I've looked through all the island native figures and found them not a good fit for me (usually not enough of some type: female, natural-armor-clad, etc.)
So I'm considering a commission for 1 sheet of miniatures. I love the look of most of the new stuff on these boards - Okum, Dryw, One Monk, etc.
Here's the idea: I prime the pump offering some bootstrap cash to build a set, say $50.00(?) which the author is then free to keep the rights to the package for sale as well. I just get the first copy.
Does this make any sense?
I'm looking for 12 figures, 4 generic and 2 specials from each of two related island native tribes described in "The Isle of the Sea Drake" by Goodman Games www.rpgnow.com/product_info.php?products_id=58388
From the adventure free sample text: watermark.rpgnow.com/pdf_previews/58388-sample.pdf
"Today, they are the Coyomi and Comiqui, respectively, and bitter enemies. The Comiqui tend to paint their faces like skulls and bear many scars, while the Coyomi prefer ornate tattoos of natural animals."
Example armor for generic Comiqui: "... one in armor of thick cotton and carrying a bow, another wears heavier armor made from the azure shells of oversize crabs and carries a huge club, and the third is a quarterstaff-wielding woman in a cloak of eagle feathers. All three natives have their faces painted like skulls."
Assuming this makes sense, I'd send the descriptions of the special characters for each tribe separately, but here's an example of a village witch:
"The exotic woman before you seems to glide rather than walk. Her hips roll with seductive ease, and her dyed red hair frames a perfect, heart-shaped face. The womanโs lidded eyes are aloof, as if she is accustomed to the attention of men and the envy of women. Snake tattoos twine up her arms, and her thin cotton dress clings to every curve like a jealous lover." There is a hand-out drawing of her, but that doesn't really matter, it wouldn't be needed with figure.
Despite not finding something I like, I'm not picky - once the artist has descriptions, (s)he would have complete creative control - no need for rounds of approvals. The cargo-cult nature of these figures would be perfect for pulp as well as fantasy... I don't need lots of color-ways or layers (the artist could add that to any retail set that is the descendent of this work.)
So - does this make sense? Is the money worth it? I'd prefer to get the figures in incremental order, paying per-figure if that's helpful. In fact, I'd add $20.00 if the three fighters described above were ready by this weekend (but I know that's probably silly...)
Oh yeah. I'll make cutfiles for the figures, which I would share with everyone.
