Ok... everyone is known for something here on the Forum. I am known for long posts that no one reads... it' ok... I'm fine with that! If you every read anything I have posted elsewhere, you may have seen my flight base idea. Well, I don't want to build small fans in my papercraft that allow them to float freely above the table...and I have always hated the pylon style bases. (Although Squirmydad did a great one on his Recon Hover vessel!) I came up with this idea (with some talk with other modellers) and here is what I came up with: clear plastic cups inverted under the model. There is a magnet on the bottom of the cup, and either a paper clip (SoloSpirit's idea) a thumbtack or a washer, etc. It is best NOT to use a second magnet... sometimes there are polarity issues. Here is a pic or two... Attachments:

The good thing about this is it you need the model to land, or in the case of my game, ERA OF WAR!, you and remove it quickly and easily. Another plus is the cups stack up for easy storage. I use larger ones for larger models, and smaller one accordingly. Attachments:

Now, for ADAM SOUZA's M.A.D.'s, I tried something a little different. I'm sorry if it doesn't do his model justice, but it works for me. Attachments:

Hey, they've got force fields! ;D

Yeah, I thought of that... kinda like the Droideka from Star Wars. They pretty much stack so they don't get too beat up (at least in theory)!

I've seen bases made from the stem of a disposable plastic wine glass, but I like the way yours (theoretically) stack and protect the model.

Actually, if you do a "soft-stack" and don't crush the pieces, it works very well.
As Glenn Williams once teased me, "I hope no one gets thristy before the game is over." ;D

This is a great idea! Simple to use, easy to store.

That's the plan! Plus I like the fact it doesn't block line of sight.

With two magnets you can make them hover for real It would be cool for the three or four seconds that it worked For a smaller model you could do some nifty flight stands. How about an old twisted tree with a flying model zooming underneath it. Attach a rare earth magnet to a low branch and another to the flying model, then tie the flying model to the base with nylon or dental floss. Get the polarity and length of the tether right and it should float. Loads of effort and mostly pointless. I may just do it

Well, fishing line would work too, but it is pretty hard to work with... (like dental floss wouldn't be)! Yeah, I do some bizarre things, but then again, its just me. I found there are three main rules to live by: 1) Believe in yourself (even when everyone is laughing at you. Look at the Wright Brothers, Noah and Ogg (the guy that invented fire). 2) learn from your mistakes 3) to quote the great Steve Lortz: Have fun!

Here is a squad of them... What kind of little cups are these ? And yes, the forcefield effect is the first thing I thought of, and it's pretty cool

Actually, I pointed them up with having force fields. Thought it was a good idea. These cups are just some I picked up at a local store. I chose these 1 oz. Cups because they are about 25mm on the top, and about 32mm on the lip. They are durable, and keep the models off the table. I use larger ones for the larger models and the ones that actually "fly" and the smaller ones for the ones that "hover." There is no set cups you have to use. Whatever works. So I guess we will call this idea a "good" one?
