The theme for this month's HOARD is VSF and Steampunk This can be any sort of miniature figure or model on the above theme or feel free to submit miniatures off theme. If you submit a figure, they must include both front and rear art, have a proper trimming outline, and include instructions for multi-part models. Recolors and figure mods are encouraged, and even uncolored designs are welcome. No nudity or sexuality, but bloody gory and horrifying is encouraged. If you have questions about how to design your entries, like formats, resolution, and stuff like that, see the HOARD GUIDELINES in this forum category. Entries for the Hoard will be accepted until the last day of July, 2016. I'm really excited about this one. I've been studying a lot of Steam-powered devices that just didn't take off. English Steam Carriages should have been ongoing, but were pretty well driven out by the railways. The Eole probably was the first steam-powered flight. And Steampunk wonky buildings. This Hoard can be a lot of fun

I'm curious how many vehicles exploded at this exhibition.

I doubt there were that many. I've only read about two of the steam carriage lines had explosions and those were both following crashes.

Another great steampunk page is Dr. Grordbort's Infallible Aether OscilatorsIt's Weta Worshops (They're also Sideshow I think). This was (is) a series of cosplay props and assorted silliness. Very entertaining....go read the testimonials page, they're a hoot.... GM64

Hmm... quit tempting subject... Just love some of posted ideas/pics/resources!!! But I'm dedicated to "Cardboard WARRIORS" - so mostly 2D paper minis, figurines of warriors, soldiers etc. or... some 2D props. IMHO paper-made stricte-2D minis of vehicles and props in many cases might be more immersive than any paper 2.5D or 3D (well, painted with details, quality metal/plastic/resine minis... these are different case;) Now... I really, really like this Hoard theme, got some ideas and I'm really interested... but only as "2D cardboard minis and props" provider...

I totally understand. I really hope to have a steam carriage, similar to the Gurney Steam Carriage for this Hoard. I plan on doing it similarly to Kiladecus's Camel FAAV, cardboard-warriors.proboards.com/thread/4340/era-war-camel-faav. Sides done so that you can have two 2d carriages or one 3d. I also envision it with the option to replace the boiler on the back with seats and the steering mechanism up front with a tongue for a team of horses. I think that in many cases, 2d will be the option for more than half of those who will use it. For those who want 3d, I doubt this will have the detail that they want, so I may or may not do a 'model' version down the road. I've gotten a bit of a jump on the sides, but still need to work out how to do the steering (without it being to fiddly, or too simplified) and the boiler. Even from this one designer, there are several configurations that were in use. I've got a little time, and I really want to do this one right One thing that concerns me is the size of these beasts. I don't want to have a 7-page model for something that I want to be fairly simple to build

I had a good idea too, but I open as Macbeth in a week so my month has been too busy. Maybe I can do it in August. I thought it might have been good enough for Paper cuts too. Oh, well.

I'm impressed, too. I've only done parts in Shakespeare 'exerpts'. Never a full play

Thanks guys, don't be too impressed until I pull it off. It still could be a train wreck but I am less nervous about it than I was about Prospero last year. I was actually too excited to sleep last night because I went over my lines after 9pm and got all pumped up about the swordfight! Good thing rehearsal goes 2-10pm today.

How is your show handling the severed head? In the four productions that I worked on of Macbeth only one of them has done a good job dealing with that point in the script.

The version I directed years ago we got a kid straight out of film prop school to make us a latex head based on a cast of the actors head. It was awesome!(IMHO) This years director still has not quite decided on the balance of realism and symbolism. It might be just a lump in a bloody pillowcase, it might be a "soft sculpture" of stuffed cotton or it might be an "off the shelf" severed head. I am never on stage with it, so I am concentrating on other things. Mostly diction, actually. What was the solution you liked, squirmydad?

The bloody sack with a cabbage in it was okay, the two severed head versions (one done in a latex cast by a costumer finishing here master's degree) caused "tittering" from the audience, especially the one done by the master costumer, and it kind of broke the mood of the scene or stole focus from Macduff's final victory speech. The last, and most effective imho, was Macduff entering and gesturing towards the back of the audience as he says his line and a light came up casting a shadow silhouette of a head on a spike. Made for a better visual with him pointing out and the shadow appearing huge behind him.
The problem with live theatre is that there are people there watching, and it's not a movie, so people's natural reaction to a prop head is, "that's fake." Of course it is ya ninny. :/

The best prop I ever made was a severed head for a guy in Treasure Island. The director wasn't sure what to do about the scene (the pirate runs off....then his head rolls back on)...she was thinking about cutting it. But seeing as I was the one who was suppose to pick it up and deliver the funniest line in the whole play, I offered to make it (and the other actor was willing to let me try to make a plaster cast of his face). The whole thing was done on the cheap by basically making a mask with surplus silicone caulking....then building up layers around a styrofoam wig head with caulking and attaching the mask. It turned out better than I expected. Because it was mostly silicone, the thing bounced around the stage like crazy...but miraculously it came to a stop every single night right at my feet. All I had to do was pick it up and say "He's dead...?!?!" Got a huge laugh every time. The guy asked me if he could keep his head after the show was done. He keeps it on a shelf in his office....he'a child psychologist...he counsels troubled teens... GM64

Great story grendelsmother64 I love it when props find a life after a show. We've decided to go with a ball in a bloody sack. The director's husband is a surgeon and he says our fake blood is convincing, so we have decided to use as much of it as possible. We did two runs today. It is going to be good. Sorry to all those uninterested for hijacking this thread. I will do a super-awesome-cool VSF figure in August as penance.

I am going to decide between now and Tuesday which one of my projects I am going to try to get done. I think that if I can get a jump on it Tuesday, and keep from getting distracted, I should be able to get a steam carriage done or a smaller version of the New York Life building in Kansas City. The building would probably be the easiest, if I only make it four floors tall. But the steam carriage seems to be the historical side-note that needs to be remembered. Dunno

Egads - a mere 5 days 'til the end of the month and not a submission in sight! Anyone have something up there sleeve? If anyone is looking for some inspiration and steampunk isn't totally your think, there's also the warforged from Eberron which would make cool minis. I'm trying to imagine if there's any way my limited graphical talents can contribute...

I had what I considered to be great ideas, but July has been a huge time thief... Yep! Especially for those who decided to last-minute Win10 migration... like me:) Well, have to say that even after some experiences with this version on notebook I'm still feeling somehow awkward on my main rig, thankfully older PS versions and other custom project and graphic software seems to be working fine, although with some strange/uncommon differences here and there - so as for now I'm kinda 20% less productive, but hope that it will change/improve after some time, if not I'll have to withdraw to Win7. Anyway, here's another version of Steampunk Vehicle (Glider:) I'd like to experiment with some turret or autonomous gun on top. Please note that "driver" is here only for scaling purposes (actually final version would be probably without any man/driver figurine, so user can add his own preferred one or some flag, antenna, machine-gun/turret whatever etc.) But will need for this another week or so...
