The theme for this months HOARD is Garden of Doom! This can be any sort of miniature on the above theme or feel free to submit miniatures off theme. If you submit a figure, they must include both front and rear art, have a proper trimming outline, and include instructions for multi-part models. Recolors and figure mods are encouraged, and even uncolored designs are welcome. No nudity or sexuality, but bloody gory and horrifying is encouraged. If you have questions about how to design your figures, like formats, resolution, and stuff like that, see the HOARD GUIDELINES in this forum category. Entries for the Hoard will be accepted until the last day of March, 2014. That's right, bring on the cannibal gnomes! The Mimic garden bench, the evil fairies, living statues, hangman trees, bloodgrass, enchanted fountains, and creepy gardeners!

I know it is too late for the hoard, but I'll post it here anyway, since this is where it was requested. It is not a great likeness, but I think if he stands beside his spaceship/car people will accept him as Centauri I should say he is a mod/recolour of Jackmatt's thug preview from the batman thread. Edit: Since I had some time I decided to improve the likeness a bit. I widened the lapels, added the puff and vest and generally improved the back. Enjoy centauri by cowboyleland, on Flickr

Moved here from Cinema heroes & Villains, too late for that. Perhaps he's taking refuge in the Garden of Doom to escape the Bounty Hunter?

It's a great likeness Cowboyland. I knew exactly who it was at first glance.
Hmmmm......now that you mention it, his car would be a relatively simple 3D project......

GM64 This post is a little all over the place so I apologize... I know I have seen a 3D starcar linked somewhere around here (probably by Cowboyleland), but for the life of me I cant find it right now... I thought it would be in last months Hoard. Cowboyleland, any reason you didn't repost it there? (as in it was by someone else or not for general release or something?) On other notes I am working on a Venus mantrap (because that is all I could think of for deadly flora for starters ). I think I will finish it before too long so I was hoping for some more ideas for deadly plants or garden accouterments. Suggest away. And on the subject of suggestions, Dungeonmistress, I like those suggestions and will let them simmer for a while. However, in that same post you say you couldn't do this stuff. There is no way that you aren't qualified to put your stuff up here. What you have shown (in say the Aelor's emporium post) is great quality and shows all the necessary skill to make good figures! I am not one of the heavy hitters of this forum by any means (and I wont name names for fear of leaving one of the many great artists here off), but I found that the biggest hurdle to doing it was posting that first figure. The same great artists I just mentioned they have been amazingly supportive and helpful and have made me feel welcome. That said, I hope you draw something and scan it in (uncolored is good too there are several people here who do great recolors all the time). Not good with photoshop/GIMP? Draw a big figure by hand, color it with pencils or markers; I or another forum member can resize it and/or give good links to free versions of those programs. Don't have a scanner? Take a good picture. Even an unfinished piece can serve as a starting point or inspiration for someone else. Contributing to the Hoard is very rewarding in my opinion and I strongly suggest it. This is a great community and every post/pic is appreciated.

Thank you so much for those encouraging words, Zygrott24, that was very kind. I have been thinking about trying my hand but...(swallows nervously)...OK! You've talked me into it! I'll try something. But where should I post it? In the gallery?
BTW: I just posted new pictures of the improvements I made to Aelor's, if you are interested.

Like your Venus Mantrap. Looking forward to see how you develop it, you know, like dripping blood, fangs instead of thorns, etc.

Glad to hear it! I always post my work-in-progress here, it keeps the progress of my ideas together and saves me from making a thread for each design or submission theme. For me it is nice to have an end in sight (at the end of the month when the gates close) to help focus my project goals and get me motivated. And of course no work will ever be locked out of a hoard. If it is late, it goes to next month! It also seems like the folks who come to the Hoard forum before it is finalized are talkative and interested. Of course, a "gallery" or "new member artists" post will probably both get a lot of views too, forum goers here seem to range around pretty widely. I would say go with your gut on whichever feels like the best fit.

Well, the only thing I have at the moment is not strictly my own work. It is a drawing based on a creature out of the 3.5 MM. I am planning on using it as a creature in my game, so I drew my rendition of it and then did the back. Now I have to outline and highlight it, then cut it out and mount it. I might put it in the Aelor's thread just to see if anyone can identify it, just for fun.
Have you ever seen Pink Floyd's "The Wall"? If you have, do you remember the, um, amorous flowers (tulips)? I've been thinking of something like that, only more deadly, rather than, well, you know. What do you think?

Someone has to do a doom-laden variant of a garden gnome at some point.... Even if only to fight off the goblin gardeners which have been mooted on another thread... ;O)

@dungeonmisstress: most of the creatures in the D&D3.5MM are part of the OGL (illithid, , beholder and (I think) displacer beast & carrion crawler being the notable exceptions) , so unless you have actually traced/scanned a picture, doing your own rendition and creating a back is a totally legitimate hoard contribution. "Real" artists use other artists for reference and inspiration all the time.

I just want to be sure I'm not stepping on anyone's toes. And I just wanted to use him (it?) for my own game. But if you think it's permissible, then I'll take some photos and share him here. Or should I send it to Squirmydad first? I do not have a base for him as I drew the front and back on separate pieces of paper. I finished outlining him last night and this morning I brushed on a coat of Aileen's Clear Tacky glue to protect him from smudging.
I'd really be interested in your opinions. Also, I'd like to figure out a different pose for him (I used the same pose as in the book) and couldn't think of a better one.

Post what you can: photo's, scans, whatever. Call it a work in progress. We'll all give you too many opinions, you'll take what you like and someone will know what to do next.

I have a few ideas brewing and Game day is on Sunday. So I'm rushing, trying to get everything ready. Working on the floor plan for Aelor's Magic Emporium, right now and I need ideas for how to represent piles of books and boxes scattered about and ladders, too. Aelor's is here, If you want to see it. cardboard-warriors.proboards.com/thread/5708

You can make miniature books out of construction paper or Bristol board folded around one side of a thick light core. The "cover" should overhang the core on three sides, but it depends on how much detail you want to get into. You could wrap one edge of white foamcore, cut out the strip and then cut "books" off the strip. Do this with several colours and then mix up sizes and colours in your stacks of books.
If you have thicker Styrofoam, or you layer up corrugated cardboard, it is easier to wrap a solid "crate" than fold up a hollow one.

Hadn't thought of that. I do have Foamcor, as well as card board and poster board and empty cereal boxes. great idea! Thank you, Cowboyleland.

I looked at the submission guidelines but I wasn't clear on this.. is there a limit to the submissions? If they aren't used that's fine by me, and I certainly could use some criticism on these as well. This is a two part, meant to be slit down the middle and merged to give a full range of reach.. not sure how to present that. The Hydravora..

I think if you put a black line coming half way up from the base on one and a black line coming half way down from the flower on the other, people will get the idea.
They look cool, btw

Post by migibb on Mar 6, 2014 1:17:53 GMT -9
Only other thing that might be useful Mike is if you put a red "score-here" line across the middle of the base so people knew where exactly to fold to get the two halves to match up.....
But like cowboyleland said, they look cool!! Esepcially the hydravora..... (Must go write that one up as a monster....)

I'm thinking this Hoard would be the ideal time for someone to do a mini of Pigsy from the super-fab-classic Monket TV series.... After all he did have a rake..... Not my artwork, it comes from www.combey.com/monkey/monkey_gallery.htm
