Once upon a time, eight years ago actually, I thought I was a model designer. And I was, just not a very good one. One of the first big model designs I tried to tackle was this piece that was intended to be my entry for Miniatures in paper Showcase #11; It had a great number of defects but a physical copy does still survive to this day; And I've now found the old cad and photoshop files for the project. So what this means, since the original intent was to be a free project, the revived version will be entering the Christmas Wars Forum Hoard as I believe I now have the artistic and technical skills to complete it. It will be undergoing some revisions to for ease of build and general coolness as the giant water tower looks kind of dorky to me.

Curious how your modern perspective will be carried out on this

Well, it looks a lot like this; Progress and doodling pics with scattered ideas littering the digital desk...until I settled on this look; Which I'm not entirely happy with, but I am less unhappy with this look than I am with many of the other ideas that I've scribbled over the years. So now I can unfold it and throw texture and color at it.

One more tweak, a flying bridge and flared smokestacks- One of the problems I've run into with this model is that the elements never went together very well for me. That made it difficult to work on back in the beginning, and was one of the reasons that it didn't get finished. That and I was still cutting my teeth on progs like Photoshop and Pepakura and the landship project then was a mouthful I just couldn't chew. So digging it up in the present there is a part of my brain that wants to lay old projects to rest, but the other parts of my brain are looking at this and going, huh? Whatever, I'm proceeding forward with what I have, if a stroke of brilliance comes along I'll do my best to incorporate it with what I already have. edit> Name of thread changed as I finally remembered the name of the landship - "Reinhold". Named in honor of my deceased uncle; Hans Joachim Reinhold Radtke.

Unfolded and laid out, comes to 8 pages this time. First page mostly done; It's the center hull section without the gun ports.

It's a pretty fair compromise. Reminds me of the Civil War-era river craft on a late 1800s steam tractor chassis. With a bunch of armor plate.
It's gonna be big, isn't it. Just eyeballing, looks like about 7.5 inches long and almost 5 high. Interesting beast. I can almost picture it rolling through Glenn's Lincoln, NM streets. The Reinhold would definitely make it the most dangerous street in America.

Even the armor over the rear wheels reminds me of the cladding over the paddle wheels on some of the boats. Interesting project

Steve One of the best books on ACW Ironclads ever; www.amazon.com/Civil-War-Ironclads-Industrial-Mobilization/dp/0801887518/ref=reader_auth_dpI used to own it, lost it in the big house move 4+ years ago. Great details with illustrations, specifications, and AAR's from captains. Yes, I'm influenced by various Ironclad designs.

Today's update is page 2 (of 8) - big forward wheel and topside AA turret; I'll have to work on the gun barrels later, the other stuff is mostly done. I'm trying to keep the texturing simple, quick, and bright. It is a holiday landship after all. I think the gears inside the wheel look festive. edit> Finished gun and highlight, moving on to page 3.

Turkey's all 'et, time to knock out another page on the Reinhold; This is the piece, the bow section, that I couldn't get right the first time around. I've printed off the first four pages to check color and to do a little test-building so I'll see if I got it right this time.

Color layers are tweaked now so that I can also offer a basic grey version along with a Christmas red version;

Some setbacks, not disastrous, just wearying. Page #1 I had combined the rivets and plates into a single layer so I couldn't insert the red styles under the rivest like I had done on the other pages. -fixed Page #5 I thought was done until I realized that the armor plates on the conning tower upper section wouldn't match up with the plates on the lower section. -fixed Not that far from completing the whole shebang, won't hit the deadline though, also haven't test-built anything...so I'm hoping there are no huge mechanical errors to set me back again. One of the biggest differences between the old me and the new me (as pertains to model art works) is a better understanding of blend modes, and organizing my work better by using layer sets. I always keep copies of basic styles, objects, and color palettes tucked away on hidden layers so that if (when) I make a mistake the basic style hasn't been compromised. I can always go and delete the goof, copy the base, and start over with laying out bits. Years ago I painted every rivet by hand (mouse click actually) with the paint brush tool to make the little black blobs to represent rivets. Then came back over black blob with a smaler brush and painted a white dot for a highlight....Now I made one rivet, got the shape, shadow and highlight that I wanted, made a group in a row, and copied it thousands of times. Much better. The last few pages should be the easiest, here's hoping.

Page 5; My show finally opened, so I have some time for model works again. The next three pages are pretty easy, or at least they should be. I test-built the first four pages and found only minor details to fix, and fixed them. Still grinding forward...

I haven't been finding any glaring errors in my ongoing test-builds. It's composed of big chunky pieces that are designed to go together easily. Page 7, the flying bridge and an internal brace for the long hull section; Last page is just the side guns, might finish that tonight. edit> Added the access hatch.

Pile-o-parts. Had a bad head-cold the past two days, better now, slowed me down a touch from my already slow pace. 30mm and 15mm pdf's in Red, Grey and Blue colors finished. GSD's need a little tweaking, assembly pics almost done laying out for instructions. I still need a beauty shot of the final build, that'll be in the morning.

Looking very good Fully agree! Besides whole vehicle impressive project itself I especially like texturing work - adds a lot of "flavor" and immerse factor! Plus all these "skins" - very functional and multi-theme

That pile of parts has me thinking that OldschoolDM might put magnets in each so that it will store well, go together quickly, and be easily modified.
Color and texture are looking very good. At 15mm, I think I would dread making all those side guns, though.

A beautiful beast. I can hardly wait for the chunky beast to get a paint job. Each of these looks like they have a family resemblance. Great work.
