My group, the Forsite Irregulars, has defeated Stonefang and passed the mountains into the Nentir Vale. After taking care of a few loose ends (which will be detailed in the adventure log soon) they've arrived at Winterhaven, their temporary base of operations while exploring The Madness at Gardmore Abby. Although this location is 100% social encounters at this point, I couldn't resist the opportunity to build Winterhaven entirely out of 3D paper terrain. What follows are some build and some live-play shots of their session arriving at Winterhaven: Here's the map: A fan-made 3d render: To fit on the table, my build excludes the outer walls. I'm still very happy with it - it contains terrain from just about everyone who designs it: FDG, Mystic Mountian, DGM, grendelsmother64, DrywTheHarper and several others... I got every single building in (Made the tenements multiple buildings, added a support building for the Manor House, and extra barracks.) Some action shots... The Irregulars pass through the main gate into the market square: Street level shots: Much of the fun in setting up towns is the little dramatic situations you can set up in paper. It's dark between those tenements: We met today, so this is just a sample of the pictures my players will upload in the next week or two. If you're interested in following my papercraft D&D sessions, please follow The Forsite Irregulars on Obsidian Portal.

This is my favorite pic from that group. Just needs a meeting of heroes in the center.

Wow. Very impressive! I love this city-castles of paper. Make it even more figurines in the paper.

Although this location is 100% social encounters at this point, I couldn't resist the opportunity to build Winterhaven entirely out of 3D paper terrain. What follows are some build and some live-play shots of their session arriving at Winterhaven: -- snip -- Some action shots... The Irregulars pass through the main gate into the market square: -- snip -- This is my favourite - partly because I couldn't recognize at first what the figure nearest the clock tower was... My first impression was of a man waving his arms in the air, shouting Look at Me! while his dropped his drawers ... Having acquired (just this past day) ALL of Dryw's figures I was missing (AFAIK), I knew I must be wrong. I've since figured out that it is a man hawking his fish, but I did have a chuckle, and am now half-wishing Dryw would add such a crazy character to his next background set. Dryw might need some new blood, now that his dear neighbour the cat lady has been taken away On a more serious note, I am in awe of the effort you put forth for your players. I've caught a glimpse or two of your previous builds (the spiral staircase & the dwarf mountain entrance), and the glorious artwork of your player characters' party. You, and Dryw (and a couple of others here too), have inspired me, a very newbie GM, to go all out. Now if I could only get all my players together so we could actually start... Another beautiful build. It's great to see how well you capture the original design while still adding your own touches. I find that the large towns tend to be almost purely for non-combat interactions, just because of the tight quarters. They're still popular with players, and help remind folks that crossing town will take a little time. I think everyone should get the chance to see their "home" at least once.

What's super-cool is that usually this is the kind of thing that's only seen at convention demos for big games. Instead, this is your house.

What's super-cool is that usually this is the kind of thing that's only seen at convention demos for big games. Instead, this is your house. That's one of the biggest advantages to paper terrain. As long as you have the space for the table, large detailed layouts like this are really pretty easy. Your time invested in creating the terrain is no more than it would be for metal or plastic, and storage is no worse. In this specific case, I'm confident the storage is much better. I honestly think that if people just get the paper stuff in the public's eye more, the savings in time and money will guarantee it thrives. - Pb

What are the details on the ground your using? I don't seem many seems, and it has a good bit of gloss. The gloss looks it might be textured , and has a bit of a curl in places, so I assume your aren't using plexiglass over top. It almost reminds me of vinyl flooring, but then it has that grid. Whatever it is, I'm guessing its a lot less hassle than smaller tiles.

Those are flipmats: One from Paizo: paizo.com/products/btpy8oue?GameMastery-FlipMat-Village-Square (back side) and paizo.com/products/btpy8ew8?Gamescapes-Story-Maps-Battlemat-Terrain-Grasslands from Savage Mojo. The are both shiny coated board - marker safe (or so they say, I've never tested them...)
