I've been messing around with Eli Patoroch's 40K vehicles for a little while and discovered that when opened in Illustrator it retains all of its parts which makes them really easy to edit. These are the most time consuming models I've ever built and having built everything that Ebbles has produced that is saying a lot!! My first attempt is the fully three dimensional Rhino MKII with interiors I'm almost finished with it and I plan on making it terrain as the doors really don't stay shut. I plan on recreating GW's Battlescape using WWG Hinterland My current model is the Razorback MKII and I'm making one of each turret - Twinlinked Heavy Bolter
- Twinlinked Las Cannon
- Twinlinked Multi-Melta
- Las Cannon and twinlinked Plasma.
For this one (unlike the one in the pictures above) I scanned in images from my Codex and water transfers and made vectored symbols as I am making Harald Deathwolf's great company and those symbols are just not readily available. This is my Long Fang Razorback MKII. I plan on making one for my Elites as well but give the option to replace the turret with the radar dish from the Domcles. Problems I have with these models is that the instructions are scattered over several models. So you may be looking for what to do with part 23 but it won't show you. You have to look at a similar model find a part that matches it (but it may be called part 38) and hope it is shown on the picture. I plan on making a new set of instructions with each part having the same number system. So part 23 will be part 23 on all the MKII chasis (or all tanks but the Land Raider). More to come.

I've seen final builds of many of his models, but have never done one myself. Being able to edit the parts does have a lot of advantages.
Looking forward to seeing more.

Almost done! This has been a fun build and I'm sure I will do better on my second one.

Quick question: What weight card are you using? 110?

Great job! I think modifying one for that wrecked rhino scenery is a perfect idea.
Pataroch's stuff is a lot of fun to build. Lots of things to laminate though... lol. I was using cut up sprue ends for rivets...
I've built a couple Land Raiders(old and new variant), a Predator and started a Macharious super tank.

Quick question: What weight card are you using? 110? Since moving to the U.K. I've really grown found of the metric system. I say this because I really don't like the paper weight lbs. system. It has nothing to do with the thickness of the paper where gsm (grams per square meter) does. As far as I can tell 224 gsm = 151.3 lbs. That is what I'm currently using. However 110 lbs. would work as you also need .5 mm (cereal box) and 1 mm card (mat board) so these will sandwich the card stock making it very durable. Although I must say some parts are a bit unrealistic so I left them off knowing they would just end up getting ripped off. I'm going to be making some changes the the Razorback/Whirlwind/Vindicator chassis. There are a few parts that just need to be longer, and a few parts that are better from his later models that I want to switch out. Also the Twin-Linked Multi-Melta is not an option for the Space Wolves were the Twin-Linked Flamer is so I will have to take the Heavy Flamers from the Baal Predator and kit bash them into a turret for the Razorback.

Okay I'm done with my first one. Here are the major problems that I will have to fix on my next one. The cover that goes over the Heavy Bolters is too short, probably due to the thickness of my cardstock. Both sides of the Chassis is too short, again probably due to my cardstock. The small tabs that go on the door, I'm going to redesign them to go through the door, glued on from the back. This will increase their stability. On the half built Rhino I made they all broke off. I messed the tracks up big time. They seem longer than they need to be. I have parts left over due to them not being on the instructions.

Looks really good to me. Even though you pointed out errors, I'm having difficulty spotting them.

That looks pretty damn cool. Better than most of the half arsed paint jobs you see at the local gaming shop.

Give it a coating of cheap hairspray (i normally use cheap $1 store hairspray) and it will give it a nice shine and seal it to boot.

That's an amazing job of detailing and shows the potential for card stock models.
Close ups magnify the flaws for you. Could you pull back about 3 feet (What Mel Ebbles calls tablevision) and photograph, then let us see it? I'll bet most of what you see as flaws, we couldn't even pick out at the range we'd see it on the table.

Dragnoz mentioned hairpray to coat it and protect it. That is used by quite a few modelers.
Other coatings used with some regularity is Future floor polish sprayed on ( caution! don't use that spray bottle for anything else), which leaves a glossier surface.
Krylon spray matte finish, which, of course, leaves a matte finish.
You probably should do something to protect the model

Eli Patoroch has just uploaded a ton more models! Several Dreadnoughts, and Rhino chassis with all the options (Razorback, Whirlwind, etc.) in one file. *Edit* In two of the files he added Demonic Wings for Chaos Dreadnoughts and a large Jump Pack for Space Marine Dreadnoughts Best to download all of the Dreadnought variants as each one has different weapons added on. Magnets could make these really cool. I'm thinking my first one will mount a 60mm base and be wrecked.

He has now remade the Rhino Mk V which includes parts to switch the one model into a Razorback or whilrwind! He has also remade his Vindicator. I'm currently building my first Land Raider which I recoloured in Illustrator to match my Space Wolves.

Getting there. Some tolerance issues, it must of been designed for thinner cardstock. If I make another I will have to add a few millimetres to a couple of parts. If I remember right I had the same issues with the Razorback.

He normally only shows a picture of the vehicle with the parts numbered like this. If the specific vehicle you downloaded did not have the instructions then you should try one of the variations of the same vehicle. i.e. 39_Razorback_LasCannon does not have instructions but the instructions for the Rhino will show you how to build it (granted the part numbers will be different but the shapes the same) as they have the same shape. The same goes for some of the Predator variants, if you go to an earlier one you will find instructions.

Well there is nothing they can do to me. I'm not offering the files, I didn't design the files, plus it is not an exact replica and after the Chapter House law suit that GW lost they have less room to bloat their over inflated chest.
The biggest thing they can use against me personally is the iconography.
I'm an old school 40K player. Back in the day they gave out plans on how to scratch build your own vehicles and terrain. Some times I wish they never went public.

i know what you mean, when people realize they can make money, they'll make you pay through the nose of every little thing. I was never a big 40K player, had the odd game here and here.. i was more a warhammer.
I do miss the games. Oh well, that's what happens when you marry and move half way around the world.

Very nice. As you are doing several laminated parts, how many pages is this?
|
|
|
Post by highlandpiper on Jul 30, 2012 21:18:11 GMT -9
eight pages but I don't have a laminator to laminate the parts. I will spray it down with flat matte spray when it is finished.
It is printed on 224 gsm cardstock and some of the parts are on 1mm mat board.
