I've been dying to share some announcements about things I'm working but I didn't want to jinx things, been awfully busy and have been slightly embarrassed about not completing my Tombs pack. It seems wrong somehow to talk about other projects when there's quite a bit still in the pending pile.
I may be about to post this info in a couple of feeds, sorry. Apologies to friends on Facebook and other forums who might read something similar several times.
The Christmas and New Year's Holidays were certainly not the powerhouse of production I was hoping for. Sustained work on a computer is always hard to justify amidst social arrangements, and that frustrating human need for sleep! The Tombs pack is at that stage where it requires lots of computer time, so I'm a bit gutted that it's barely had a look-in recently, whereas I'm happy that it's been easy to secretly make doodles and art on graph paper, so the good news is that I've lined up a few more goodies...
So ... Spring 2011 may see the realisation and publication of several projects (not necessarily in this order):
1.
Bones, Tombs and Catacombs (which we've established rhymes in two different ways depending upon where you come from in the world) This is currently looking like an expansion pack with modular sections, 2D and 3D scenery (3D models: coffin, tomb, 2.5D statues, possibly a box reliquary) - as opposed to a small "mini-map" set. Lots of colouring and exact cropping still to do on this.
Work in progress thread:
cardboard-warriors.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=billiambabble&action=display&thread=2391
2.
Minor revisions and improvements to the Basic Pack (which should be available as a free update to people who have already purchased it.) - Lower priority project.
3.
At least one set of hand drawn 3D scenery (no working title as yet) - mainly elaborations of box nets. Several printable pages of cut-outs: a table, chairs, stools, feast table with benches, chests, and a set of shelves. The hand drawn art is ready for scanning, colouring and perhaps better tabs being applied (with some testing required). At the moment this one feels very achievable - which at the moment is important to me because some projects seem to drag a lot more than others, and I want to be seen as actively putting stuff "out there".
4.
Stock art packs. - Although not directly relevant here, I plan to sell a pieces or recent art work (see my DA account) as stock art for games publishers - a few dollars for complete commercial rights etc. Partly as an experiment. But don't worry - my first love is still for the floor plans!
5.
A selection of encounter or "lair" sets which include one full page of a fixed floor plan/tile with cardboard minis - showcasing guest figure artists.
I'm very excited about this because working in collaboration often makes me complete a project faster. Or at least makes me feel less lonely. Incidentally the figure artists retain full rights to their work. The sets will be very pocket-money priced, and again it's more about "getting stuff out there" - as well as providing a bit of extra publicity to very talented folk. (Okay, I lie, I intend to exploit others in order the further my own brand, mwhwhahaha)
The first of these is a Burial Mound/Skeletons Pack. I'm proud to announce that the figures are being developed by Kiladecus, whom I swore to secrecy until I was more sure of what I was doing.
(See "Undead Project" thread: cardboard-warriors.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=kiladecus&action=display&thread=2626 ) A big thanks for his work so far on the normal skeletons (and good luck with the Lizard Man skeletons, which is a brilliantly original idea!).
The second set will include a selection of pre-existing figures from the hand drawn collections of Dryw the Harper who's been impressing me with his minis seemingly rather at home exploring Sample Pack ( photos ) I'm still debating about the setting and which figures to use (so many!). Possibly a cave (or specialist dungeon location) or something outside, a forest clearing with camp, perhaps? Either monsters or bandits, but I'm still working through the numerous possibilities. Again thanks to Dryw for being patient with me.
After we finish these packs I might start snooping about for more "guest artists" (if they'll have me), but we'll see how far we get. I'll keep you all posted.
(This forum is SO cool! )
I'm open to ideas and suggestions at this stage and I'm really into the idea of building up my stock base (free, cheap, or even products with some profit) so that Inked Adventures acquires the look of an established publisher of gaming products, mainly anchored in fine art or old school styles. Naturally it's just time that's the problem!
(Curse my real-world-real-job life!)
6.
A 6x6 squares dungeon tiles pack (naturally still compatible with the modular sections), perhaps with a random dungeon generator system with cards or tables. (But this is a back-burner project)
I'm getting quite a few requests for inns and urban establishments, so they might definitely be on the cards at a later date. If not sooner as a two-three page fixed map -an Inn, that is.
There's a few other pipe dreams on the horizon, but I leave that for now. I just wanted to share what was going on, because quite a few people enjoy exploring the creative process here. I'm particularly intrigued by the idea of producing smaller projects much faster, because the feedback and rewards are so much more prompt. So maybe it's about the love, and not the money? (No!! I want to be rich, rich, I tell you! Okay, well maybe a little love on the way will be okay...)
Okay, just as a teaser, here's the pre-colour scan of the Burial Mound mentioned in point 5. It was originally more like a Long Barrow - like this older piece ( pic on DA ), but it needed widening and I wanted it to fit on both A4 and Letter formats with margins. (The squares are 1 inch = 5ft sq. the picture here is not to exact scale)
( ^ Clicky 400K )
Imagine it's a cross section into a green hill.
It was a lot of fun to draw. I think I was a little influenced by the ruins in Skara Brae, Orkneys, Scotland.
Anyhow that's all the stuff in my head and on the lists for now.
And I'm sure that by 2015 it'll all be ready.
It's good to have goals. ;D
