I'm developing a small generic skirmish game system based on an old boardgame I designed over a decade ago. I wanted to provide some free paper minis to showcase the system. Any suggestions or ideas for what kind of minis to produce that would illustrate the system for a wide variety of genres? I'm looking at about 10 minis to be included in the set. Wishlist?

I'd say there's always a reason to include pirates and ninjas in any game. (Hmm... now how to put that into Bellicose. Pirate Faeries... Ninja Orcs...)

We have not enough clues about the game, anyway this is what i'd like to play (sorted): Modern soldiers vs insurgents (say Black Hawk Down) WWII Nazi vs Germans (not alternate WWII) SWAT vs terrorist to rescue hostages Star Wars trilogy (yeah, trilogy... there's nothing more about Star Wars) Rollerball (that old movie) Starship troopers vs arachnids (from the book, not from the movie, so a few men in powersuit jumping all around throwing nuclear bombs on thousands of alien insects) Mad Max - like world (no zombies or mutated, just poor people and badass scum) Romans vs the whole europe and mediterranean peoples or Gladiators vs.... well, Gladiators - edit - Sorry, i overlooked at the "10 minis to be included".

If you want the minis to have a broad usage, maybe draw them with modern civilian clothing. This would cover most of the 20th century to the near future. Although medieval clothing would also cover all of fantasy.

Well, what does the board look like?
Are we looking at individual people or units or vehicles/armor? What scale? Skirmish or individual?
My personal favorite genres:
Pulp Prehistoric Comedy (ie Trailer Park Wars) Alt History (Tannhauser) Any horror Some Sci-Fi

I think to understand this skirmish Rule Set is quite generic and could be used for every kind of environment. So the more generic paper mini the better the use.
I would include modern citizens and military people.

Well, to get back on topic, and avoid any awkwardness, I say that modern/futuristic and fantasy are the most common and/or popular. You can NEVER have enough steampunk, or WWII punk soldiers. Some more styles I would like to see is Jim's Naxi Power Armor or Kimerlin's troops! That would be MY vote, if my vote mattered...

maybe two sets of ten: modern/near future and medieval/fantasy?
My preference would be the first, but I'll bet the most popular would be the second.

That would make sense. You can always add expansion packs later.

Hmm.. the game writing is taking a bit longer than I had hoped. I am trying to keep it Rules Lite, but there is so much temptation to complicate things. I have been playtesting this game for over 10 years now so this is more of a "final" set of rules that will sum up the concepts I've been workign on. I think I will have 12 minis in the free set, 4 will be fantasy, 4 will be sci fi and 4 will be modern. That should give enough variety for a while. Future supplements will cover things such as magic, monsters, Pulp Sci Fi, Urban Gangs and other genres. The game is played on a tabletop without a board per se.

Ironically, I have been working on a game for 10 years, too. 2000 must have been the year to make games (actually I guess I did mine in 1999)...
Anyway, I have designed MANY games, and EVERY time, I keep trying to tweak them, and all it does is ruin them!
Light is "good." My current version of the game is VERY simple, and it works VERY well.
Keep plugging away at it, and take my advice... COMPLICATED doesn't make ANYTHING better.

I've been making some progress and have been getting feedback from my playtesters with the rules set. I think I'll release the Beta Rules the second week of February. There will be a dozen free minis to get things started. I want to run a few more skirmishes with the whole rules set down in stone to see if it works or not.

I feel like I've been trying too hard! I've been working on an RPG since 1993. Of course, I have started over over a few times as that was also when I seriously started PLAYING RPGs and slowly took everything I liked from all the other games to make the current whole...but STILL.
