The theme for this months HOARD is Beasts! This can be any sort of miniature on the above theme or feel free to submit miniatures off theme. If you submit a figure, they must include both front and rear art, have a proper trimming outline, and include instructions for multi-part models. Recolors and figure mods are encouraged, and even uncolored designs are welcome. No nudity or sexuality, but bloody gory and horrifying is encouraged. If you have questions about how to design your figures, like formats, resolution, and stuff like that, see the HOARD GUIDELINES in this forum category. Entries for the Hoard will be accepted until the last day of June, 2014. From the depths of space, the ocean deeps, or uncharted caverns in the bowels of the world come the beasts of legend. Flying, crawling, shambling, or slithering they come with their terrible fangs, deadly claws, grasping tentacles and terrifying gaze to destroy all civilizations. Beasts.

This might be the one to get me sketching in one of my nasty homebrew critters from my game: grendel-bees.

Hmm... would something like this one count as a BEAST? Desert (or Sand?) Bug BTW Fantasy (or Sci-Fi) bugs can be huge ones! Then other/additional ground can be changed or added: rock or grass and even water, so it can be Rocky or Water Bug as well

I only just now realized Mesper is an anagram for Permes. What does your name mean? Ryan

P.S. I only just now realized Mesper is an anagram for Permes. What does your name mean? Well in origin - just a simple acronym tossed from my first/second/Christian/last name, then one "e" is added to make it easier to pronounce Ad. pronounce: the P is for Przemysław, which alone might be kinda challenge for English speaking ppls - so please spare your tongue and don't even try Then suddenly I was enlighten that received name Permes is also used for blue eyed siamese cats Well, cats are both funny/cool and sort of mysterious creatures (vide cat's worship in Ancient Egypt), so I stay with this name... That's all.

ROTFL. So, I type "Przemysław" into google translate to see how well it pronounces it. On the left side, it just said "aaff". On the right side, it said "Purr-zuh-mez-law". I found this site: www.forvo.com/word/przemys%C5%82aw/It sounds like "Premiswav". Is that close? I like the challenge of at least trying to acclimate myself with the patterns in other languages. It's the least I can do given how many people around the world have to struggle with my lousy language!

PERFECT!Both male and female (kinda more accurate) version /these speakers are IMO native Polish speakers/ BTW: Przemysław is derived from Przemysł: Polish XIII C. King Przemysław II: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Przemysł_IIIn fact Przemysław is stricte Slavic name - so 1500+ years of even more - and it means "smart man with brains and wisdom" -- which in nowadays circumstances is barely about me, I'm F*%ng afraid;) There is also Czech (our southern neighbours) version - sounds similar but with "R" letter more accented. Funny thing is that Russians, which are also Slavic, can't pronounce this name properly (and it's immediately recognizable that speaker is from Russia)... Well, in fact Przemysław is a "full" first name - everyday / shortened version Przemek ('Pshaemeck') or Przemko 'Pshaemco' is used (there are other short or even shorter versions but these are used by (reserved for) mothers and girlfriends, so I'll skip these versions:) But I'm hijacking the main thread - so sorry for OT

Here is my contribution for the monthly hoard: the Catoblepas Directly based in the Catoblepas depiction by Jan Jonston: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Catoblepas.jpgEDIT: added source information in the miniature tab.

Looks great gilius. A good example of how sometimes in profile a mirrored "back" is all you need. Just the right amount of shading, it even reads in the thumbnail without looking overdone full size (which is actually over sized compared to the printed fig)Nice work!

Haha, thanks for satisfying my curiosity! I'm afraid I'm one of those clueless English speakers that has a lot of trouble pronouncing Polish words and names, which is funny because my grandparents were actually from Poland. I guess it's not something you can inherit though. Anyway... awesome wurm! Ryan

I haven't actually gotten around to drawing just yet but in looking around for inspiration I saw some great creative commons stuff (particularly from www.36peas.com - www.flickr.com/photos/goosemouse/sets/72157624410426985/ ). There is some great stuff there, including the requested manticore, and the licence is very clear (CC- attribution). If you are like me you may get some inspiration, or maybe the frontside of a figure of yours (if that's kosher for the horde).

Oh, thanks for the link zygrott24 - lots to play with in there!!! My manticore comment earlier was really aimed at okumarts though. David showed off a manticore he did for his home game some months ago and I have used every opportunity I can to 'encourage' him to publish it. I think he has it pencilled in for his new line of mini-sets.

A fascinating and very useful hijack - I always wondered, but was afraid to ask. I speak three languages, but Polish is such a far cry from English/French/Spanish that I'd never dared guess at its pronunciation. I'll have to practice it, now

When you first told me your name, mesper, I did that same thing as @brave Adventurers did. I think I even used the pronounciator. I like your name and once I heard it, it wasn't hard to say at all.

He is a little dark. Maybe half a shade lighter, without loosing his fearsome dark creepiness?

Looking at him a little closer, now that the phone image viewer is displaying him larger than a literal thumbnail, it looks better. But if there is a way to separate the underlying texture (is it the OM dirt?) to lighten it and create more contrast with the overlying black line detailing, that would've better. I'll see if I can print him off tonight, as well as a lighter version or two...

Much better squirmydad - the contrast really makes him pop now, but his "face" is still shadowed and mysterious.....
