This is the development thread for a 2.5D towed howitzer, loosely based on the M102.
A few days ago I sketched the basic layout but only now I managed to print it and do a test build. Note that it is a VERY HASTY build, something like 15min. build just to see if the parts fit together.

Photo #1. I need to increase the size of some tabs... otherwise it's hard to apply glue to them and the result is a model that keeps dismantling.

I need to increase the size of the wheels but I still intend to make them flat. For the barrel, I used the same solution as the Wolverine tank from Jim, instead of a cylinder.

Well that's it for now. I have to change some lengths in at least five different parts, increase tabs and then make a new test build. That will have to wait, though, as it's past 2a.m. and I wake up in less than six hours...

Don't worry about flat wheels. I will either bulk them up with layers or I will substitute an appropriately-sized wheel and tire assembly from another build.
I really like the proportions on this.

Two things:
1) Awesome howitzer! Looking forward to the texture.
2) Where did you find the model you were using to show scale?

Thanks! I hope to be able to fix the piece sizes and texture it soon. The model is a shock trooper by Nate Augustyn (i.e. Slick's Miniatures) and can be found on the downloads section of PaperMakeIt: www.papermakeit.com/index.phpUse the "search document" option and look for "shock trooper"

Heavy duty cannon. This will work out nicely if textured. I am sure.

I wouldn't stress the tires so much. I think it would look great mounted on a vehicle like Squirmydad's new JSDF.

Here is the corrected version, without texturing. I'm finishing the textured version, and after a test build I'll post it to the forum hoard thread. By the way, CGTextures is so great... without it I'd still be trying to draw a half-decent spring...

Here are some building steps since the model ended up being a little fiddly to make. I suggest starting by glueing the double-sided parts. NOTE: do not glue the tires!

While you wait for the pieces to dry, I suggest assembling the cannon and cannon support. The reason is because they are probably the two most "fiddly" parts so it's better to tackle them while you have patience

Glue the pieces that make up the cannon, then glue the green support. Use the lines drawn on the sides of the back cannon piece as a guide. Afterwards, glue the springs so that they are leveled with the other support, as in the picture.

That should be enough if you intend to mount the howitzer on a vehicle like Kiladecus suggested. Otherwise, the next step is building the base. Start by closing the coffin-shaped base with the bigger prismatic shape.

The front part of the base is built in a similar way.

Cut the slit marked on the wheels and stick the axle through one of them. Glue the axle and wheel together, then finish cutting the wheel contour.

Stick the axle through the slits on the front box of the base and glue the other wheel just like before. I recommend cutting out most of the contour of the wheel before glueing, then finishing the job.

And here's a picture of the finished model. I forgot to edge it before taking the picture...

Nice!

Beautiful. There is plenty of room on there to duplicate the tires, so that's the way I will do it to thicken them up. Probably just an outer ring for the outside layer so that the wheel looks inset.
Thanks
