So to go with the March Forum Hoard topic of Landubbers Need Not Apply, I've been working off and on for a small utility style boat design based on a wooden model I have of a boat called the "San Jose" The Hull is interesting, as it is pretty much straight up from the waterline, so I've gotten a fairly good start on it over the last day: A little fine tuning and work on the interior details, and this should turn out nicely. Also going to work on a detachable bottom hull for when people would like it pulled up on shore. This style of boat will function well as a small pilot boat for entering harbors or sailing up rivers, or as a small fishing boat or net tending boat, or even as a small boat for on a larger ship.

Have you considered doing a waterline model that would simply slide over a lower hull piece? I was toying with that for a model I was going to use as the base geometry for the ships bow. Just curious. On some of the models I've looked at, it just wouldn't work, but I think it should on this one.
But then again, you wouldn't be able to have your base on there. Oh, well

Oh, well I'm still working on the mechanics... possible a slightly raised (recessed) base on the waterline model so it slips over the lower hull, or a tab arrangement similar to some of FatDragon's dormers to hold the two pieces together, or a combination.

Would a hole in the bottom of the waterline part that lines up with a simple 'lock' work? Set them up at 90 degrees to each other so that all you have to do is insert and twist.

I think you're looking at the "problem" the wrong way 'round. To me, it seems as if you wanted to start with a waterline modell instead of a complete ship/boat.
How about this: Build the boat in its total, including the keel. Then build a water base in form of a box with a ship-shaped hole in one of the faces. Boat on land, just lay it on its keel on the map. Boat in water, put the boat upright into the box-base.
Given, the box will give you a raised waterline. For harbors or coastlines, you could simply raise the land as well. On the plus side: You could build the box to fold flat for easy storage...
