I've taken the plunge and started up a page on Patreon. Right now it's a three part Steampunk webcomic epic of material that dates back to 1992! Talk about jumping on the Steampunk bandwagon. I hopped on a few years after it got rolling, but never looked back. There will be game material available. I'm looking at making paper minis and paper models as well and some kind of print and play board game along with ephemera such as paper dolls, etc. www.patreon.com/okumarts Main comics page: okumarts.com/contraption.html

Awesome! I can't wait. Can you tell me more about what a "Mover and Shaker" receives?

Thanks Tom, this will include mods to existing minis and colour options not available in sets. I usually make more colour variations than I use in a regular set of minis, this rank will also get write ups and game material not released for the regular patrons. Most of this material won't make it into other products, so it's nice to be able to share it with people. I have also made many mods of old minis I have made that I haven't shared with people so this is also a place where I can put them.

and done, not a mover and shaker, but 10 i can do Thank You! I am just uploading the last of the comic pages in the next couple of hours and I'll be setting up the paper mini and world building goals for this month. The nice thing is that this will also enable me to finish off some old projects and provide a place to put the outstanding minis that are just floating around, or are almost done and just need that "push".

So, does that mean instead of Movers & Shakers, you get Shakers & Bakers?

June's theme is "Girl Power!" Just out of curiosity...can we infer from this pic that your workflow involves analog pencils and inks on illustration board, rather than drawing from scratch on screen? Do you scan before or after coloring? (Feel free not to answer, if it's a trade secret! )

My workflow generally starts with analog pencils and inks on paper, but a few sets have been totally digital. I can draw anywhere and I can't always access my laptop to draw stuff. I scan and then colour in photoshop.
No trade secrets. I should probably do a tutorial someday.

This month I am working on Odd D&Ds (oddities) critters. So there will be a Xorn, an owlbear mama and her cubs, a mind flayer, that sort of thing.

I'm totally looking forward to this set, but be sure to stay away from WotC's product identity (or whatever it's called) monster names. "Mind flayer" is on the no-fly list, along with beholder, displacer beast, and slaad, among others. I'm pretty sure you can include a creepy, tall skinny dude in a robe with an octopus where his head should be, but you have to call it something other than "mind flayer".

I'm thinking that the Brain Sucker will only be on Patreon and not in a commercial set. Note the quotes around "Mind Flayer".

You can always just release them as pay what you want on DM's guild after they've been on the Patreon for awhile. That's what printable heroes did with his beholder and Orcus miniatures.

The Mind Flayer is in a special class of "no go" Intellectual Property. www.d20srd.org/faq.htmI'm pretty sure that if you release it only thru DM's guild, you're ok, since that's a WotC-sanctioned venue. I'm not entirely sure that Patreon counts as "non-commercial" anyway, since people are paying to subscribe to your content. I think it's the name that matters under the OGL, though--you should be able to release a squid-faced humanoid monster, so long as you don't call it a mind flayer.

Blarg, I'm probably just going to not do one. I have no idea how this new DM's Guild thing works. It confuses me. Easier to just draw my own stuff.

Since I can't draw worth a darn, let me throw my two pence in here. David, I would much rather see your works that you bring to life in your own way, than you trying to interpret someone else's vision without adding your own touches in there. If I want to see WotC material, I'll go look for it. From you, I want to experience your visions in the way that you want them to be seen. If your visions touch me, I'll drop a few dollars your way to say thanks for bringing something I can't do to life. Now, this is not to say that if you want to do them, enjoy yourself. Don't feel pressured to do something because it is "expected" of you to do it. Scratch that itch, if need be and have fun with it.

Honestly, I think I may have figured it out and I had some neat ideas while I was out walking today. Thanks guys. I agree that my ideas are what and always have driven me in this and every artistic pursuit I've given a damn about. I am passionate about what I create and I think it's important to be true to one's vision. This may not always be to everyone's taste, but it is much more fun and worthwhile.
