I'm not sure how many of you are familiar with Toposolitario's I-Kubes. Easy-build, fold-flat storage. www.toposolitario.com/workshop/ikube.htmlAt one time Topo sent me a set of these done by Palanko (not sure who that is). Four sets of Favalas and a set of medieval buildings. You may remember mproteau's modular roof test, cardboard-warriors.proboards.com/thread/6182/help-testing-modular-roof-system. I know that folks like interiors. Here is the idea. Make a two-page building. First page is the exterior. Second page is a 97% scale of the same building, only the interior, with the roof section becoming the floor. Top off with mproteau's modular roof, that also folds flat. The exterior box slides over the interior box, so you can lift it off and have your interior. What do you think? Needless to say, this idea just sort of hit me, so I haven't even checked into whether Marcos or mproteau would grant permission, but if it doesn't seem like something people would use, I won't pursue it

Sounds like a good idea.

First off, I'm not in the mood to be proprietary with paper modelling - if there's something I've done that you think you want to work with, let me know and I'll do what I can to help!
Second - let me see if I understand your proposal. You've got a fold-flat-ish kind of box with no lid - the textures are on the interior of the box, not the outside. That's the interior of your building. Then, you make another fold-flat-ish box that is slightly larger than the first, only the textures are on the outside now. Then, you've got some roof mechanism that breaks down so you can make it look like a building. Does that sound right?
I'm all for trying out new things, and this sounds like it would work great for some people. I personally am not a fold-flat kind of guy, and if I can use something like TLX instead, I'd prefer to do that. I find it is more compact, less likely to warp over time that way, and there are fewer edges to possibly weaken or tear after a lot of reuse. I don't want to get into a discussion about the merits of those statements - it's my experience alone, and so it'd be like discussing religion or politics. But, some folks love that stuff, and if people are into it, then I say do it!
It'd be interesting to see how you might adapt that to other building shapes, other than boxy buildings. Once I get my mind away from a totally generic modular system, and into a system where a specific structure can be built, I'm sure it'd work out just fine. A lot of Ravenfell buildings work great folding flat, and not all of them are just big boxes.
If there's anything I can do to help you prototype things, let me know!

The interior box needs to be set up to flipped so that doors and windows 'almost' line up with the outside doors and windows. Basically building the I-kube inside out, so that the interior printing is visible on the inside. But now that I think about it, I don't think they will build inside out. I'll have to check it out and do a mock-up. But this makes me think that the concept does have some merit
Yes, it would only be workable on boxy buildings

Okay, this version of Palanko's cottage shows why it needs a roof. I just threw this together, so I haven't looked at the roof yet Taking off the exterior, you have the interior, which I reduced by 96%, not knowing how the wall thickness would possibly cause binding. Had to reposition and rotate the wall panels so that the box results in an interior. The floor texture is the one I came up with for the floor of the chariot. Seeing it in the building shows that I got really lucky on the first texture I worked up. And it all breaks down. I think this brings me to the point that a roof is worthwhile. But right now I am going to have to get back to Bruno's horses

By the way, when I went to bed last night, I was thinking this would make a good reasonably cat-proof storage box for small pieces of models that I am working on. I should have gotten up right then and there. Bruno's horse is missing a leg and is somewhat chewed on the haunches ... grrr

Don't know why it's hard to stop playing around with these, but I made a little box to put some of my Victorian Era pieces. Really needs a roof. It would work better for modern buildings with flat roofs. When I went to the store today, I'd planned on taking a photo of an old Sinclair mini-station, but like so many old unique buildings, it is gone now. I could see these used for strip malls and all sorts of small shops. And they store other stuff! Boxes sure are popular these days

Well I'm not sure why the new Acrobat messed me up, but I came up with a roof yesterday The roof cap clip works well, but could be simplified. I think I will reduce the roof overhang. I may have to switch to FoxIt, or another alternative. If Actual Size reduces that much with the new version of Reader, that is too small for 28-30 mm. I'm going to transfer all of my templates to Letter, so that there will be consistency in printing. Next version will use my own textures and include a chimney. If it all printed out uniformly, the locking tabs for each module will help hold the module above in place.

I like very much all Topo stuff; I think I'll steal your good idea to make interior for the original sci-fi version of the Ikube. I tend to build "fixed" stuff and turn scenery into boxes would be an added value.

I believe the interior box should be done at 97% to 98% of normal size, not 96%. 96% is too loose. I guess it depends on the thickness of cardstock you use. BTW, the cat figured out how to knock the box off the shelf and ruined Bruno's horse pieces. I was ticked off

Sounds like the cat needs to be shipped to Abu-Dhabi.... or the Chinese restaurant
