I like the look of the cross-pieced version also. On the uncolored version, if the triangles were blacked out and the bottom triangle totally removed, I think it would be fine. I don't think removing the bottom triangle would effect the strength of the build. Having a horizontal beam that could be placed further down might help.

Yeah, I figured out that the open box structure doesn't really hold up well anyway, so there has to be a little more "structure" under the floor. That made me redesign the whole thing. Its a little more complicated build, but it makes for a pretty strong box....and it makes the crossbeams look better and have a little more function. So I have most of the "dock" parts designed, now to texture them (should go quick as I can use most of what I've already done). I'll put up a build pic when I can.

Grendelsmother64 has a new dragon boat on his site. Four-page pdf (first page printed twice). I really like the choice of bow decorations

It's not really a "new" boat.
Just the one I posted a while ago with a few updates and some new graphics.
But I'm getting close to putting up my laketown docks and the big knarr boat, so I did some packaging graphics...and started with the old one.
Hopefully there will be a few new Laketown bits and boats up here soon.

You really set the bar high with those cars, but I'm sure things will be really, really good.

Here it is, the first part of my LakeTown project. The dock platforms. Pretty straightforward. One high, one low (not pictured here, but its in the PDF). They're textured...weathered grey boards...but I'm not gonna set up for photo's until I have enough bits to make a decent scene...coming soon though..... There's other bits to come: ramps, bridges, buildings...but you've got to put them someplace so we'll build the platforms first. Here's the link: inkjetpaperscissors.blogspot.ca/2012/06/laketown-dock-platforms.htmlHope you like, GM

Textures are very nice. I'll probably just do a few low docks until ramps and ladders are available.
Thank you.

Hey CONGRATS on your own board! ;D I noticed this right away this morning! You deserve it. BTW, are you going to have roads in LakeTown to drive your cars on? Seriously, fantastic work thus far! [Thumbs up]

Here's the next LakeTown bit: Just a spacer for the high dock, so you can have a continous post/cross-beam/post/cross-beam/post look to the thing. There's also a few larger bits of the planking texture in it for making larger flat "interior" sections if you're tired of building endless high docks. Here's the link: inkjetpaperscissors.blogspot.ca/2012/06/laketown-more-dock-bits-spacers.htmlRamps and bridges next. GM

LakeTown Bridge and Ramp Bits: So there's all the Pier bits together. The final texturing is a faded weathered grey like the bridge. So you can mix and match and come up with any size set you want. Anyone want to make a 4x8 foot table top layout? Just think of the epic coolness of that..... Here's the link for the last bits: inkjetpaperscissors.blogspot.ca/2012/06/more-laketown-dock-bits-ramp-and-bridge.htmlHope you like, GM. PS, next comes the viking like buildings.....

This is absolutely spectacular. Now what type of scenario will have japanese and viking boats together ... hmmm. I definitely know what I'm doing Sunday night when I get home. Thanks BTW, are you going to have roads in LakeTown to drive your cars on? I do believe the bus says Laketown on it ... LOL

A couple things:
1) this looks great!
2) I can see this with your building, and boats (mixed in with Graffam's).
3) Finally, where can I get a copy of that cool double-pistoled hero?

Here's the first Laketown House: Like I said, Laketown is gonna be a kinda Norse styled place, so the first house would definitely look at home in a Viking town or homestead as well. The curved roof is a little funky, just make sure to glue the roof tabs to the beam. inkjetpaperscissors.blogspot.ca/2012/06/laketown-house-number-1.htmlI've got a wagon coming up next, based on this: as soon as I get a photo..... Hope you like, GM PS: The officer with the pistols was from a promotion I did for a play. There was one for each cast member to use as web-page icons. They would make for a good set of pirates, and one day I plan to put backs on them..... And yeah...Dave's stuff is the best, isn't it? And Vermin King....you can always drive on the wooden docks...at your own risk, of course....

@grendels
This Norse-styled house is nice and idea with curved roof is cool!
If there will be more buildings (plus some stockade perhaps?) it could be possible to build small Viking settlement...
Hmm... this and your ships make me wanna release some Viking figurines -- not only warriors but also commoners -- with realistic art and with more dark color tonality, so they will match... quite tempting idea.

Thanks.
My personal take is that the internet was not invented for commerce, but for the sharing of ideas. I've got nothing against trying to make money, that's just my own personal opinion. I have a feeling though, that in an age with the entire world connected by a high speed network, coupled with instantaneous perfect fideltiy digital reproduction, the idea of intellectual property is becoming unenforceable...maybe even obsolete.
And besides, someone on FatDragon's board said my stuff "isn't professional quality". Maybe I should start charging, just to find out, eh?

I've seen 'commercial' pieces that aren't nearly as good as yours.
And you do them because of your joy in the craft.
Keep up the good work

Wow Grendlesmother, you are on fire!
(For non-native english readers, that means he is showing signs of being very inspired)
BTW I just re-read the "handles" thread looking for the origin of your alias. I actually played Hrothgar in a theatrical version of Beowulf, so I'm familiar with the character, but is there a story behind how you come to be using this name?

I second that about the quality of your work. I wasn't saying Graffam is the "best." I simply said his stuff would work well with yours. I can see his Maritime buidings on your docks! I could never say one person here is the best in any area. It is like going to the museum and saying this artist is the best. ALL works of art are great, and all unique. I enjoy your style very much, and although the only model I have had a chance to build of yours so far was the Birch Bark Canoe, I can say I love the finished look, and it was an easy build (plus it was FREE)! When determining the "quality" of a set I base it on these three criteria: 1) How does it look when finished. 2) How easy was it to build 3) How much did it cost I have already answered these things about your canoe! 1) Great! 2) Great! 3) FREE! You can't get any better than that! I am sure from looking at your images here, that this is the case with ALL of your work. About your buildings, I saw this and the theme song from "How To Train Your Dragon" started playing in my head! I could even see Toothless on the top of the house crawling down to wake Hiccup up. This is amazing work! My hat off to you, GM64! This figure would be a great figure to include in the set. Or since you mentioned pirates, you can release a pirate boat (eventually) and include the cast as the crew. In closing, I would like to leave you with this thought: A few years ago, I needed some cars for my Super Hero City (Twilight Street by Microtactix). I purchased "Dirt Cheap Vehicles" for $6.00. The cars were basically open boxes (you build it, and the tires and sides were one piece, and the botoms were completely open). Well, yours are "cheaper than "Dirt Cheap" and are MUCH nicer! Very quality stuff! I haven't built the Fat Dragon Games cars, but from what I can see, yours look every bit as good, and may be easier to build. Great job! (Sorry for the ramble).

Okay, I hope I don't offend by abbreviating your name ... GM64 did have a wooden fort on a grassy embankment available at one time. I'm not sure where I downloaded it, but when I saw the first house, I was thinking it might be time to put the fort, house and some other pieces together for a viking settlement.

I think you're thinking about the dark ages fort. It's on another thread here in my "area".
The gate tower is a log cabin like structure...kinda similar to that house.

Ah, yes, I had forgotten about that!
I was thinking how great this would be to make the pieces modular. I could glue the supports into various sizes: 3x3, 1x3, 3x6, as well as having a bunch of "loose" ones. I could simply choose one of the "larger" pieces to use as the center of the structure, and then add the ramps/docks (which would be glued as one piece like you have them pictured) that can be placed anywhere.
The buildings would remain separate, so you could build it however you see fit.
You mentioned FDG (and I have seen people's "professional" work that is far from "quality"), they have some ramps like yours that have tabs that stick up through them. This way your figures can stand, and not slide down. I think you should consider doing something like that, too. Just a thought!
ALSO, I am SO glad you went with ramps, instead of trying to build stairs! For one thing, it makes PERFECT sense with a dock, but also, I am too lazy to try to assemble them.
Finger and Toe has stairs that are basically ramps with the textures that resemble steps. SO easy to build, and looks great, too! (Another reason Glenn is my hero)!
Although you haven't achieved "hero" status in my mind yet, you have my utmost respect! I am VERY impressed with all the work you have done, and I enjoy your quality of your products, and I am so glad that you are sharing all of this with us.
... for what it's worth!
David
