Alrighty, here are some views of my new model kit. These images are "3D mockups" based on actual photos of the white paper test model, although they might look like 3D models. (This paper model has never seen the inside of a 3D modeling program. I did it all in 2D in Photoshop, including these images.) You can probably see how this will make a perfectly serviceable fantasy/medieval model by leaving off some of the gribblies. The "T"-looking objects will be pipes/conduits leading up from the ground into some machinery (fans, piping, gears, whatnot). There's a stack of cordwood, and an automatic bellows, and two chimneys because steampunk. I'm guessing this is some sort of workshop. Anybody want to name this thing? I'm okay with "Steampunk Workshop No. 1" but maybe there's something better. If this design doesn't seem steampunk enough, that's all right. I'm easing into this sort of thing.

Well, if it's steampunk, you just glue some gears on it, right? I always get a kick out of that video... How about the Brassworks?

The Arcanists? The Artificer's Shop?

"The Artificer's Shop" - I like it. If you made a version that was not human sized (like your halfling house) with even more outlandish and impractical doo-dads attached to it, it could be billed as a gnome's workshop!

Yeah, there's definitely a type of steampunk that is nothing more than silly visuals without any logic behind them, and I'm trying to avoid that. There will be some exposed gearwork on this kit, but I think it'll make some sense. Artificer's Shop sounds pretty good... maybe for the next one. That has a grand sound to it.

Texturing in progress on the Steampunk House #1, which is what I've decided to call this. I figure the name will stick out and let folks know that this the start of a new line. I'll use funky names later.

Stone textures are done for the Steampunk House #1. A few other textures are in place but not finalized. I have a cool idea for metal half-timbering, but I'm going to finish the fantasy/medieval texture options fire before moving onto the steampunk stuff.

This afternoon I worked on the fantasy/medieval roofs (2 colors of wood shingles, and moss which takes *forever*, not shown) plus these new windows (shown here). This all looks a little flat to me, but things will stand out more when I get to final shading. I'll probably create a new door design next, and then I'll move on to the half-timbered stuff.

I like the look of the windows, it's not like anything I've seen before. Sassy & brassy

Half-timbers are in place, and I'll be working on the stucco next. That'll just about wrap up the medieval wall textures.

I've added an optional hanging sign to this kit, which should make it even more versatile.
In working on this model, I've decided to make the most of it by releasing it in four separate versions.
There'll be a multi-layered medieval/fantasy version, but I'm not sure what to name it yet. (Suggestions welcome!)
There'll be a multi-layered steampunk version called the Artificer's Workshop. The hanging sign will include a "crossed hammers" design.
There'll be a ready-to-print version called the Artificer of Rake's Corner, which will be one-look-only (that's what I mean by "ready to print") and available at a reduced price. It will include a skin or coloration not available on the other kits.
And there'll be a PSD Photoshop kitbash version of the Artificer of Rake's Corner, which will include some bonus Photoshop layers from both the medieval/fantasy and steampunk versions. (I don't want to share *all* of my best stuff, but I certainly do want to make sure folks get access to a lot of cool stuff with these PSD packs.)
This four-release approach is really letting me do everything I want with the texture options, since I'm no longer limited to a ~$5 price point (which puts a ticking clock in my head) and practical restrictions on PDF file sizes. Every skin I want to create will be featured in one kit or another. I don't expect anyone to buy all four kits, and I'm certainly not trying to milk anyone -- I'm trying to free myself up from the restrictions that have prevented me from expressing a greater variety of looks in the past.

Tinkerer's Workshop?
So from the name, the Rake's Corner version would be steam-punky?

Tinkerer's Workshop? So from the name, the Rake's Corner version would be steam-punky? No, so I'll probably use another name for the Rake's Corner version. Tinkerer's Workshop sounds good!

"The Tinkerer's Workshop of Rake's Corner" I need to get my act together and, like oldschooldm, make some interiors for your buildings - that's what I really want... Do you have some PSDs for sale that have building interiors enough to kitbash interiors for your buildings? I own all of your fantasy buildings, maps and ground tiles, but I haven't picked up any PSDs. My goal this year was to make my own props for sale, but work is getting in the way. It looks like I am going to have to continue to leave it up to the pros for a while longer. I have slowed my WWG kitbashing to a crawl, and will be actively looking for another vender to start kitbashing... I'd have fun coming up with NPCs to go with the shops, and make some backstories or adventure hooks for them.

My opinion is that the model ... or better, the house shape, is great as usual for fantasy, but not so much for steampunk. The reason for this assertion is totally non-rational, subjective and, in the end, totally personal: the heavy sloped roof push in my mind the idea of fantasy (being my idea of fantasy most celtic/nordic oriented) while for steampunk stuffs i envision more square houses, with two full foors and a much more flat roof. Just to say my impression. About steampunk decoration, perhaps a "half tank" (a semi-cylinder popping out from the wall) could help in breaking the "tubes"

I'm rather partial to this image from Girl Genius; The mechanical innovations are an add-on to existing architecture instead of tearing everything down and rebuilding to suit the new mechanics.

I think of Steampunk being an alternate to Victorian, so pointy roofs, etc. definitely fit my vision of the setting

Having pipes venting to the outside is a nice touch. I always think of metal roofs, hoppers and water tanks, and for some reason towers with balconies.

Ah, now I have proof that there are many different kinds of "steampunk"! Do not worry, Parduz, this model may not fit your vision of steampunk but it is my first attempt. If I decide I enjoy making steampunk stuff, there will be other models that are designed to be more "of their own steampunk world" and not trying to work as both fantasy and steampunk. I am starting out with something that is familiar to me, and the models will become more specifically steampunk as I get comfortable with this kind of thing.
A lot of Warmachine players are used to pointy roofs for their steampunk terrain. Warmachine terrain is very much Victorian/Renaissance looking, just adding metal roofs and metal elements where wood would normally be. I don't know if anyone still plays Malifaux, but it is similar to that (Victorian steampunk). But there is also Martian/space rockets steampunk, and alternate World War I steampunk, and flying battleships steampunk... I have to find the style that I like best, and I think it is the Victorian/Renaissance steampunk style that appeals to me the most.

Glad you got what i meant. About me, i just can't get "hooked" by steampunk/weird/chtulu themes, so don't waste time trying to satisfy me (well, that's unfair... you're the only one that made me play a solo game, after all...) I'll sit here patiently waiting for a classical old-west town and some more low complexity sci-fi stuffs

Dunno if you have one planned on it or not Dave, but it really needs a large, double door in it, so it looks like a steam tank or large automaton could at least be manufactured in it.

About me, i just can't get "hooked" by steampunk/weird/chtulu themes, so don't waste time trying to satisfy me (well, that's unfair... you're the only one that made me play a solo game, after all...) Technically a steampunk revolution could have happened anytime in the last 2000 years (thanks, at least in part, to my Hero, who also invented the vending machine). "Traditionally" Steampunk refers to an alternate techonology stream originating in the early industrial era, i.e. Victorian-era. Regionally, it centres around Northern Europe (esp. Britain) and North America. Now, Steampunk influence has been cast back into Medieval and early Renaissance settings as well (again, works with Dave's stuff, and fantasy interpretations) and into the early years of the last century... Dave's architectural style, including the peaked roofs, are very appropriate. Even early large industrial structures had curved or peaked roofs; check out the Paris train stations d'Orsay (now a museum) and Gare St. Lazare (as Monet saw it) The catalyst for the genre, William Gibson & Bruce Sterling's The Difference Engine is set in mid-19th Century London, and while I really enjoyed that book (my God, has it really been 20 years???!), I've not really followed the genre, certainly not in its explosion... I'll sit here patiently waiting for a classical old-west town and some more low complexity sci-fi stuffs Hmmm... sounds like you are craving some Firefly! I have an alternate suggestion for you, with a similar vibe, but I'll save that for another time & thread. Time for me to go...
