To this incredible paper crafting community...
Long time follower and first time poster here. I'm writing to day to put forth an idea I've had...probably one thats been proposed before.
I really enjoy the paper minis produced here, and everyone who contributes does a really great job. I for one, love paper minis for all the typical reasons (low-cost, reproducibility, light-weight, etc.)
However, I am a gamer who is very focused on aesthetics. In addition, I am terribly incompetent when it comes to art/design and thus cannot create minis of my own (at least nothing I've ever been happy with). In addition, and again, this is most likely due to my own shortcomings, I find it difficult to mod many of the minis here without mucking the entire look up.
Perhaps there is an easier way to change color schemes to match exactly what I'm looking for, and I am just not GIMP-savvy enough to do so.
But I digress...
It seems to me, that part of the figure creation process that many posters here use involves a black and white sketch stage which is digitized.
To this end, I propose the following:
Create a dense archive of high-quality, black and white sketches of the pieces of figures.
For example:
Create 3 or so human male heads, 3 human female heads, etc. until all races are covered.
Then create a number of torsos in various poses, different types of armor, etc.
Next arms with different types of armor, etc.
Then legs....and so on and so forth.
Before creation, set a standard size for all attachment points, such that each head, set of arms and legs can match each torso. This is even more simplified by the fact that these simple B&W images can me simply scaled up or down to meet different needs as well.
At the hands of the talented modding community here, these blueprints can dramatically cut down on how much time it takes to create a quality figure (simply attach the parts you like, color how you want them, add accents [crests, different weapons, etc.] and boom...done)
As time goes on, addition of more and more parts via the HOARDS or requests will increase the number of easily created figures exponentially.
In addition, support for extra animals / monsters would be easier as well due to the fact all that is required is a high-quality sketch (the skeleton) while the detail is left to the modders to use as appropriate for their setting/game/ whatever.
Just an idea. I feel that this could really go somewhere with enough support.
Thanks for reading.
TL:DR - Make a bunch of B&W sketches of different parts so everyone can mix/match/color they way they want.
