, FANTASY WARRIORS. Jim's skele's would fit right in here, especially if he ever gets round to those undead mammoths and things. These are currently free, either from the yahoo group or mirleton here www.mirliton.it/fantasy-warriors-rules.php. The yahoo group is quite active as well at the moment. I have to agree with Kane about the merits of the current WHFB, but games do take an awfully long time to play. Have you tried www.freewargamesrules.co.uk ? There are a lot of fantasy sets on there. Not had chance to use any of the ones I've downloaded though yet. Actually the link on mirletons site doesn't work. try here for the rules etc. www.grenadier.it/fantasy-warriors-ruleset.php#sheetsMags

Well, after test-building some 15mm skeletons and a movement tray, I've decided to leave well enough alone and stick to 30mm. The problem was the tray, which becomes a total bear at 15mm to assemble. However, I can't resist the temptation to build a whole army, even if it's just for display purposes. So that's what I'm going to do. Thanks to everybody for the info on mass battle games. I'm still going to check them out and see if I can use them!

For 15mm scale, your probably far better off just getting a wood base for the tray and mounting with magnets. JIM
