how comes the foot soldier set along? Do you include a warhorse too? (for the unit officers) Except different colors and heraldic, which different types of soldiers (weapons, poses etc.) do this set have? thanks alot for the info.
Another question is: do you intend to do a set with "heavy" infantry too? (one with metal armor and heavy helmets) What I would love to see in one of the human sets
-heavy Fighters with 2H weapons (2H axes, mauls and bihanders, so called Doppelsöldner) -Ranged units with xbow -cavalry (opulent colored feudal knights with lion or panther/griffon helmets - like in WFB, and more mundane light cavalry with lances, shield and hand weapons) -warmachines -pistoliers on horses
It would be great, if you could include such minis in your future human sets. -

I think you will find that much of what you are looking for is either on the way, or soon will be. I am working on some heavy foot soldiers with two-handed weapons right now, and many of the other things you mentioned are in the plans for my human army. If you want a better idea of what I will be doing, I recommend picking up a copy of Bellicose Fantasy Battles. I am doing miniatures for all of the armies in that book, and then I will expand from there. The light foot soldiers should be released in a week or two.

We are still working on these but my wife decided to rip up the basement so I've been a little busy. I now no longer have a game room (or put another way, it has been taken over by all the crap we have). But I have completed the layouts and cut files. I am just edging for promo pics now. Here's the proof:

These are looking really great. We've needed a fantasy human army for quite a while.

And now for the first Heavy Foot Soldier. I did them differently than the light foot soldiers. I still have a lot of different methods I want to try out, but I am learning. I think I still have some work to do on my proportions to get them too look nicer at 30mm.

Very beautiful! I like it a lot. There's only two things that seems a bit off: 1) the left part of the "visor", seems a bit off perspective 2) that foot, on the tip, have something weird, but i can't say what it is... Good, good drawing. EDIT: Found it. The right foot is "raised" while the left is flat, but the knees are almost at the same level. In fact, the right shukle (shank? what's the right word?) is shorter than the left. Now, I see two different ways to go: 1) The tipping foot makes the whole figure loose "power". A flat foot should make the figure less dynamic but more "powerful" 2) Keeping the figure dynamic, then you should: a) raise up the right knee by the same amount of the back of the foot (as the legs appears to be equally bended) b) Pull the right foot toward the left foot until the two legs looks equally long. This will make the man loose "balance", as it is when you're starting a step forward: the baricenter falls out the feet "area", and you move. Option b) is what i'd choose if you want to keep the soldier moving, or 1) to make it not moving. A little detail i'll adjust is the right leg perspective: "rotating" the armor piece a bit towards the front (and giving to the foot a bit of perspective) will remove that "precisely 90 degree" angle between the two legs.

My heart swells with joy. ;D I'm glad you like it. Edit: Aaargh! Where'd all that stuff come from? Ok more stuff to change. Thank you for the critique.

Ok, so after reviewing your comments some more, and studying my figure more carefully, I realize that this mistake may be too grievous to fix easily. It would require some redrawing, so this flaw with the legs will have to stay, but thank you for pointing this out. I will pay closer attention to it in the future.
I actually don't mind too much that there are flaws. It gives a certain human characteristic to them. That way too, when I look back 5 years from now I can compare how far I have come (that is if I am not still making all kinds of mistakes).

eheh.... No worries, Labrat. As i said, i like that soldier. The "flaws" are really little, and no one will care about it (me too) when it is on the table. I'm an avid comic reader, and there's a lot of published comics here were the artist should come here and take lessons from you.

Forget small imperfections. As my wife keeps telling me, they're only an inch and a half tall and out on the table so no one will notice. I was originally not posting my figures because I believed them to be filled with imperfections, and in the end named them Imperfect People for that very reason. Dryw the Harper

Really looking nice, Labrat! Will you be making an "army" of these, like Jim did with his elves & undead? I think it would be an excellent seller, myself. As Dryw has found out, imperfections can be readily tolerated in minis. In his figures, we call it "style," for one like this we'll chalk it up to the fact that no one maintains perfect form all the time. I'm curious what you're using for models, actually. I like how your figures here are equipped in a very efficient manner. Those fantastical blades & armor with all the hooks, curlicues, and spikes might look neat, but they'd be a bear to fight with/in. There are usually publicly-viewable galleries from SCA & similar groups, which could prove useful. - Pb

Is there a similar site for reference images of orcs, undead and dragons, because I've noticed that a lot of the available miniatures for these armies are just pure fantasy. Oh, hang on..........

True, true, 'tis fantasy we're dealing with. Still, I do like at least a nod toward function. Some of the things out there - usually from anime & manga - just make you scratch your head. Oh, and I probably should have been clearer about the use for pictures I mentioned. I was thinking they'd be a good source for poses & figure proportion of people in historically-themed combat. While I *have* met a few Knights with shiny armor, they're definitely the minority. ;D - Pb

These are looking really good Labrat. I like your "painterly" style of shading, makes the whole image appear more like a real miniature. I'm looking forward to seeing more.

Thanks for the comments guys, and gal. naked You should go to the thread about how you got your forum handle. I'd like to hear that one. As far as what I use for models, I do a lot of image searching for reference material, and I try to get ideas from movies I watch, and sometimes I just plain make it up. It's hard to narrow it down to anything specific, because I pull from all over the place. I do tend to favor more historically based equipment, but I certainly don't limit myself to it. I'm ok with doing some fantastical things as well, but I agree that many times it is a bit over the top. I will be doing a whole human army. My fear with them is that there will not be a very consistent look about them, since I am using the human army as a guinea pig to learn new methods and try to nail down a work process. I'm hoping these will be released soon. We'll have to get on Nik's case about that.

Nice! I really like the human figures I've seen so far. I downloaded the sample figures on the other site and am really happy with them, especially the swarm. I have the game book on my list of things to get this Friday. Couldn't hold out anymore with all the good reviews and great looking figures. And as one who has spent untold thousands of $ on GW games over the past 22 years just to have to "remodel" them for the next edition, I am excited about a game company that pushes paper minis enough to design and market their own. Kudos to you guys! ;D

They look nice, but I still need to build from the previous packs I bought before I can invest some more.
The different poses work great, the packs look much better than your first hordes.
