So managed to make some progress on getting textures applied , still need to do some 3 dimensional shading on pilings and cross braces, and add some more water level stains, algae/accretions effects and water reflections, but here are some pics of how it stands at the moment. By cutting the staircase smaller than the backdrop ( although I cut it too small on this test) I was able to cut diagonal slots in the corners to anchor the staircase to the backdrop, as well as some slots in other places. I'll make cut lines on the final backdrop version to make this easier to do. You can make them out in the pictures. Water Stairs-Hollow Spiral- Basic Textures applied: the seperate backdrop ( and a cluttered table!) Straight on view from the front: View down from the top: from the left side: Close up of one of the base corners where you can make out the diagonal slot in the backdrop for the smaller cut Stair piece to slot into: Quasi 3/4 Top down view from the right side: Close ups of the top left and top right corners: Oh, and just as an FYI, I've basically been teaching myself Photoshop/GIMP/Paint.net and InDesign for PDF creation for less than a month!

OMG! Wonderful! That no-glue slot-in backdrop idea is awesome all on it's own - I've just been gluing the backdrop on - but that way the backdrop can be larger than the stair model.
I can't wait to get this submission (and build your upcoming Docks model).
Thanks for being the first full submission for the "Hollow Staircase" model! I hope your build in inspirational for the other designers taking on the more complex models.

Thanks for all the comments and "Likes"...I'm not sure about how everyone sets their print areas, but my printer allows margins as low as 1/8" ( .125/.13" or 3mm) on US Letter or A4 sized paper, so that is normally what I print at... Lately I have been designing at the cutfile areas, and I'm still not clear how much of my design I can have outside or overlaying the registration marks.. Here are some pictures of my PS work area showing how my design overlays the registration marks.. looking at these 2 in the Process: Submit to the Designer Staircase thread, I'm going to need to make some white space on the top and bottom of the Staircase design at least. cardboard-warriors.proboards.com/post/67273/threadcardboard-warriors.proboards.com/post/67091/thread

So made some more progress, and passed the PSD files to oldschooldm, and there are still some things to polish up, but here is what this is currently looking like.. backdrop printed out, in this view, if you notice along the bottom edge of the 2nd piling from the top, there is a tan line.. There is an "L" cut there for a tab to be inserted in... Stairs Printed out: Since I saw in previous test builds that the backdrop wanted to get wavy and lift a bit, I thought of scoring and folding the unprinted edges of the backdrop and folding them under to stiffen the edges: Backdrop assembled-- This is the easy part! (Note the door added and on the backdrop a rope to get up to it!) Staircase trimmed to size, cut and scored, ready for folding: Staircase after folding, ready to be assembled to backdrop: Remember at the beginning when I mentioned the tan line and the "L" shaped slot? This is for the a portion of the staircase to insert into, unfortunately there is no way to get a really good picture of this, but I hope this conveys the idea: After this, I then insert the tabs made by the stairs closest to the back wall, and the one made by cutting out the tallest of the openings along the forward staircase section: After this, it is going around and inserting the corners.. Make some adjustments to be sure everything lines up well and you are ready to go: And oh yeah... that rope is still there, it just gets a bit harder to reach... And even all assembled, it will still fold flat...
