Very Cool! I cant wait to see the gondola or basket! Will it be enclosed or open so that miniatures can be placed inside? What plans do you have for a stand?

It looks like it's coming along very well. The finished modelf looks like it will be amazing. As a bonus, it looks like you have the geometry worked out for a rocket as well

Thank you. The gondola will be an open wood box. I'm thinking about 6 inches long (the length of the mid section)and 2.25 wide. With a 2.25 inch width, you will be able to have minis standing side by side. It will have a very simple steam engine with two Wright Flier type props to ether side of the engine. As for a flight stand, I guess I'll try and make a simple pyramid shaped cradle for it to rest on. Something you can easily remove if you want it to land.
So do you guys think there is a future for coal burning rockets? ;D

I have seen that around, it's a good one. Mine is pretty tiny. Only about 14 inches/35cm? With the Steam engine on it, you might fit 6 to 10 minis in it.

More work done. I need to redo the fins. I'm rushing this thing to get done, so the fit my be awkward but do-able. I hope to start the engine tonight?

That front end calls for one thing when I build it ... eyes and a shark mouth. Might even make an extra verticle fin and mount it on top.
Or does that sound too WWII-ish?

Anything goes inside your imagination. What are the chances of a half iron steam Zeppelin really getting off the ground.

Are you at all familiar with the artwork of Albert Robida, a 19th century French artist? You might want to google image his name and see what comes up!
Have fun! Steve

Wasn't that bicycle powered instead of steam?

I did get the engine drawn up, but I don't know if I'll build it tonight. I'm a little stiff from gardening. Middle age sucks! So the next items will be the props, bike chains and mounting frames. I think the frame will be a little bit similar to how I did the landing gear frames on the Moon Hopper. I have seen Albert Robida work over the years, but I didn't know his name. Very Jules Verne. Edit: Did some of it. Steam Engine and gearbox now done:

I just have to build this! Maybe scale to fit the luxury gondola from rattrap-productions! This model begs modding!

I wouldn't envy the task of making an exterior for the rat trap interior.
I will keep things moderately simple to match my skill level.
Excellent work Tommy, as usual

It looks great.
How do you get that dingy texture on all the metal surfaces ?

I just use metal textures from CG Textures. There are also some auto functions in Gimp that can help add grunge. Under Filters go to Artistic then see Clothify and Cartoon. www.cgtextures.com/Here is what I have today: Those little yellowish squares are spacers for parts to be mounted on top of them later.

Getting towards the finishing line WOW. Really a sculpture. Why dont make that flat "iron bars" on the sides "L" shaped (i mean, the section of them should be a "L")? It may add some strength and some "3D" without adding too much difficult in building.... .... this is just a thought; as wonderful as it is, i'll never build a thing so complex anyway

Angle Iron wouldn't make the build that much more difficult. I'll probably do that on mine. Or I might take the easy way out and stick an extra layer of card in between the two sides of the supports.
Hmmm
It should be strong enough as is unless I drop it or the cats figure out it is up on that shelf.

If I had more time I could do the L type angle iron, but I need to finish today. It would take 3 or 4 hours to design and test build it. Getting the angles right to match the triangle frame is the hard part. It is not as polished as I want, It could use another week to flesh it out. But I have too many other projects going on to work on it more anyways. Here is the finish Zeppelin. Now onto the flight stand. It will have two skins; one metal and one clouds.

I love the drive chains and the turnbuckles, and especially the way the stack sticks out to the side. Don't want no sparks igniting the gas bag!
Have fun! Steve

Done! It's midnight here too. I'll play with the page layout tomorrow. I only need one flight stand, so I wont build the cloud version. Note: The flight stand is full of gravel from the pet store. I will submit it tomorrow. Edit: I was able to fit them into 3 pdf files of 14.1 Megs total.1) Zeppelin pdf File 2) Flight Stand pdf File 3) Zeppelin Instructions pdf File png files also available. tommygun.sector-17.com/tommygun/main.php?g2_itemId=1120

This is simply wonderful, so many nice details...
Imagine a diorama with this zeppelin approaching the inventor's house... a bunch of sky pirates coming to steal a dangerous invention. Maybe with a rope from the zepellin to the house's upper deck (with a small grappling hook.)

Good golly! That's really cool. Now I need to find a game that would use that. This is simply wonderful, so many nice details... Maybe with a rope from the zepellin to the house's upper deck (with a small grappling hook.) Sounds like you have an idea for a great Papercut Award entry...
