What do you think about 2d buildings? Here is my example. 


First, the 2D structure is quite simple structure. Not only to cut but also glue. No need to worry about many elements and sheets of paper. Which and where fits ... We just all in one piece (for the time being, I reflect on the possibility of modification).



3D buildings and 2D, as a rule, are decoration. Rarely encounter cardboard cottage, inns, workshops, etc., Which have the ability to open doors or windows. These are the elements of the scenery as 2D buildings. Here too I on considering some elements of the modification.



The two-dimensional surface structures saving surface. It happens that we haven't enough space on the shelf, and we want to share his collection / diorama. Come to the aid of 2D structures that are not only suitable climate. Also allow the show to collect several buildings on a small plane.



The last point is rather directed for artists-designers. 2D sketching building, you do not need to have special software or extensive knowledge. Some of you probably do not convince a new idea, but I would like each of you to rethink the concept of 2D structures. Will always be a slight distaste for "flat buildings," but if we have the imagination for 2D cardboard figures why not have her in relation to building a 2D cardboard?

I think you are right about 2d buildings working for dioramas and they might work well as scenic borders to a skirmish or large battle game where the game has a limit. In role playing games, there is no idea of "you can't go there." If you "mention" or depict a cottage or other building there is always the chance a player will go to investigate, and the game master will have to improvise something anyway.

I'm always fascinated by how we separate "2D" from "3D" so discreetly, when all of the models we build, even flat ones, are strictly 3D.

Not to be too pedantic, but how many "D" is this model:



I think it's about 2.5D or so. :-) Made of completely flat parts that hold each other up on a table.

I use flat (2.1D?) backdrops all the time, especially for photos, but need to add extra "D" support to hold it up during use.

When I think of getting close to 2.0D, I don't think backdrops (which stand up, so you can look around them and want to go into them), but maps - which are on a plane that it's hard to penetrate or get behind/go inside.

Now, honestly, I don't care about what fraction between 2- and 3D a model is.  It's pretty meaningless as a number.

It seems each model has a range of purposes - and I'm really excited to see everyone testing the limits of the form. :-)

I would LOVE it if someone started making large-format (multi-page) backdrops for play-time terrain settings - such as a town, a Forrest, a mountain range, etc. I'd buy every single one and build them immediately. Don't care what D it is, but should store-flat!

for a wargame you need 3d models for line of sight . a 2d building will be used only for classical wargames like DBM . but you can create doors, windows for some elements in 3d. You have a 3d structure but with architectural element in 2d it's classical : les trompe l'oeil
