I couldn't find the original thread, I do realize it's been forever since I've done anything with this, but I am slooowly getting back into designing. So, here's the rough layout of the Gnomish Steam Golem based on Jwagnarr's (sp?) concept sketch. It hasn't been test-built and I've only scratched the very surface of texturing this beast. I have two slightly different torsos in the package based on 12-sided and 16-sided polygons - I'd like to know which one works and looks better. There are no instructions yet. There are some small fiddly bits, which I like but may be too fiddly for others; I'd like to know if they're too fiddly - I was trying to make the limbs poseable. Any takers? ;D www.youtube.com/watch?v=IcYue8ngFWk

I'll give it a go! onemonkeybeau Solid. PM me yer emaily addy and I'll send you the zip file. Legs and arms are each one page, the 12 + 16 body types each also has a page. I was indecisive at the time I started putting this together so I wanted to try both and see which looked better. Thanks, now I can get back to working on some 30mm scale recon vehicles for the Terra Force.

Okay I did a quick build this morning of the leg bits as they were troubling me and they are too fiddly for what they accomplish. I'll be redoing the arms and legs connectors as single bits with two different angles on each for some posing options. That's Photoshop work not 3D so it won't take too long. Sorry Beau, you'll be getting the ones that don't work quite right. An album with some instructional images from the test-build; s280.photobucket.com/albums/kk180/Squirmydad/Steam%20Golem/

Would this a resurgence of your hover vehicles, I was looking forward to the medium and heavy ones, got the recce ones to go with Jims initial terra force release!

Hover vehicles are in line behind these guys; onemonk.proboards89.com/index.cgi?board=micro&action=display&thread=172I'm working on the layout for the 30mm ones, then using most of the textures to make good looking 6mm versions. Actually for the hovers I was going to finish the Interceptor, which uses the same size skirt as the Recce, except it's the angled and armored version. Then get to work on the medium class APC, Light Tank, and HoverTruck (tm)- the layouts are done on all of those I just need to get back into texturing to finish them. All the mediums use the same size hover skirts so I was thinking of making this one big packet...I'll figure that out later, after I finish them. The Heavys are a tank, artillery platform, and mobile command post- they're still mostly in sketch phase as I try to figure out the build dynamics for them...much later on these.

Squirmy,
Are you doing 6mm tanks and the like? I am looking at getting into/back into this scale - mass death, whole cities of confilct... snipers able to do their job effectly.
BTW what rule set / system are you using for 6mm?
Would love to find some Ork (yes spelling) paper figures to move into 6mm as I would love to game with an green tide washing across the board.

I like Command Horizon and Dirtside.

Slow progress; I've done a little more of the test-build, and at least he's walking now. I can see that I need to replace the cylinder-parts with something like 12-sided polygon solids, beef up the joints a bit, and pretty much reduce all the curved shape cuts to multi-sided polygon cuts. Otherwise not many people are going to want to build this beastie. So at least it's a very instructional prototype. Don't worry about the build Beau, I know you are tied up with Jim's Halloween tidal wave.

The Mk1 prototype is complete; And the MK2 with extensive revisions is underway. Things that are being revised; -Minimizing the number of curved sufaces to be cut out. -Larger attachment flaps for the 2D pieces, also making them into half-hex flaps. -Discarding the 16-sided central body version, it made for too skinny side pieces. -Redoing the side pieces to be portions of a 12-sided polygon instead of a sphere (redues the flap count and makes them bigger.) -Slightly enlarging the 2D stacks, they're a little dainty right now. -Moving the arms and legs attachment points forward about 6-8mm to help with stability. -Discarding the shoulder flap variants and just using the curved ones. (pictured) Pretty easy list really. The current model works, looks kinda cool, it's unnecessarily annoying to build. One thing I do like that will remain in the next version is that the 2D pieces do allow for a bit of poseability by bending them at junctions. Like the toes that are helping it balance and bending the wrist joint up allows for a amore aggressive pose.

Nice, not hard to do a 2D version of it.
I was experimenting with it earlier this morning and was able to come up with one.
So when your done with this project could you do a 2D version of it for those that are not great with making 3D versions.

The new build checks out, texture is under way. I'm working on some kind of hammered bronze with touches of rust texture as a base. Here's a sample from one of the calf sections;

WOW!
That texture look awesome!
I think you've achieved the hammered bronze look very nicely!
Thanks for the update, squirmydad!

Hey SD,
You ever get the Mk2 retextured and built? Got any photos of of it?

Maybe someone at GW saw it and thought 'wow, that would make a really good ork dreadnought' and they made him disappear? Just like the fella who designed the hydrogen powered car or everlasting batteries. The truth is out there.

The truth is sitting on my shelf mocking me... I got the redesigns done back in November so that he builds easier and smoother...but the texturing beat me down. Models are kind of exhausting...for me anyways...but this is one of those unfinished projects that keeps rolling to the surface in my brain looking for solutions and I keep shying away from it to build other things with easier answers. I just need to sit down with this model and start crunching through it again so I can get consistent results that I'm happy with and be done with it.

Hey, I just saw this guy and he looks cool. Did you ever get him done? He could really be used as a Dwarven Clockwork soldier in Bellicose.

Holy cow! it is wonderful. It will be fantastic if the front "window" could be made transparent with a goblin inside....

I just stumbled across this design as well. This MUST be completed at any cost! Can I get a crack at texturing this bad boy?
