Here's one of the cowling designs I've been working on. This is the "hot rod" version with all of the panels removed to save weight. This doesn't have any weathering or final shading yet, but I'm pretty happy with it.

That looks really good and has a nice 3D effect to it! I love the amount of detail you've put into the skimmer so far, that panel with the wires showing looks really neat! ;D

Seems like the front should be more open.

Yes, it's the flat-faced version of the front of the thruster. There'll also be a hollow version. What do you mean by more open? To give you an idea of where I'm coming from, I'm using Star Wars podracers as one of my references for this model. Check out Sebulba's engines here. There are much better looks at them in the movie itself, but it's just like a radiator grill on the front of a car.

LOL Funny enough I was just going to post a comment the other day and say that all you'd have to do is throw a power coupling and two cables on it and you'd have a podracer. Lol I think the thing that kept me from posting it was I told myself the podracer appearance just has to be a coincidence, Lol what would we do with out Star Wars! ;D Is the skimmer still in the works?

That's strange cause I could have sworn there was a scene where someone working on an engine got sucked through one of the engines and thrown out the other side.
At any rate, I was thinking more about jet engines than podracer engines when I made that post.

There are some podracers like that, too. A more jet engine-like cowling is also part of the plan, as an optional component. Check out the concept images on page 1 of this thread. Is the skimmer still in the works? I've been working on it today. Let's see if I can keep the momentum going.

I don't know how I missed this. BTW, I know they are optional but that guy must have one hell of a commute. Road rage must be a serious problem on that planet.

I am sure once this project is complete, you will have modified SOLID STATE rules for racing these, right?

Nah, I wouldn't count on that. Solid State War was a big flop for me.

Wow, lots left to do. Many of the smaller parts are in good shape, but I haven't really touched the main components. There are no parts of this model that I can cover with a prepared brick wall or something like that, so I need to hand-draw everything.

Well definitly take your time, don't want ya to get too burnt out on texturing the skimmer, Lol.

Another component of the Skimmer has a base skin. This is the "stripped" version of the thruster nozzle (the back of the engine), showing some of my design notes and the start of some weathering effects. I'll add panels on top of this eventually.

Nice work so far, that looks really good! I'm really liking that purple glow effect, it looks really sweet! ;D

I'll offer some other colors for the jet flares, too.

I'll try to get the usual suspects: red, orange, yellow, white, blue.

Not to revive a possibly dead thread/model, but I got to thinking about this model the other day and was wandering if it ended up going any further in the design process or if there just wasn't enough interest to keep it going? Personally I really liked were this model was going, lol!
