Parduz, is the game any good? I'm thinking of adapting my skirmish system to a starship battle game.

The ship looks cool Dave! I can see how all the ships could be done in this style. As for rules, I think I remember playing Starfleet Battles with chits about 30 years ago. I had fun at the time but I've heard others complain about the system since.

Spaceship models would be awesome. I'm still trying to find that game that is fun to play without requiring a huge investment of time to learn the rules, and lets you design interesting ships from the ground up. As i've said everywhere on the web.... well, mostly on BGG ... Silent Death for me and my friends is still the BEST SPACEFIGHTER GAME even produced. It lacks the Big scale (i mean, thousand meters long spaceship with thousands of different weapons) BUT this is his strong point: ships are easy to build, fast to drive, fun to crush. Dice rolls are reduced to ONE per attack and still that single roll takes care of weapon powers, gunnery skills, shields and damage reduction. To try to give you an idea, X-Wings are the smaller fighters, the Millennium Falcon is somewhat in the middle.... so no DeathStars or Star destroyers allowed.... at least as "moveable pieces. But in that range Silent Death is simply the best. Grab a ruleset if you can, and you will be not wrong. Parduz, is the game any good? I'm thinking of adapting my skirmish system to a starship battle game. It seems a nice game. As i said, i still have to play it, but it have some original ideas, even if it is strongly fond on Star Trek without the permission to say it . For his price i think is good. I dunno how much roleplay you want to put in the space, but you COULD take a look at Powerstations. It work on two maps, one being the interior of the ships when every character is doing something, and one is the space map where the ships moves. I did'nt like it 'cause some roles are just boring (= not too much to do after the same action each turn) but it seems to be a love/hate game, and it is the only i know when you roleplay the crew while fighting on a space map. Full Thrust is somewhat i read while searching for a bigger scale game than Silend Death, and frankly it is "too much hassle". I've bought Starmada AE and it is still my biggest failure: my gaming friends still cry when they remember the day we tried it.

Sorry for the double post, but i wanted to separate the two topics: about your ship, i like it a lot. My opinion is that 2.5D could be mixed with that "crossed pieces"style (i means, your ship recall wizkids pirates boats). What i mean is that you could try to build (as example) a simple canopy that looks "3D" from the top, without having to build a full 3D model (so, it could be "cave" from the bottom... a shape similar to a upside down spoon... hope you get me). Some federation ship could be simple design (a "flat" cone for the upper disk, a cutted cylinder for the body etc..). It all depends on the scale you want. Sorry ìf i'm talking too much. It is that i'd like to have a bunch of ships like that, so i'm over excited

At one time there were some styrofoam gliders in Star Trek designs. My neighbor had them when I was growing up. To 'fly' right, they had a lot of weight in the form of a clip that went on the front. I say fly loosely, as you are mostly throwing the weight and the styrofoam goes along for the ride. You can think of them as 2.5d models.
My point is ... 2.5d Star Trek vessels should be fairly easy to design and build. If used for gaming, they would actually be small enough that 2.5d would be almost as good as 3d, without nearly as much hassle. I think of momirfarooq's Starship Battles fleet. Ouch they are fiddly to build. My vote is 2.5d.

2.5 D works for me as well. Ok. The challenge is to come up with something cool for the Federation ships this weekend. I want to have about 4 factions and at least two distinct ship designs each. The era will be Original Series. So far I think I will have Federation, Klingon, Romulan and ? . I'm at a loss as to what group I should include as the fourth faction. If all goes well I could get some of these ready for download in a week or so.

Were there any Vulcan ships in the original series? Oh, what were the blue guys with white hair with the two tentacle/antenna things on their heads?

I vote Gorn. The ship doesn't actually appear, so it could look like anything.

I am also excited by this plan. So much so that I spent/wasted the whole evening over at google images looking for an image I could "steal" for a quick mod. No such luck. I'm sure it is well withing Mr. Okum's range of abilities, but I feel like he has a whole lot on his plate.

Cowboyleland.. I love the 3d form of that Enterprise. wow.. The scale is great too. Here is what I came up with tonight. It'll need a few more tweaks, but it's close. Not bad for a few minutes work. it would be more accurate with a computer. I'm eager to keep it "chunky" looking. I think the cartoony nature sort of matches the figure style.

Curling the paper for a rounder look is easy. I like the profile on your "saucer" but I am thinking they will mostly be seen from the top in play. You could almost invert your Klingon warbird body to use as a body for the Federation ships.

It's also about keeping construction simple and suggesting rather than heavy duty building, but your point is well made. The model is mostly seen from above. some food for thought there. I'm also thinking ahead to other models such as the Reliant style or Oberth Style Fed ships. I never noticed the Klingon ship looks like an upside down Federation ship.. very cool observation.

Maybe I can mix in my Star Wars models from the ill-fated card/miniatures game. Nice models with a poorly designed game.

Well, as I said, I just couldn't let go of this idea and after surfing the web way too late last night I hit upon an idea and spent about 3hrs on it tonight. I'm not sure if this model is worth the trouble, but some of you may like it so I decided to share. Cut out disk, cut slits and glue both sides under the back to make a shallow cone. Fold and glue the "neck" leaving the tabs un-glued so you can fold them out along the edge of the white area and glue them to the underside of the disk. Fold the body in a semi-circle roll both engine tubes and glue the "arms" to themselves underneath. The tabs from the arms are attached to the body starting at the bottom edge just at the corner where the "aft curve" begins. Glue across the back too. You're done. Attachments:

Cool. I would think that red headed stick pins could be used for the round parts on the warp engines. That's much more elaborate than what I was thinking. I'm trying to get the ships down in 2-4 individual shapes max. The playtest of the ship system has been pretty good. I'm thinking of making it a Retrospace release for sometime in the new year, but I'll have some ships inspired from other sources available just for fun.

I was thinking about map pins too. And plastic lolipop sticks, but I decided to stick to paper. The tubes are not solid enough to hold pins, as is.

Eheh.... very nice design! Cut out disk, cut slits and glue both sides under the back to make a shallow cone. Dunno how it may works, but i'd try the "pinch fold" (my name): is the way BIG JIM used for the front of that "organic tentacled 2.5D spaceship".... ShaunGamer'88 used for his Manta Ships: www.mmiparchive.papermakeit.com/19%20-%20Starships_files/SG88%20MMiP%20%2319.pdf.zip...well, seems that is my method? Whatever: to make a cone with paper you have to cut out a triangle from a circle. Instead of cuttin it out, prescore it as a folt and pinch it in the middle: you'll end with an upper cone without the dent caused by gluing one part over another, and a sort of "flap" under it, that can be used as "grab" for the neck piece. It may not work 'cause the cone should be very "flat", so perhaps there's too little paper to pinch. I'm a bit worried by the arms.... if it is a pawn on a hex map chances are that they get picked up a lot. Anyway, thanks! As it is is a cute model to show around! BTW Parduz, where can I find out more about Powerstations? Google is only bringing up video game stuff. boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/12350/battlestationswww.battlestations.info/There's also a list of related links on the full bottom of the BGG page.

The ideal tool for rolling tiny round tube shapes is a Quilling tool; You can slot the paper into the end of the needle and roll it up into a tube, or fold over a microscopic glue flap.

Shuttle craft at this scale!?!?!?!? according to the "official" blueprints a OS Romulan Bird of prey is about 1/4 the length of the OS Enterprise, that would be 1/2" long to match my model. I don't know exactly how big Dave's are, but they look about the same.
