wow and I complain about Adak?? LOL you must have had a love hate relationship with those islands? I just hate them LOL The islands are where I learned to make my own toys. Every 6 months when the food barge would come I would use the empty cardboard boxes left over to make castles and tanks.

And boats?

And boats? YEAH BOATS! It was an island after all. The big boxes from the evaporated milk made excellent sailing vessels.

On the islands EVERYTHING was turned into a toy boat: fishing net corks, pop cans, styrofoam, blocks of wood, bottles, etc. They were functional boats, we put bolts for ballast under them if needed, and they often had functional masts and rigging. The art on the walls at the school was boats, boats and more boats with a few planes thrown in for good measure. We made many types of paper airplanes that we would throw around the one room school during recess if we were allowed to stay inside when the storms were too bad.

ok lets talk polar bears for a minute here , didn't you grow up with the nagging perpetual fear that they would snatch you away and drag you down to their kingdom in the underworld!! I mean , um ... weren't you afraid they would get you? ya don't ask it's a long story LOL but seriously they were everywhere, just waiting!

THE most vivid memory I have of a nightmare from my childhood is a polar bear menacing me in my bed at the cottage. I woke up screaming and went to my parents bed and then I "saw" him again out their window. And I didn't even live in polar bear territory.

When I've done fishing trips up there, brown bears were the biggest problem, but that was on the islands near Ketchikan, way down south in the balmy Alaska panhandle. What is the difference between brown bears and grizzlies? I just don't know enough about bears evidently

Grizzlies are much bigger. Also they have a large shoulder hump, but if you are that close to a grizzly you should really be backing slowly away.

if your that close to a wild Grizzly then your pretty much a dead man walking. Backing away at that point is kind of a moot issue. you need to startle the bear some how, prey that it works and then RUN LIKE A BOSS!!

As a child I was more concerned about being bitten by a rabid ground squirrel than mauled by a bear.

Happy belated Birthday, Squirmydad! Many Happy Returns. Here are sincere hopes that this finds you, and those you love, happy, healthy, and blessed on the anniversary of your birth and for the rest of the year to come. May any God or gods you worship watch over you in the year to come. If you worship none, do not be offended that I have asked at least one whom I venerate to watch over you.

Happy VERY belated Birthday, squirmydad! Sorry it took me this long to see this thread. I've been very busy with building terrain and things for my own game. I am trying to get as much done as I can before the winter because I may have a knee replacement surgery then and won't be much in the mood for such things. In any case, I hope that you had a splendid day and will have an even more splendid year!
