Labrat has good historical precedent for armored moustaches. Eyebrows, too! Have fun! Steve

love them all, but the heavy armour ones are superb. Especially the moustache plate

Well I had to take a few days off due to all around business, local holidays and so forth, but I'm back in action. I have a hefty deadline for myself, so I need to get crackin'. Here is another preview of the dwarven clan coming along. These are of course ranged dwarves, sporting crossbows and hand cannons. There will be 6 of each in the set. On a side note the 10k went well this last weekend. Ran it in 45:40. That's a PR for me.

Shooty dwarves rock! Also great on the 10k! I might have made .010k, I move like a herd of turtles. Slow and purposeful;)

;D I was a big dwarf player when i played Warhammer, but its next to impossible to get Games work shop stuff out here in Thailand, or it'll cost an arm and leg for the P&P.
These are great tho, and I'm hoping, once my students have got into table top gaming I'm going to start introducing the to big war gaming and these guys will but perfect.
look forward to seeing more of your work.
Phantom.

I didn't say before, but I'm really glad you went with the big noses. Is it just me or are you bumping up the ears as well?

Yeah, that's one suggestion that I got from Parduz. Bigger noses and ears. I think they look better that way too. More dwarfy, and less human-like with their features.
I'm glad you guys are liking them. In addition to larger noses, I will be giving them larger shields. It's been pointed out to me that the shields they had originally looked like they were carrying toys. I agree. So I made the shields larger and it seems to look better.

I'm so excited about the hexagonal schield idea I tried to stick one on the preview pic of Ken's 15mm dwarves. It was too late at night to finnish it right and I gave up.
In human history, small round bucklers were popular for hundreds of years. Your original sheilds didn't strike me as small, but your eye is better than mine.

Oh yes! Delicate pencil once again, labrat! The last three dwarves on page 1 are the most dynamic, I think. Watch the detailmania!

These designs are really incredible, you should be proud. You have a lot of great detail in the armor and weapons, I can see your expanding on the designs your already have done. Keep up the great work! JIM

Thanks Jim, Tonsha, Paladin, everyone! I have made improvements over the last couple of years of doing this. I have a long ways to go, and I'm still learning a lot about my own design process. These dwarves are coming along nicely. Still not as quickly as I'd like, but I'm making steady progress. I just need to get some more releases out. It's far too long in between releases for me. That's something I definitely need to improve on for sure. A sneak peak of where I'm at:

A sneak peak of where I'm at: Very, very nice... Lovin' the sneak peak. I really like the proportions and sense of perspective. The detail level is great too... not too much, just enough to get the job done. Too much detail tends to make everything blur together.

Ok, so I finished the "inking" front and back for all of the basic dwarves today. Now I just need to paint them. Then the first dwarf set will be ready to go.
If I work hard, maybe I can get the first set done sometime early next week.

I've been putting a lot of hours in on these guys. Going through the painting process. It seems to be taking forever! It's probably because there are so many of them I guess. And then I still have to do some color variants so there will be more options.
Beards, beards, everywhere!
I need a good clan name for this first group. Any suggestions?
Maybe something like Clan Greatbeard, or the Toonkenborri clan.

Clan Grandebarba! Or Barbalonga! The latter in italian is Barbal unga. Nice similarity Throwing some related to the beard: IronBeard ( BarbaFerro) StoneBeard or RockBeard ( BarbaPietra o BarbaRoccia) BushyBeard or ThickBeard ( BarbaCespuglio o FoltaBarba)

Nice suggestions! Thanks guys. I have searched long and hard for a good chainmail pattern fill for my paintbucket. I finally found one that I like a lot, so I thought I might share it with everyone. It's a nice seamless pattern. You might need to change the size/scale depending on your application. I know I had to size it down quite a bit, and I increased the lightness to give it more contrast on a small model. But this is the original image.

Stonehammer, Ironsheild, Aluminumgadget . . . I have thought it would be cool to have dwarves replace wood with aluminum, the way we do with baseball bats, hockey sticks, siding and boats. Again, in a medieval world this makes them alien. Weird spin off when you start substituting mineral for animal and vegetable. . . woven gold underwear!

Maybe something like Clan Greatbeard, or the Toonkenborri clan. I like Toonkenborri but I don't think many people get the inside (we it is published but...) joke.

More good clan name suggestions. Thanks. That will help me with ideas for banners when I get to that part. I was looking through and there isn't much activity on the forum so far today, so I thought I'd post another preview of where I'm at in the coloring process. I'm getting pretty close to being done with the first set of dwarves. I just need to do the shading on the leather, and then paint the tunic and trousers, then create the various color options for the layered pdf. It shouldn't be too much longer, but time has been short for me lately. Work has been nuts for me and my wife lately, so when I'm not working I'm watching my girls, or trying to squeeze in some sleep before going back to work. Exercise is also a big priority for me, but I may have just freed up some time, since I just discovered that pain I was feeling in my leg when I go running is actually a stress fracture. I will have to take 2 or 3 months off running to heal. Hopefully I will get them done this weekend.

GREAT! May i suggest a couple of things? .... 1) what do you think about a darker/brownish skin tone? 2) what about a "bronze" shield (and maybe the shoulders armour too), to make the chainmail more visible? -edit- 3) ... a less hard/black/straight separation between the beard and the cheek?

GREAT! May i suggest a couple of things? .... Lol! Easily doable. Most of the armor/metal on my original coloring is steel colored. It would definitely be possible to create a variant layer with some more bronze colored items. I can do that when I'm creating various colored layers. It will just take a little more time in the process if I do. I will play with it and see how it looks. I was trying to create a nice contrast so it would have some separation at actual size, but maybe I overdid it. I don't think it will be as noticeable on the figures with brown or black beards. This one just ached for a grey beard. Thanks as always for the feedback. These changes are not too big of a deal, and since they can be done via layered pdf, it would add more value to the set.

I understand: i like more steel/silver for the dwarves than bronze.... i was just thinking on how to "enlight" more the chainmail.... .... well, Gold is another color that Dwarves like a lot, no? ;D Anyway, these was just suggestions: i like it as it is already.

Well it took me about 5 hours, but I finished the first 10 dwarves. These are a set of basic dwarves, with light to medium armor, hand weapons, and shields. Now I'll hand them over to Nik to do the formatting, and cut files. Good times! They will be available in several colors via layered pdf. I think it should be a pretty good set. Still to come: Heavy Dwarves Ranged Dwarves (crossbows and handcannons) Dwarven Command Dwarf Cannon Engineer and Medical units (medic unit with beer ;D)
