Well, I've now purchased several of the Avalon Models minis on RPGNow and I must say that I'm a bit disappointed. The First set I purchased was the emergency responders, and they were rather bland and not very inspiring. Still, I believe in supporting the hobby so I purchased another set -- the dwarves, and these were beautiful and well executed! So, today I purchased the 'just released' Alien Bugs..and hmmmm The colors appear far too washed out and to bright. I plan to darken my set by taking screenshots and editing in Photoshop but I don't understand why they are so bland and faded. lh4.googleusercontent.com/-FTYyTzxa10o/TzqcT7voreI/AAAAAAAAADo/z7SQKPkrfbU/s639/bugs.jpgI love the art just not the quality of the process. Could this be addressed? Also, are there different artists contributing to the production line? KB

... Also, are there different artists contributing to the production line? KB Yes. Robert Hemminger for "First Responders" ( not very good, imho ), "Heroes & Villains" ( mmm ... OK, yet imho ) and "Alien Bugs" ( something annoying lovecraftian, I think probably the prospect ) Ricky Hunter for "Adventurers" ( good ) Dale Raymond Lerette for "Skeletons" ( as first responders ) and "Security Droids" ( a little better ) Chantal Fournier for the very good dwarfs. I guess the quality will rise with the next paper miniatures by Adam Steel ( aka darkmook ) edit: very good dwarfs in this context. Because then the labrat's dwarves are the gods of paper dwarves. ;D

KB I will have to look into why the images are getting blured so much when we PDF the file. it might have something to do with the transfer of the image from one bit of saftware to another. I might have to try a new format and see how that works. There are different artist for set, and we have just hired three more, so the gaol of to offer all sort of different style and looks. Most though have little experience in buiulding a fpaper mini, so it may be a learning curve for some. Rob Avalon Games

Rob,
Is there any way to receive a copy of the Bugs in 'non pdf"? I love the minis, just not the quality of the produced effort (i.e., the pdf version).

I seem to have found the issue. When we just cliped and pasted the image from Illustrator the images get a bit faded. So I have instead, as a test, exported one of the image as a PGN file. This then keep the image sharp and clean.
So with that in mind I will go back and re-work the whole file this weekend and then send out an updated version to all that have bought the set.
I may have to do that with all the sets, I have to check them all still. You should though get an email from RPGNow with an updated link to the new set this weekend sometime.

I place here too ( it is on rpgnow ) my impressions about the set.

I like "combining a tabletop miniature game with an RPG setting" idea.
I like it even more when it is a hard sci-fi ( military sci-fi ) setting.
But now I can't give any "objective" impression about whole product. I need to read everything with time, think (if not prove) about functioning ...
imho it will be a very good product. Now it's only "five star" without review/impressions.
I think that the product has not been entirely presented. This isn't a criticism.
A 42 MB file, filled with game components, support components ... all very beautiful and useful ...
Twelve ( great ) heavy Terran Marines from Adam STEEL ( plus fifteen Too-Nia Warriors, plus cards, plus templates, plus, obviously, rules to try ... )
Thanks very much Rob.
PS: primarily this is a paper figures' forum. ;D ;D ;D

I ask 'cause.... uhm... oh well, i was really disappointed by some Avalon products i bought (now i don't want to sound harsh, this is a place built with inspiration, art efforts, compliments and critics) and so i'd like to know how this one is compared to other games, or minigames.

I understand where you are coming from Parduz. I think some of their products are great... some are "ok at best" and some are not very good at all. I think the biggest thing is there are different artists for each set. I look at their company as a "professional" version of the forum Hoards here. I know this may not sound very nice, but I REALLY like some artist's work, and others... well... That is just my opinion... I have the Wizards in my queue of things to buy. The Adam Steel figures... Are they part of the Nova Blast set? I can't get enough of "Darkmook's" figures!

Sorry, Parduz. In this period I have no free time to test the rules ( this is the reason for comments' lack. First I test and after review ) But there is the free copy ( rules are complete ) www.rpgnow.com/product/100636/Nova-Blast-Core%2C-Free-PreviewSo you can try it. In the core edition there are complete rules ( same as above ), a campaign setting book, "The Fringe" ( a sourcebook for use with Nova Blast and Infinite Futures RPG ) and a components book ( with cards, range templates, paper minis ... ). kiladecus: Yes. Twelve. ;D

New May releases: - Nova Blast Marine Source Book - Nova Blast Too-Nia Source Book and ( free ) Game Geek n° 29 Ok I haven't yet played "Nova Blast" ( but I haven't played yet even "Into the Fray", "Lost Reich", "Katana Schoolgirls vs Zombie Furries" ... ) but, after a couple of fast reads, it seems that these rules work well imho. And these new expansions enhance gameplay. New cards, new scenarios and new paper minis ( for terran marines ). A clear good job. Game Geek n° 29 is filled with free stuff ( red color version of the new terran marines with their heavy weapon, and a whole set, eleven figures, of paper miniatures - '30s gangsters. Not the best but at least decent/good, imho ) PS: @rob 1 - In new cards there are new "front" arts for, I suppouse, new terran marines' paper minis ( comm-op, new officers, psycher, marines in battle armor ... ) - ok this is right for too-nia too, but I love terran marines ;D - I hope that will come out even the proper miniatures. 2- In "Nova Blast Marine Source Book" there is not the print friendly version ( like for too-nia source book ). Will it be released? [edit] 3- Is there no ( small ) preview about Liz Clarke's "Mages"? ;D

I had the same "faded" problem with my copy of the Dungeon Adventures set. I have got to say that the miniatures were VERY well drawn, but the blacks were light grey and so forth.
At first I thought that it was my printer... but then I noticed that the black tabs they were standing on were truly black. The figures themselves just looked faded (a very good description).
I know that when I have submitted things to the Hoard in the past, we have had the same issue with my "work." (Thanks to Adam Souza, Sir Rob 01 and Sammo for all of their "clean-up" work).
I would like to see a "corrected" version of this set. The figures are too good to be left in the dark (so to speak).

Yes each month there will be more expansions with more figures, cards, and goodies for Nova Blast.
I will check on the file issues tonight, I uploaded them all, but One Book may have had an issue with attaching them.
As for thr Fade issue, what set are we talking about?

This one... www.rpgnow.com/product/98360/Avalon-Models%2C-AdventurersIn this picture, you can see what I mean compared to the other figures... yours looks "washed out" compared to the other ones... Aside from the "fading" issue, I LOVE the set. I even rated it giving 5 out of 5 stars... just the fading issue. (Honestly, I really like some of your sets, and this is the first time I have printed any of them. I will print more of the sets I have purchased from you as I get the chance, but it seems like there have been other sets with this same problem). Attachments:

I should have been in bed HOURS ago... I just wanted to let you know what I am talking about. Here is a *little* better picture. Here are some other figures, mixed in with yours. These were all printed out on the same printer and some of these were printed out AFTER I printed yours, so I know I wasn't low on ink. Here are various figures from Jabbro Jones, Ashton Sperry, Sammo (Moss Games), Adam Souza, Sanity Studios, Dryw the Harper, and... Oh, me. Just a quick example of your fine work, just "faded" colors. I hope this helps...

Just a quick example of your fine work, just "faded" colors. As there is obviously no problem with ink and printer (other figurines looks pretty good) - and as whole(!) mentioned figurines looks washed / pale (not just black outlines) I'd vote that faded / washed colors might be caused with color-modes conversion (ie. CMYK/LAB=>RGB etc) somewhere on sheet assembling (ie. importing figurines from separate files) or PDF preparation (some specific color profile attachment?) stages. In case problems only with black (it is tough to precisely judge based on attached photos), which might also results with some loss of contrast and brightness, problem might be in lack of or wrongly implemented black "overlay" (ex. when preparing for printed publishing black color layer should be always on top of other layers and in "multiply" mode set on - plus when working with Photoshop it is good habit to put some different (even white!) color layer directly below black color layer - it's helpful especially when there are huge parts of picture filled with black color). You could fix it to some extent (usually with PS/GIMP help) but it would be much easier / faster if done by publisher imho. Anyway - just my 2 cents

Hemdog, I sure hope that you don't find any of my posts rude or anything... I just was trying to point a small problem out. This set is AMAZING, it just needs a "boost." I think that Mesper is spot-on with his advice. (Mesper, I am sorry I didn't have any of your figures in the picture... I just grabbed some figures at random).

All comments are welcome. I understand the fade issue, but I think it comes from the artist's process when they send in the figure art. Some worked in Photoshop and Illustrator, some in other soflware.
Some of the issues also come from converting the images into an Acrobat PDF, for some reason the resolution drops off.
Issues I will have to figure out.
My own figures are done in Illustrator and come out with a bit better color and line, but even they can get the fade effect.
its just going to take some time to figure it all out I think ;-( More work to do...

I sent an email, but it may be that for whatever reason we are not connecting. Rob Avalon Games Yes. Thanks. After a few months I have found it. I don't know, my fault, why you used one my e-mail address ( unused by me. My main e-mail address is connected to Avalon Games newsletters, and, of course, it is in this forum, on rpgnow ... ). Ok. Another bunch of AG interesting ( for me ) products was released. - " AvalonModels, Heroes and Villains 4". Paper miniatures ( this set has, imho, usual color/resolution/layout problems but good ideas ) and now I understand why so many superheroes. :-D :-D ;-D - " Heroes Wear Masks". Pathfinder system in superheroes' setting. A great product. Certainly, imho, ut must be refined but already a great job now. - The free Game Geek n° 30 - ( some days ago ) first e xpansion for the Sci-Fi Walker Tank. Overall quality there is in all these products. Good game mechanics, complete systems, well-designed schedules ... ... And passion can be seen even more ( free products, many extras included in these products ... ) So I do not understand why the last point is often missing. Graphic quality. For me the average value remains high but they only needed the last step to be considered by everyone to the top.
