On the 22nd of June, the nursing home in Cole Camp, Missouri asked me if I could do some of the paper animals for the display case in the activity room. I had previously done a Christmas village for it, and they really liked my models that I gave my grandma when she was a resident. As luck would have it, I had just sent a care package of them to a friend in California that works in hospice and she wanted to leave them with some of her patients. So for the next two weeks, I did enough Canon animals and a few others and this is the result. The last photo is the mid-point photo, trying to figure out how many more I needed to do

Nice. Next time you're there, wave at the little motel at Cole Camp Junction. It was built by my grandparents and originally named Har-Le-Mar after their 3 kids, Harold, LeRoy (my dad), and Mary. The farm behind it was my grandfather's.

Paper Trains is going to be the topic of the September/October display. It has been a lot of fun so far. At this point I have only done the super simple ones for the bottom shelf, but it isn't like I only have two weeks to get things done, so a much more relaxing task this time
I was actually shocked that it was selected as photo of the week. I just hope that it inspired a few others to help brighten the days of folks in hospice and nursing homes.

There are a bunch of them, but they are very simple. The most difficult part was figuring which tabs were in the wrong places. Also on the mine cars, there is a 'to scale' diagram on how the interior is supposed to fit. If anyone else does these, you can cut out the diagram and use it as a 'former' run down the center under the seats.
An interesting aside on this project is that all of the trains are real trains, including the little mine locomotive.
Top shelf will have the Adler, Genoa, JK Bowker, Little Joe, Porter Mogul, Reno and Virginia locomotives.
If someone were doing an Old West setting, these trains would look good, but would need to be enlarged. I did them at 73%. 100% would be a little small. Fit to screen on 11X17 paper would be about right.

Cool railway models I come from a railway family so I've got a big soft spot for steam locos.

Cool railway models I come from a railway family so I've got a big soft spot for steam locos. I just hope I don't screw up the nicer models. So, it is time for a break before I do the other trains. Tomorrow night I should have Aaron's buggy done and should have a start on Jesse Smith's Mustang GT 500. After that I want to work on my diorama for Paper Cuts 2014.

These trains are taking too long. I don't see how I'm going to be done by next weekend. Finished the Adler this week and the Virginia today

My week is not going the best for this project. I originally thought to swap out displays on the 13th of September, but then it looked like I might finish this week, but that isn't going to happen.
If you haven't looked at the Kaukapedia trains, you should check them out. I think that between this year's display and putting them out again next year I might go back through and modify these into 'models' instead of 'papercraft'. With the open cabs, there ought to be some sort of interior in them ... even if it is highly simplified.

Still have the Porter to add to the top shelf, Lil Joe isn't going to be put in there. I was afraid that it would look empty on the top shelf and crowded on the bottom. I was wrong. The nursing home residents were excited

Finding some panoramic images for the background might also be a nice touch. It's amazing that you were able to get so many pieces done! I'm lucky to make one simple building in a month. Nice work.

That mirrored background in the case is definitely an issue. I was looking for images already to have printed up at the print shop or do as four pages taped together.
It wasn't so much of an issue on the other displays, but it is very much an issue on this one. When I take them the Porter next time I am down there, I'm going to lower the top shelf a notch or two, also.
If anyone decides to do the Kaukapedia trains, I would recommend importing to Gimp and exporting to pdf. The scan downloads are not at the same file size, so printing them 'straight' has created some scaling issues.

Ray's got a new toy at Ravensblight. I'm sure glad this didn't distract me while I was doing the NH display

WOW!!!! Both the trains and the animals are stunning. I had to zoom in on the animals to accept they were papercraft

My goal is to have a number of displays to swap out during the year, putting it onto a schedule of sorts. As I do more models or feel inclined to make a different display to throw into the mix, I'll just alter the schedule a bit. I will eventually do a display of North American animals and fish to go in there. But so far, I've got Cute Animals, Paper Trains, Christmas Village and Nativity Scenes. I probably won't get around to it this year, but I plan to eventually have a Lincoln sites display for Jan/Feb and I'm getting started right now on Churches and Easter scenes. Also starting to work on some antique cars for another.
I should be able to rotate things around and keep it interesting, without it looking like the same displays.
