I'm sure some of you will have been following news from the New Horizons spaceprobe which flew past Pluto and its satellite Charon last month, as its data slowly trickles back to Earth over the next year and a half. Thanks to public voting earlier this year for suggested feature names to be found on both worlds, based on the International Astronomical Union's naming rules, the first informal names are starting to be applied. Hopefully, these will mostly, if not all, become officially sanctioned eventually. For now though, you may care to download some of the free online annotated images (mostly available as both JPEGs and PDFs) and see, for example, where "Cthulhu Regio" lies, along with Balrog Macula, Mordor Macula, Nemo, Ripley, Skywalker, Organa, Vader, Kirk, Spock, Uhura, Sulu and Alice (Here's Looking at You, Glassy Girl) Craters, and plenty more. They're available via: www.ourpluto.org/mapsand pluto.jhuapl.edu/Multimedia/Science-Photos/ . I'd also recommend downloading the free four-page PDF table with explanations for all the names suggested so far: drive.google.com/file/d/0B978_2rRzhLLc2RNcFcyV1NXcUE/view (linked from the sites above too). I found it fascinating, as there's a lot more than just fantasy and SF names involved. I suspect some of our mini designers may even find inspiration for something fresh among the mythological items particularly, as Pluto enjoys a number of Underworld-themed proposals.
