So I've been toying with the idea of starting up a game club for a while now. I live in a rather small town with no game store close by. I don't have the capital or time to start a game store. I know there are gamers in the area. I think if they had someplace like a game club to come to, then all the old time gamers would come out of the woodworks and some newer ones would have a place to go, and I could go there and make some paper minis and get everyone addicted to them. ;D
Has anyone else ever started a club or organization such as this? If so what successes have you had, what problems have you run into, and what advice would you have for someone like me who is considering it?

Find a 'base' with a core of reliable gamers..... is there a comic shop or college nearby? Even a high school is a good start as it's far easier to get new players to join a pre-existing group, the best aprt is that the kids who start playing now all have parents young enough to have been brought up playing wargames and are desperate for something cheaper than GamesWorkshop now that they have to buy them for their kids Your main advantage is this website and your art..... put some posters up, I bet they'll get noticed

When I try to organise stuff venue is the challenge. See if there is a pub or restaurant that has an unused room on slow nights. They might let you game as long as a few of you order drinks. Paying $20/hr hopeing enough people show up to game will dampen your enthusiasm pretty quickly. If you can get some students to start a club, the relavent institution might give you some space.
Good luck!

Is there a local college? We started a Gaming Club/group through the Club Council branch of the Student Government. That way we were able to reserve rooms on campus and use large facilities for our gaming conventions. They even gave us some seed money (a loan) for initial advertising costs. The college was a good place to find gaming people.
