I needed hangman gallows for an upcoming game, so I looked at some wood textures online, and ended up using one from some minecraft blocks here and then slapped on an "inked adventures" double door as a trapdoor from here I figured out a rough shape for everything, and used the little wood pieces as supports. I glued the post directly to the base, and it's sturdy enough, but it wobbles a bit so I'll probably modify it a bit for more support if I make it again. I've modified it a couple times since I printed and built it, but it's pretty similar to the picture. The door is cut to open, and it holds the weight of a lego minifig with no problem. I didn't bother adding anything to the underside since no one's face will be that close to the table to figure out I was lazy, and I do my best to smoosh everything onto one page =)

Thanks! It's a neat little build, and will fit in nicely with the Imperfect Castle when it comes, and of course Inked Adventures now. I do wonder where the original floorboard texture came from tho... it's too bad the minecraft papercrafter didn't include the source.

Indeed yes, an attractive model.
Has anyone though found a papercraft rope texture, obviously with a noose, but also long and straight enough to kit out the full gallows? And maybe with some knots in it for tying up the loose end?
Then drifting off into reverie (harp music plus water-on-glass effects)...Or indeed a rope with a handgrip for use with church/temple bells? This led me on to thinking about a chain similarly (that is, a long straight stretch of chain links; obvious uses for drawbridges, tying up pet dragons, etc.).
I appreciate this can be done with other materials - string, for example - but I've been thinking a lot lately about trying to do more things with "pure" paper/card craft objects.

I was trying to print out a rope noose as well, but they all ended up pretty small and fiddly. I figured dental floss, or a paperclip would be a good stand in. I think the trick would be to have the rope/chain size exaggerated a bit, oversized. That way it's not too small work with, or too fragile. Printing a strip of rope texture, then folding(bending I guess) it into a small cylinder might look interesting, I'll give that a shot. I see a knotted rope here that looks pretty good to tile and print as is. I assume the ships from worldworks and fat dragon would have ropes and rigging included. I remember seeing a pic of the anchor from "maiden of the high seas" with a chain attached.

Yes, rope is _very_ fiddly to cut without a machine. I must confess, after printing and cutting 4 or so of Dryw's wagon drivers, for the 5 &/or 6th one(s) I just cut off the whip entirely, and will replace with wire or stiffened thread. The effect will be neater and more proportional, and I won't be bothered to be too much of a purist

I found another rope here that was pretty cartoony, so I pieced together some. I did the same with chain that I found on a stock site, but I lost the link. The rope looks doable, cutting by hand, but the smaller you get the more of a pain it would be. The chain would be something else, heh. I'll mess around with the rope and add some knots, as the gallows should probably have some kind of guardrail around it(safety first).

the gallows should probably have some kind of guardrail around it(safety first). I guess that is a joke without the winky face? I'm pretty sure a guardrail would be anachronistic as well as ironic. I suggest string of thick thread for the noose. So, this is what happens when you delete all that mumbo jumbo at the end of a quote

K, so I flipped and mirrored the rope, printed, folded, glued. As soon as I started cutting the small pieces I got annoyed, lol. IF, I were to need paper rope in the future, I'd print out an entire sheet, both sides, of a rope-like texture, and just cut it into strips. For now, I'll stick with floss, paperclips, thread, etc =) Safety third.

This is beyond my skill level but i think someone could take the smaller rope and lay it diagonally across the larger rope to create the noose then use a program that allows "Bending" of objects to make the rope come full circle. I don't have time to learn gimp again otherwise I would totally take up the challenge

I've done some kitbashing over in the WWG forums involving 'bending' some previously straight textures in order to make curved rail tracks. Here's a link to the little writeup I did (mostly so I could go back to it weeks later and recall what I did): www.worldworksgames.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=12263I've seen some cool prototypes of a very (pardon the pun) flexible GIMP plugin that could smoothly and effectively bend textures like rope, but I don't think it's reality yet. I sure would love it. Anyway, I've gotten OK mileage out of understanding how the whole polar coordinates filter works.

Excellent Bortorama!
I found a chain among the pieces for WWG's "Hellworks II: Cathedrae Noctis", where there's a bloodied, naked male corpse hanging from one on an external buttresses. They've got round the "lack of thickness" problem by giving the whole chain a black background (so filling in the gaps between links) and border, much like a standard paper mini. Such a border would work with the rope too, I'm sure, and would make it much easier to cut, as a simple straight line. The WWG chain also has two curved pieces hanging from the buttress.
Hadn't thought about paper ship models for the ropes; must investigate further!

There are chains and ropes on the anchors and ratlines of The Maiden model by WWG. They're designed to be printed on transparencies.

Thanks for the heads-up on this one Mproteau. There don't seem to be individual ropes that I could spot on the website photos of The Maiden, which is what I was really after, just triangular sets of rigging lines to attach to the masts, but the anchor chain looks interesting, and there are some nice bits of furniture in the kit - plus the free kitbashes you get once you've purchased the main ship (bunk beds anyone?!). There are two Fat Dragon ships I spotted that have similar groups of triangular rigging lines for transparencies, but I couldn't see any anchor chains or other ropes on either, as far as the webpage images show anyway, the Medieval Sailing Ship (Cog) and The Sea Dragon. Haven't had time to check elsewhere as yet for other possibilities.

As far as rope goes, try printing that eyesore out, double sided. Cut the strips whatever size you need. You can see the edges of the rope, but it shouldn't really matter at that scale. I cut the individual ropes into halves/quarters and I can't really see anything other than strips of rope when I'm done. I followed the lines for thicker rope, like ship ties, and it looks fine as well. I still haven't found a way to cheat with the chains yet.
