My printer is toast so I'm playing in 3D. I really like the look of wheeled AFV's and how so many are purpose-built for specialist roles and how mission purposes influences their design. My Italian friends need some lovin' so I've cobbled up some Otobreda Pumas in both 4x4 and 6x6 variety. I'd like to make a Centauro as well, really cool looking piece of armor. I've always disliked making wheels for papermodels, yet I keep designing wheeled vehicles...I finally figured out what the influence was;

Have you ever considered doing something Sci-Fi-ish with the triangular tank tread configuration at all wheel locations? The models I have with those seemed to be easier than round wheels.
Round wheels really don't bother me, though. I had to come up with a system

Something like Ebbles Itoyo 950 tread units but beefier?

Exactly. Maybe not right for this vehicle, but if you are looking to do something without wheels, the concept might work.
BTW -- the lines on this are sleek. The Ferrari of AFV's.
The vehicle in the poster has some interesting lines, too. Is there a 3d model of it out on the net? Or at least a 3-view?
NM-- now that I see other views I remember it. 3 wheels at each wheel location. Ouch. But the lines on the vehicle are good.

That AFV has stuck with me for years..... the shape of the windows, the wheels, all snuck into drawings and models I've made over the years.

Awesome work, Squirmydad (as usual).
Cool find, Parduz!
Vermin King, maybe instead of triangular treads/tracks... maybe a trapazoidal shape that is tapered from the top and widens at the base. That might look better on this particular model.
Just my input...

If we're going to Sci-fi, why not "lifters"? Sort of horizontal wheels, basically making them hovering at half a meter high?

I got this 2-way view of a future Brazilian-Italian APC that is "on hold" on my drawing table for some six months, maybe I can use Squirmdad's parts to see if I can get anywhere with it: Attachments:

Hey Hackbarth-are those measurements in the pic in millimeters or centimeters? Also, what's that vehicle called?

Hey Hackbarth-are those measurements in the pic in millimeters or centimeters? Also, what's that vehicle called? This is the VBTP (Portuguese for Armored Personnel Carrier Vehicle) "Guarani". It was standard to name our AFV with a Snake motif (Urutu (Boa), Cascavel (Rattlesnake)...), but this one is named on a Native Tribe. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VBTP-MRwww.defenseindustrydaily.com/VBTP-A-New-APC-for-Brazil-06048/Strangely, the measures are in millimeters. The vehicle is 6.9m long (23 feet?) .

I guessed it millimeters, thanks. In 1/48th scale that comes in at about 144mm in length, and looks kind of like this; The different colors denote different components, they're just that way to help me keep track of things. I didn't notice that bevel on the bow corners until I compared the Guarani and Urutu pictures, so it looks like I made a Urutu, my bad. If you like, I can unfold this and post the blank version for somebody else to detail and texture. Like I said, my printer's broken, so without the ability to print and play with things the desire to color them is lacking.

So fast... HOW? 30 minutes for what I have dragged my feet for months thinking how to tackle this... Please do unfold this! I think I can texture this in less time than I spent trying to trace the geometry.

Annnnnd here ya go; dl.dropbox.com/u/2320000/Brazil/Urutu%20Layouts.zip3d is the easy part, boxy vehicles even easier, texturing is my slow weak point, have fun! * I think like a sculptor with 3d; I take block and start chopping bits off and sticking little bits on. I do a lot of foam-carving work for theatres and I try to apply the same mindset to 3d cgi. There are probably easier ways to do this, I've just never taken the time to learn them.

Ok, now i really dream about an HUMMVEE made by you artists... There's already a really good humvee-ish model available here; www.worldworksgames.com/store/index.php?view=product&product=189That comes in multiple colors, with weapons, and with two other vehicles, one of the best bargains around. <thumbup> Here's what they look like with figures;
