Yesterday was my birthday, and what do you know? My Dwarven Forge Game Tiles Kickstarter arrived! So - in honor I stayed up late and made an Unboxing video complete with a build of first 3 rooms from the Catacombs under Garmore Abbey. www.youtube.com/watch?v=FdM3lfx2in4Enjoy! Happy belated Birthday! Great present you got yourself there I'm happy to see the video (watched the first half so far), and look forward to seeing what you do with them moving forward. Will you try incorporating them with your paper terrain? From what I can recall of what I've seen, most scenes of yours have been overland adventures, so there doesn't seem to be duplication. I see you got them painted - smart move! Although some people really enjoy the painting aspect, and from the demos the tiles looked great plain, and easily painted by novices. I initially backed the Dwarven Forge Kickstarter, but being in Canada, the shipping/etc. about doubled the cost. Fortunately Fat Dragon had its Halls of the Mountain King Kickstarter at the same time, and that proved a superior option for me: I bought not only that set, but E-Z Dungeons and Winterhawk as well. Just getting into (back into, in some ways) the tabletop gaming hobby, I was a blank slate. Now, I've certainly spent more than I would have on Dwarven Forge in the last few months, but a whole new hobby, not to mention a whole bunch of friendly people, have been opened up with gaming paper craft. So fortunately , I'm not as jealous as I would have been at the end of the Kickstarter. Now I've got to decide on Bones II, do I stay in @ Wave 4, or do I skip it and spend the money on paper minis?

Happy belated Birthday! Great present you got yourself there ... Now I've got to decide on Bones II, do I stay in @ Wave 4, or do I skip it and spend the money on paper minis? I love minis of all sorts, and I actually enjoy painting - but avoiding the Reaper Kickstarters has been no problem for me. I only have time to buy/build the things I need to use for my game in the next week or two. I've picked up exactly 4 of the Reaper I minis as they've appeared at my FLGS, which has saved me a fortune AND kept my unfinished-project guilt in check. Thanks for the BD greetings, gang!

Indeed, another belated birthday greeting! And what timing for the delivery! Enjoyed the video, especially the final segment with the figures and paper scenery (hey, I've made up some of those pieces too!), but equally fascinating to see what the new Dwarven Forge materials look (and sound) like. I bought up several of the original DF scenery packs more than a decade ago, as we were fortunate then in having a UK importer who'd just set up shop here. Simply couldn't resist the caverns especially, particularly as everything came pre-painted (including small resin floor puddles in the caves)! The main differences I spotted viewing the video seem to be all my items have little bow-tie-shaped plastic connectors to fit between the tiles to hold everything together, and that all pieces in my sets came with baize underside basing, which makes them a little more slippery on a polished surface, but also means they don't scratch it. Certainly, I've found the sets I have both very robust and (providing you have a plan in advance) quick to assemble. I "rediscovered" DF this year, and visiting their website to see what they'd been up to in the intervening years, was fascinated to find what I'd missed, though they seem to have gone down the "collectors" route rather, with time-limited sets I'd already missed on the USA site (though some were still available through the UK-based European importer), and found at least one of the "Traps" sets I have could now be counted as such too, as it's no longer on sale. Looking over the Kickstarter though, I couldn't find much there I didn't already have (albeit sometimes in slight variant form) thanks to the basic sets, so it never really tempted me. Good to know it's every bit as impressive as those I have, perhaps even more so without the bow-tie connectors in fact. Not sure how robust that carry-bag will be longer term though; DF scenery isn't at all lightweight! Now I've got to decide on Bones II, do I stay in @ Wave 4, or do I skip it and spend the money on paper minis? I'd think that could depend on how much time you have for cleaning, painting and basing 3D minis. From comments across the CWF, it's clear a lot of us have large quantities of once-tempting 3D cast minis we've never done anything with (guilty here too...), aside from the 3D hordes we have completed. The pre-coloured paper minis and scenery are a huge advantage for me certainly now, and when the cash has allowed in latter years, I've tended to go for pre-painted cast miniatures if I'm actually intending to try to use them.
