Now that I am hooked on paper minis, I have been having some trouble. One of the best things (after cost and ease) is that if you use the tabbed bases you can store tons of paper minis in envelopes and card sleeves. This is awesome for all the minis I have made (by made I mean printed and cut out) for general rpg play, or stuff I made up for a special one-off.
However, for some things (like the skirmish game I am always talking about) I prefer to permanently flat base my minis… I like the permanent attachment and the lack of the tab on the base. But it leads to another problem, storage. Now each mini can be as tough to store as a painted lead or plastic mini.
I think I may have found a solution…
Take some ½ thick foam tape (about $3.50 @ Home Depot)
And a pizza box (50 cents from my local pizzeria)
I ran 4 rows of two strips of tape. Each set of two strips of tape was laid out so that the butt up against each other, making a long slot in between them.
Now I can slide the minis sideways into the slot and they stay put. I took this picture with the box propped up on its side, and all the minis are held in place, even when I shake the box. Of course I do base my minis on matt board, so that they have some weight and thickness at the base. It seems like the perfect size to fit in the slot. I think if you use only cardstock for the bases (or something thicker like foam core) it might not work as well.
For me I think this will work out well, I fit a whole faction in one box with room to expand. You could even fit rows of minis base to base to get extra minis in the box. Just watch out for the inside of the lid, pizza boxes have a lip the fits into the box, put a paper mini too close to the edge and it could get mashed up.
