How do you feel about this year's showcase competition? I know it needs more advance marketing, that position is currently vacant... Were the prize amounts too small, too big, just right? Did the voting make sense? Not the results, the how-to part of it. Are there enough categories? Too many? Should it be held in a different month? Did the categories parameters make sense? Why didn't you enter a piece into one of the categories? What other questions have I forgotten to ask? All comments and criticism welcome. Tanks for participating.

Honestly, this year was just at a very wrong time for me. When I planned on working on my project idea, I had to do all those animals for the nursing home display. I feel a little guilty about it, but not that much. The nursing home thing had to be a priority.
Things that I've noticed with forum contests in general. Two-month window seems about right. Longer than that and no one does anything until the last month and a half anyway. Shorter than that and there is too much chance of 'something coming up'. Honestly, I actually like that you don't do extensions like so many contests do.
I think the categories make sense, even though there were some questions on the nuances.

I think this year's competition brought out some quality entries. It may seem crazy, but I feel I had too many votes. I feel like having to pick my one or two favourites would have made me think harder than just deciding which of the entries NOT to vote for, which is kind of what happens. Tanks for participating. Ok, Where's my tank? ;D

How do you feel about this year's showcase competition? Quite good, actually. Were the prize amounts too small, too big, just right? I already posted what my prize bought me at OBS, that was quite a bit - and I only got a 2nd place! I think the prize amounts were just right. Did the voting make sense? Not the results, the how-to part of it. Hm, I think that cowboyleland has a point. On the other hand, the fact that we had 3 votes each pretty much was what ensured, that everyone got a vote (or at least, that's my theory) - and I kind of like that. Wouldn't have been much fun for anyone being left with 0 votes, prize or not. Are there enough categories? Too many? Actually, I was missing one - tiles! A lot of people around here makes tiles of different kinds - 2D or 3D - and I believe we all use them. So maybe consider that as a category of it's own next year? Should it be held in a different month? I think you'll find as many different opinions about that as there are months. Did the categories parameters make sense? More or less, yeah, to me they did. Why didn't you enter a piece into one of the categories? I did... didn't I? What other questions have I forgotten to ask? I can't remember. Tanks for participating. And panzer to you too, for holding it!

How do you feel about this year's showcase competition? It was the best year ever. Just right! It's not about the prize money. :-) I liked option of multiple votes in the multiple-award categories, but not the best-of show. Interestingly, I only voted for my own entries in categories I was a submitter in - I tiny bit awkward, but I think it was fine. I was glad for the split of the "Papercraft in Action" category. There's room for another category or two if the community wants it. Any non-multi-day-holiday month is OK with me. (Not Nov/Dec) I think so. Wasn't qualified to enter the other categories. Was happy to vote multiply on them! "What could be improved about the process?" My answers: A closer tie from the voting to the submissions - is there any way to embed the link to the submissions in the voting choices? Also, promotion could be improved by making it easier to share the entries/voting with other sites.

Awesome as always. It is fun to see designers really let loose.
I also think that I was given too many votes to play with. One vote per category would be enough. Or, if you want multiple votes, do it on a scale related to number of entries. 1 to 5 entries one vote, 6 to 10 entries two votes etc.
As I am not a designer I would like to see more build only categories. Maybe one for army unit, or single building or whatever. Maybe some categories for smaller projects. The Diorama categories feel like they require a huge project to be competitive. MAybe a category for modified models only or stock models only.
Another suggestion would be that no WIP photos be allowed to be posted, save it for the contest.
I look forward to the contest every year, thanks for hosting it.

I really enjoyed it, it ran well, the voting worked, the buildup was nice and the comms were clear. More contestants would be good but this smaller subculture of gaming so I guess its was ok. But big hats of the Squirmydad for running it, i imagine its a very draining time consuming but rewarding venture.

My only real grumble was that the definition of Mixed Media was a bit ambiguous. This may seem like sour grapes as this was the only category I competed in. I'd like to see a stricter definition of Mixed Media and a kit-bashing category. Those hobbyists amongst us who are not proficient artists would have more scope to participate.

Could you provide more detail about what you mean (specifically) about a stricter definition? The winner wasn't a "proficient artist", so I'm confused what you mean. Your entry came in right after mine in that category, and no one has accused me of being an artist either. :-) Honestly, I'm all for crisp definitions - but I can't intuit the difference between your submission and any of the others. (It was pretty awesome in my book, BTW.)

I was thinking in terms of the amount of other media in Mixed Media submissions. Small details like MDF bases and flock textures on papercraft models does not suggest Mixed Media to me. I looked at a couple of superb entries where the none papercraft items were almost negligible and felt they should have been entered as Papercraft in Action. I realise this is very subjective and would probably make judging more difficult. My point about "proficient artists" is based on the fact that I would not feel confident trying to create a model or figure from scratch (I'm simply not that talented) I build stock models, I sometimes change textures and details in Photoshop but if I do anything really creative, it'll be a kit-bash. While I'm happy to throw ideas and suggestions, I leave the hard work to the professionals. For that reason, I'd like to see a specific category for kit-bashers.

I think a kit-bash category could be very interesting

Tileset category is a definite add for the design section.
Kit-bash needs a little definition but seems like a good possibility. I think it would work best with links back to the original product to show what changed with the kit-bash.
A completely separate but follow-on showcase I'd like to look at would be a game or scenario creation competition that would occur the month following the Papercuts competition. It can be a boardgame, rpg, skirmish, or scenarios for an existing rules set with the one big stipulation that the playing pieces and terrain used in the game can only be the ones from the Papercuts competition.

The game or scenario creation would give us non-artist types a chance to get involved, neat idea.

I'm confused. Is the real idea to have a non-kitbash category where the build is purely from built-in options in the kit?
How would the kitbash category be different from Papercraft in Action or Multi-Media?

I think A kit bash would be a modification to a paper model that uses only paper. Adding an extra tower to a building or more windows, something like that. Changing weapons on a figure or doing a re-colour maybe? Is that too easy? I think the stain glass window you added to your entry, oldschooldm would be a good example of a kit bash as it was not part of the original model but was made out of paper (sort of a judgement call on the velum). Multi media would include LED's, moss etc. and papercraft in action tends to be plastic figures mixed with paper terrain, or the other way around, yes? Just my thoughts.

What, exactly would *all* the build categories be? Why break kitbash out again? I'm not asking for the definition of a kitbash, but the (3?) judging categories. Would the existing categories stay the same (kitbashes allowed in Papercraft in Action and Multi-media) or be different? That's why I asked if what gothique was really getting at a new "no-bash/all-stock build" category instead. If it was at all unclear the lines were with just two build categories, heaven help us if we create a third without clear definitions. :-) I don't know if an all-stock category is possible, as almost 0 kits come with backdrops... As a note, most if not all of the winners of all of the "diorama" categories to date have featured some level of kit-bashing, so that's why I'm so confused.

The diorama category could be broken down like this. 1. Stock mixed media - includes non-paper craft items such as miniatures, but all paper craft items are not modified in any way. 2. Open mixed media - includes non-paper craft items, and allows for paper craft items to be modified by the builder 3. Stock Paper craft in action - all paper craft, no modification to the models. 4. Open paper craft in action - all paper craft, modification allowed.
You could do the same thing with a vehicle or Army unit category also.
I think the main idea is to create more opportunities for people to enter the contest. In my opinion, the contest feels very targeted to designers. More categories focusing on builds would be more inclusive towards the folks who just love to build paper models.

cowboyleland hit the nail on the head as far as my definition of kitbash. Introducing parts from other models, or even other designers, as details (eg chimneys) would also fit the definition. I really like the new category suggestions by cadia134
