I'm having a blast creating the model for the June Forum Hoard, so right after I finished my most urgent tasks, I started a test build. I used Inkscape to draw the components, without even trying to unfold that sketch from Blender. By the way it looks, I think that the final model will fit in three sheets: one for the wheels "drive train," and bumper, one for the skirt, fenders and cabin and one for the cargo module. I created this thread to avoid filling the Hoard thread with development pictures.

Here are the partially assembled components. Those internal bits in the truck floor/"skirt" are there to help centering the box with the wheels.

Here's the finished test build, with a miniature to have some measure of scale. The truck is 2" wide (a bit more if including the wheels) 2.4" tall and 4.5" long. There were no showstoppers while building, but I'll have to correct some measures that are very tight, and would probably cause problems when using thicker paper.

Good start. Looks quick and easy to build. I much as I hate making round wheels, I think you should have at least 16 sided wheels. The Octagon ones don't feel round enough.

I have to agree.
I think it needs a lazer turret on the top, though

Good start. What bother me are the exposed, protruding wheels, which reduce the "i'm heavy" look it should have and instead makes it more like that wooden toys for the kids....
I'd "draw" the wheel in the texture, and if you give to the truck a "low asset" (dunno how to explain.... like the truck for racing, so very low on the ground) you could even avoid to have to build the wheels....

Tommygun and Vermin King: thanks for the comments. I'll switch to round wheels, as thes small octagonal ones weren't that easier to build. Agreed. In my original sketch, I wanted to have the protruding wheels to add the fenders over them but when I made the test build, it became clear that they would be fiddly to build and not as cool as I thought. So I was thinking that if I had the wheels inside that "skirt", I could make them part of that box. Something like this sketch:

Could just make them round ;D Good idea, not only for the skin. Looking at this picture, I can see that I could keep the basic "box with wheels" and have two pieces mounted over that: one for the cabin and another for the back, including the fenders:

As for fenders, another solution would be to have a single flat piece that sits under the cab, but over the wheels ... eh, I'll have to draw a sketch for this to make any sense.

Here are pictures of a new test build, based on a great idea from Vermin King on how to build the fenders.

You took the idea and ran with it. I like where this is going.
I'm surprised you aren't doing a work-in-progress blog on this on your own blog.

That looks great. It will be sturdier than most paper model trucks as well.

I did one last test build before starting with the textures. This version is one inch longer than before and now there's the cargo compartment. Note it was a *very* hasty build, so forgive me for all the badly glued parts (and for not building all the wheels.) Anyway, the final truck is 3" tall, 2.3" wide and 5.5" long. For the texturing, I'm planning on a blue cab and metallic cargo compartment. If time allows, I'll try to also have a military version.

Good looking truck. I like the proportions.

Gilius, I modded your truck design into a van. I added some fold over flaps to reinforce the bottom edge. Haven't attempted a test build yet, but I figured you might like to see what you inspired. EDIT: Test Build Pic

Here's the cargo compartment for the truck. Took some hours of watching references in Google Images and trying things in Gimp. [Edit: replaced the 2MB PNG with a 400kB JPG]

Excellent. This guy has so much potential. I'm surprized no one has shown their half-track version of it yet. Or the hover version. Or the Semi version. Etc.
Did I miss your textured version?

You did not miss it as he never finished that part. However, he just emailed me the files if someone wants to finish this, perhaps a UPS truck to go with the aerial transport. modular truck wip
