AllgsgBACKS by cowboyleland, on Flickr So the first thing I do when I import these to gimp is invert the image so I can work right side up. This means I had done 50 guys by the time I came to the guy with the dagger who is 3rd from the end on the top row. Despite my extensive experience, I could not get a back for him that looked at all right. If anyone can figure it out I'll buy you a beer.

These are really great! I love them! A 3/4 view like that from the back can be sort of tricky.

Scale is 1:WTF? No, really, I just follow my nose when it comes to computers so what happens to a jpg file as it comes in and out of gimp is a mystery to me and maybe the jpg was at a weird scale to start with. When I tried to scale these figs up to 30mm the lines were going off the edge of the page so I shrunk it back down to be inside the margins. I think they are about 22-25mm from foot to eyeline. People will have to scale to suit themselves.

How do you do that? I can't work out how you get the back to match so well

With the exception of the @#$% guy with the dagger, I find backs pretty easy. Mostly you are just removing detail. From the front you see a shirt, vest, pocket watch etc. I just sample a medium tone of the jacket and airbrush all that out. Airbrush in some darks and lights and you've got the back done. Replace face with hair: done! Hats you have to re-draw a bit, but I never change the outline so, since I'm starting with an inverted front, it can't help but line up. I draw in black detail (like the split at the bottom back of a jacket) with the 3 pixel blurry brush, seems to match up well.
Does that make sense?

Holy cow ! You are cranking out minis' backs faster than a Gatling gun cranks out bullets ... . Monthly Hoard of March should be saved by your diligent work, cowboyleland. Or are there any credits/copyright issues !?

He is giving Bhorist credit in all his re-works.
I hope that is okay

Dudes, I'm just doing the backs for all the stuff Revgun collected. He asked if there were any issues when he posted them and I have heard nothing. I've thrown "backs by cowboyleland" on some where I thought of it and there was space, but I take no credit and presume no rights on the fronts. Do I need to put that in so many words on the pages?

Patrick was on today and I didn't see any comments either way. I wish I knew how to reach him to ask if there is a problem.
I'm not even sure the images you did backs on aren't re-colors.
On a product that isn't for sale, that has already been re-colored, doing backs and still leaving original credit to the original author, I don't see an issue there. How can there be?
Frankly, I imagine he was glad to see his work still so popular.
I'm only guessing at that

Yeah, that's right a second sheet in just 7.5 hrs and I had supper, played cards with my kids helped with some homework and put them to bed. I'm gettin good , CowboyMonstersBACKS by cowboyleland, on Flickr and some of these took real drawing (don't look too close) I think you are right about the rights, VK. At least I assumed these were freely shared as Revgun said he held back ones that were marked as "do not share". I'm certainly not getting anything out of this but practice and kudos from you guys.

Yeah, I got all these off of free sites. I just wish I could remember who did the original mod so we can credit them. I'll go back and look, cuz the artist needs credit. They're pretty good... better now with backs. Thanks Cowboy.

No, none so far. The thing is, what we have here are mods of mods of original artwork.

Oh, I didn't want to throw stones at you, cowboyleland. I just asked myself, if it would be ok to publish your work as Monthly Hoard. It always depends on the original creators legal point of view, if they wanted their material for free and private use only, allowed to be modified, republished, transfered to another license (e.g. Creative Commons 3.0) etc. Every contributor (like you, cowboyleland) is a copyright holder by law, if he sells his work or give it away for free doesn't matter. I am always very cautious in regard to copyright questions. I've also noticed, that Patrick was online here. I am very sure, he visited this thread. No comment from him. I've found no copyright/license information on his mentioned "gwindel"-site. So it's an open question what Patrick wants for his frontside minis.

I did not feel stoned What I found on gwindel's site was "here for your use is" which itself is a translation. There is nothing I can see that explicitly says you should not pass them on, but I assume there would be issues if there was commercial gain. I need to ask what the purpose of putting things in the hoard is. I think when I'm done the last page I'm going to put all the links together at the top of the thread so people can find them. Techincally they don't qualify for the hoard as there isn't a thick enough black boarder and I have not test built, I've just been trusting the original alignments. Does the hoard require tabs? Anyway even with that very useful list, I have trouble finding things in the hoard whereas I can always search the forum. OH! And at 2am (after I posted the ghouls etc. page and did the dishes ) I think I solved the Dagger Guy problem! I'll do him and then plan to go back through everything one more time and replace the flickr docs with the new and improved versions. THEN I will post the list of links right below Rev's first post

I need to ask what the purpose of putting things in the hoard is. It's a theme-oriented, community-building tradition. I think it's dying . Your work would fill the void. Beside that Monthly Hoard maybe impractical.

Don't know abou dying, December's was . . . well attended? Anyway going through all the ones I've finished (still haven't got to the steam punk page) I'm noticing some big differences in scale AND I screwed up at one point and tried to use a copy from my flickr site and there was a bunch of pixilation. So, two questions:
Should I try to scale them all the same, if so what size.? How can I save a higher quality on Flickr?

Post by paladin on Mar 9, 2011 5:03:34 GMT -9
I don't know flickr. Seems to be limited in file/resolution size. But I've made a very pleasing test with the highest available resolutions of your ghouls and Indians on flickr. I scaled the Indians to 6x7.1 inches and the ghouls to 7x10 inches. Both blown up to 300 dpi and sharpened with Unsharp Mask (0.1, 5, 0), then saved as PNG with highest compression (level 9). You will get file sizes of about 3 to 4 MB, so they are too large to attach them here. They start to pixelate a bit at this resolution, but you will not notice when printed. Instead you see in GIMP how well they are crafted. Subtle coloring. And they are sharp. Don't worry.
The trick: use a 1 inch grid in GIMP to scale them properly. At 30 mm eyeline height a human mini should be 1 inch in height FROM FEET TO CHIN if legs and spine are straight, less if they are bend.
Hope this helps. If the scales are too different, you have to rescale them using a grid, but you can use your flickr pics. They are large enough.

Thanks, I'm glad they are working as is. Since I am reposting anyway, should I just go right to png compression 9? Does it make a difference?

The originals are jpegs ? Load them into GIMP, work with them as described and save them as PNG compression level 9. The order doesn't matter. PNG is a high quality, lossless format with good compression. It's better than jpeg.

Will do. Thanks for the info! Addition: Here is an example of adding a thicker boarder. It is just a little more work than I want to do. How do people feel about it? The little white fringe between the border and the fig is too much work for me to eliminate all together 1stNationBACKBorder by cowboyleland, on Flickr

perfect, cowboy ! The white trim is additional, bouncing surface light ;D - it gives additional contrast. Looks perfect. They pop out. I've seen Patrick as "Bhoritz" once again online. Maybe you should send him a private message to ask what he's thinking about the republishing/modding thing !? Just a suggestion. Cause it could be important, if the whole stuff is promoted on Nik's website etc. jose, wrong thread !? ;D
