Because I may have burnt out my laptop's hard-drive. Mr. Wacky says my MacBook isn't even reading it as existing, so either I fried it (living to close to the storage edge), or there's a loose connector somewhere (what I _really_ hope for). And since it's a flash drive, it's likely FUBAR'd. While we transferred a whole lot of files over to my desktop recently, and some of my stuff is in iCloud, I've not been able to back up regularly for awhile. My backup drive is tucked away somewhere-I-don't-know-where since we had a ice-dam cause our ceiling to leak over my storage area (including paper stuff like mementos, papercraft, financial records). Fortunately we caught that before much was irretrievably damaged or lost, but our house is rather turned upside down with boxes here and there out of the way of the hotzone. I'm on my husband's laptop at the moment, but that goes back with him to work. This may force me into getting my desktop running properly and using it for a while, though it's in the coldest room in the house, with an antique chair that'd be more comfortable used as firewood. Either way, I won't have the flexibility or comfort to visit and chat as much. #badluck #firstworldproblems

I'm solution oriented: Thick sweater, fingerless gloves, warm slippers and switch out the chair

Hot cocoa. It warms the hands and the insides...and good luck. My wife gave me a Samsung Galaxy Note tablet (the one with the pen) that came loaded with Photo Shop Touch. Would smething like that be a less expensive option?
Side note: I so misspelled "hands" up there that auto-correct suggested "Idahoans." Sigh.

glennwilliams: you spell like I do. WackyAnne: We had a computer in the cold corner of our house for a long time. Something I always wanted to try and never did was a hot water bottle to rest your wrists on. I think it would warm the blood going into your fingers.

See the Zombie Apocalypses in Texas is starting to look better isn't it!!
actually it was 81 yesterday and I for one am kind of mad about the heat so I suggest a cultural exchange you send some of your cold my way and I will send some of my heat your way and we will both be happy ... I can even send you a zombie slave to do your bidding just to sweeten the deal!! once you get passed the smell they are actually quite useful... I'm not helping again am I ?

Thanks for the warm thoughts, guys, I really appreciate it I'm not doing too badly. Hubby's working from home (on his desktop down in the basement - even less hospitable than the guest bedroom in my eyes - Man Cave! Aaargh!), and so I can borrow his laptop for an hour or two. As to money, fortunately, the repairs should be covered by the AppleCare plan. It's more the small measure of important documents that didn't get backed up recently that I will have to recreate or do without. Fortunately, I don't _think_ I lost much of family Christmas memories, as I'd not offload many photos off my phone, and I'm fairly certain that most of the important ones were downloaded onto the high capacity desktop. My Picnic Adventures and little graphics projects have been all but on hold since my grandmother died just before Halloween, so they would be safe and sound in the backup. Fortunately I can revisit RPGNow, and to a lesser extent Kev's Lounge and Paizo.com to re-download much of my papercraft and other hobby stuff. I will have to do some hunting for other papercraft gems I've scavenged online over the last month or two, including a whole slew of freebies from MicroTactix and others that I sometimes had to use the Internet Archive to recover. Le sigh. And all's not lost yet. Anthony's yet to take the machine up to the Apple-affiliate store to have them take a further look at it. Fingers crossed, seems to selfish for prayers...

I'm myself dealing with an hard drive failure, but in sunny Brazil I don't have to deal with the same drawbacks as you have (Can I have first world problems in Brazil?). Yet, I understand, it's an annoyance!
Right now I'm copying all the stuff on my external HD that the Gnome Disk Utility assures me, in a nice big red letters, is in danger of IMMINENT FAILURE.
My shared feelings to you.

Oh dear. My sympathies--I hope you get that sorted to your satisfaction soon. You too, Hackbarth, HDD failures just plain suck.
I have 2 external backup drives because I don't trust the hard drives inside any of my computers and I'm always worrying that they'll crap out on me. I also don't trust the backup drives and am always worrying that they'll crap out on me, so I briefly considered getting backup drives for my backup drives, but then sweet reason tapped me on the shoulder and went "Dude, stop."

Don't feel bad, my friend down the road is a software developer and has an array of 8 externals. He's quite pleased with it.

8 externals? Nice! I'm looking at having to get an UPS for The Monolith and might as well look into some kind of NAS or RAID array for peace of mind.
