Good point, CBL. I was already thinking that same thing. I used a more "papery" texture on a few of the more recent sets, but it looked like ... :/ Thanks, Nemo. I have to be careful what I do with the numbers. I *may* go back to having the icons on the side, because they are very important to the game, and I can make them larger, and easier to read.

I think the icons are fine where they are - though a larger/bolder font might be good - just reduce the font size of the copyright and artist name and 'stretch' the parchment texture out to fill the entire length of the card....

I can do that. There is one issue with the smaller icons. I don't want to give too much away, but I am going to need to have them able to be seen easily... especially once I color them... I want the orange and the yellow to be clearly seen...
WAIT?!
There isn't an ability that uses "ORANGE!"
Sorry, KHYBER THE BLACK jumped in and tried to spoil my surprises! (I would have posted a picture of him so it made more sense, but I am not going to dig for an image of him to post here... you get the idea).
With that said, I will need to make sure red, yellow and orange are not mistaken for one another. It is rough when someone doesn't know if the guy can climb walls or fix broken vehicles....

Here is the updated cards. Thanks for all of the input. I tried changing the background, but the more I played with it, the less I liked it. By adjusting the color, brightness, and contrast, it only made the other elements stand out more, and made them look out of place. I am happy with this. The Lightning Bolt isn't very forgiving when it comes to showing the numbers, but it works.

Have to admit, I think it loses something by having the icons uncoloured... Makes it look unfinished.

How about coloured outlines around the icons instead of the black ones that are there now? They could be a few pixels thicker as well.

They are unfinished. They will be colored on the actual cards

I will try to post a couple examples this weekend of actual cards that were previously released with what they might look like in this format. Time has been scarce since accepting the promotion at work, but I still am trying to get this rolling.

Quick note. I have been taking a course for work, and that with my new promotion has taken up all of my time. Even my Deadly Missions time with my kids.
We'll I completed my course and passed the pre-test. I just need to pass the final Friday. After that , I can resume GMG projects again. Thanks for your patience.

That is a game I was working on when my computer crashed ( literally to the ground), so I lost all of my work.
It is a game that features 50' (15 meter-ish) robots that fight in a futuristic setting. It was part BattleTech (or Pacific Rim... Robotech... You get the idea) and part collectable card game.
I would like to think I will finish it once I get a new computer and finish up the current projects looming overhead.
I will try to post some examples of the new cards for DM with colors an brief descriptions later today. Stay tuned for more information.

Hello All! Brushing some dust off the CW page. We are gearing up for the Second Edition of DEADLY MISSIONS. Once we get this underway, we can get some new sets and genres into circulation. Here is an example of how APHINNEON looked in DM13, and how he would look in 2ndEd. Any thoughts, feelings or concerns? Let us know. We have a LOT of projects in the works, but first, we need to make sure that things are in place. Once we adopt this format, we can let the Icons track abilities and such, and with the use of reference cards, we can eliminate the text boxes on the cards. This will allow the game to be played in other languages such as Italian, French and German. Please let us know your thoughts. I want to make sure everything is addressed before the new sets come out. As far as the artist's name goes, there are going to be various artist on the new sets, and I want to make sure they get the proper recognition for their work. You may notice that the "new" APHINNEON has a better close-combat attack. The stats are going to be a little better, and there are going to be significantly more powerful creatures in the game. In the case of some heroes (like SKAAR) they could have up to three abilities and such. The 2ndEd creatures and heroes can have up to SIX. I have to make sure that I assign the proper "cost" for the abilities and keep them in check. I don't want ultra-powerful characters bullying their way through the game (unless they are Legendary Characters, in that case it is expected). Ok... start posting so we can get these projects underway. I look forward to hearing your thoughts.

My 2c about the new layout: - the "flash" ("bolt"?) symbol bugs me.... his shape really does make writing a number in it hard... it seems misaligned, but it's the icon shape that give this impression. - Since you dropped the "translucent/glossy" style for the icons, i think that also the yellow disk should follow that path. - Not sure that the horizontal alignement of the icons is the best choice.... perhaps having the vertically aligned (as in the old version) will give you a bit more room for the figure... which usually have height>width - I'd put more emphasis on the character name (stronger font, or a bit of shadow... just to make it "pop-out"

As usual , you are spot-on, Parduz! I actually miss the plastic feel of the old icons. I may have to switch back to them. By making the icons vertical it makes the cards more uniform to the originals. The cards will appear the same only without the text box. The lightning bolt can be replaced easily enough. That was a hard icon to work with from the outset. Perhaps an arrow would work better and make it easier to read. Anyone else?

I may have to switch back to them. ùmh... i always felt that it clashes against the ...rugged? grungy? style of everything else on the card. I'd say that, if you're keeping using hand-drawn figure, you could get a better result by drawing the icons by hands. That's just a matter of tastes, anyway

(cricket, cricket...) It has been a while since I posted anything on here. I had a little time today, so I thought I would blow the dust off my art supplies. You know a little about LADY FAITH, and have seen her latest pictures. She is not only going to be featured in an upcoming set, but she is also bringing her two sisters, HOPE and CHARITY with her. Hope is a Technomancer, and Charity is a Necromancer. Here is the first version of LADY HOPE.

Well, I have officially drawn more today than I have in the last month! Here is the first draft of LADY CHARITY, the Necromancer.

(cricket, cricket...) Good job. But his left foot looks like it is without his high heel. Very strong! She's bending the weapon pole (the hands have an opposite perspective ). Also, the lower part of the legs seems a bit thin and short "compared" to the thights.

I am happy with them so far. I have been very busy at work, so time to draw is rare.

Took some time today to work on the figures for the for the new set. Here is LADY FAITH (hand-drawn this time, and not rendered) ...her sister, HOPE, a Technomancer... ...and CHARITY, a Necromancer...

Is it charitable to raise the dead? I think it'd be more optimistic

Have to admit, I've wondered about that myself, WackyAnne. Lol! Those look great really great, kiladecus. I think hand drawing them gives them more life and personality.

Well, as kiladecus should know by now, hand-drawn figures in general (and his, among others, in particular) are my favourites to use. Partly for artistic considerations, but I also find they have more personality, and work better at table distance. CG renders make for generally good looking figures on screen, but printing them off they end up muddied looking usually, and the detail rendered is often detrimental at table length. It's like the theatre vs. the screen. Actors for the theatre apply their makeup, and do their physical acting, in a much different style, with exageration and emphasis so that their face and emotions can carry the distance. Actors for the screen can look all but normal since the camera is close up to capture the detail and subtleties. Back to these figures specifically, I like very much how they've turned out (and the fuchsia hair!). You've come a long way since the lich, kil, although he remains one of my top 5 or 10 figures...

Aw shucks. One of my personal favorites is still ANGUS THE BLACK. I have had a couple good ones, but he is still among my favorites. Believe it or not, doing the renders helped me improve my drawing. The more I worked with figures that were correctly proportioned, the better my work has become. I still have a LONG way to go, but Parduz has had less comments to direct me lately. (Although I still have people "bending" their staves.

Yes I much prefer hand drawn figures too. Digital CGI figures always look like something dead propped up with sticks.

There is CGI, then there is CGI. Most are disappointing, but Rhannon could write a thesis on the ones worth having. Check out madmanmike to see what CGI can look like if time is spent on lighting and contrast.

So, you don't like my renders? My figures were ok, but they were better as images in the books than figures... I openly admit that. The renders on Bug Hunt are some of the best ones I have done. That wrecked shuttle and the figures walking into the station is my favorite. Once I get on top of things again, I will do CG fluff pics in the rule books and hand-drawn figures. I have proven on several occasions that I can do good character renders of my hand-drawn work. I was also thinking the other day, I am pretty sure that I am one of the few artists out there that still color my figures by hand, and not using PhotoShop. I am not saying that isn't a good way to do it, quite the opposite really... I just am old-school that way, and as long as the results look amazing, it doesn't matter what technique you use to achieve them.

I am struggling to learn to use GIMP and Paint and whatever else on the computer, but I draw 99.99% of everything by hand. I like the results better as well.
I think you do great work and should continue in the manner that best suits you.
