I've been getting pretty regular requests for packs of hero/adventurer figures. I actually find making hero packs very intimidating. Mainly, because there are SOOOO many possible combos, and players deserve models that represent their characters well, while GMs can just keep using the same ogre figure for anything remotely ogre-sized and shapes, and it's good enough. I feel I have a lot more "wiggle-room" when designing mobs. (Also, bravesirkevin has a ton of beautiful heroes already available, that are 1000X better then anything I could provide.) That said, if I'm playing in a fairly "permanent" game, I'll make paper figures for our party. I might as well round-up these characters and release them in packs. Every now and then, I'm going to release a 6-pack of heroes. They will be a combo of characters from games I'm involved in, and characters I just feel like drawing at the time, when I want to take a break from drawing monsters and crank out a dwarven paladin or something. Here's 4 of the 6 doods that will be in Hero Pack 1: Also, feel free to suggest a race/class combo you'd like to see Trash-Mobbed. There is no guarantee I'll make one, but, sometimes I need a nudge for inspiration.

A while ago, jeffgeorge posted an excellent halfling fighter. I realized that I don't really have a look for my halflings "locked in." Also, I think WotC does a poor job differentiating gnomes & halflings in their published artwork. I want to start developing how gnomes & halflings will be portrayed in my hero packs. Today I sketched some halfling fighters of my own. Maybe halfling will continue along this model, maybe not. Honestly, I just like exploring design. (Admins, if posting design sketches and concepts for possible models are too off-target for this forum, lemme know, don't wanna' get smacked with the ban-hammer)

Heck, no! Seeing the process helps us all. Not only in gaining a greater appreciation of your talents, but to inspire others. Some designers don't want to share the process at all. I think they are afraid that someone will steal their ideas. That you are comfortable enough to share ideas, brings a smile to this old face. Share what you wish to share. bravesirkevin's art books quadruple the value of his outstanding figures. Perhaps I'm a bit different, but in curiosity about how designers come up with their wonderful work, I think we all share in that.

I like them. I agree with what you say - neither WotC nor Paizo seem to clearly define the difference between gnomes and halflings. I'm a traditionalist, for me halflings are big, hairy-footed fellas. Possibly with slightly outsized heads. I'm not sure about the pointy ears on yours - of the two species, I would have thought of gnomes as more "fey", while halflings are more part of this world and human-like. If that makes any sense.....? But I look forward to seeing more of what you come up with - please post as much design work as you can!!!

I once had stats worked out that averaged the Gnome and Halfling D&D races. In that world "Gnome" was what they called themselves and "Halfling" was a pejorative term that humans used on them. I did that because I couldn't find a meaningful difference between the races in the 3.5 rules. The biggest one mentioned in the rule books is preferences in facial hair, (like that wouldn't vary by individual and change with time and fashion.) I think the original (AD&D) concept of gnomes was kind of "Dwarf lite" but I never found a need for that and it doesn't distinguish them much. Eberron made halflings dino-riders and Forgotten Realms (I think) made Gnomes gagety inventors. But really that is a cultural difference, sentient races are going to adapt to their environments and domesticate the available animals. Officially the big hairy feet are gone, but lots of people still like the idea. I don't know why I am babbling on here. Just throwing up ideas, I guess.

If that makes any sense.....? But I look forward to seeing more of what you come up with - please post as much design work as you can!!! I've been viewing halflings as a composite of Tolkien, 3E and a bit of kender from the old Dragonlance novels. I'm really pushing exaggerated features, because I feel a lot of the 3E art required a halfling to be standing next to a normal-sized thing to read as a halfling, since they pretty much were just tiny humans/elves. I want a character to stand alone and still obviously be a halfling. I almost exclusively play D&D, so most of my opinions are from a D&D context. Disclaimer: This will be an unpopular opinion, but, it is ENTIRELY opinion: I've never actually liked gnomes as a race. They always seemed to be this weird "middle ground" between dwarves and halflings, that never really felt necessary to me. I don't really feel like discussing all my thoughts on this, because it's honestly not important. The design cues I've always used to keep my halflings and gnomes looking different, is giving halflings pointy ears, childish features and wide faces. Gnomes get big, rounded jug-ears, and more exaggerated features. I'll keep tinkering with these designs from time to time, but, here's a very loose sketch of how I keep 'em unique from each other.

Ha! cowboyleland you must've responded while I was already typing. I totally agree with you! Lots of the gnome elements could easily be absorbed by dwarf or halfling crunch (subraces perhaps?) But yeah, "halfling with beard" doesn't necessitate an entire race of it's own! Gnomes are the appendix of playable races. This weird, vestigial artifact that nobody needs, and sometimes makes things worse. That said, I know a LOT of people like gnomes, and I'm hoping I can change my mind by exploring their design.

I always thought 'Gnomes are to Dwarves like Halflings are to Humans'
Certainly not well spelled out, because I don't think it has a definitive answer

As far as "lore" is concerned, WOTC seems to have turned gnomes into hobbits and halflings into tiny gypsies. Probably trying to put some distance between themselves and the Tolkien estate, bad blood between them happened in the early TSR days.

Personally, I see gnomes as being from Faerie, along with the elves, and therefore, they should have pointed ears. Halflings originated in this realm, and are closely tied to humans, and accordingly, should have rounded ears. In fact, I might go so far as to say that in Faerie (or Feywild), gnomes are to elves as halflings are to humans in this world--a smaller, less assertive race that has evolved a more laid-back world view that allows them to coexist with a larger, more ambitious race. This may be why there seem to be so many similarities between gnomes and halflings--they occupy vaguely similar niches in different worlds.
Similarly, I see goblins (including hobgoblins and bugbears) as the fey analog to the orcs and ogres of this world. And here again, I'd put pointed ears on goblinoids, but round ears on orc-kin.
Gnomes have nothing to do with dwarves, beyond the superficial similarity of being short and bearded, by the way. Dwarves are from under the earth, and quite possibly originally from the Elemental Plane of Earth, so they don't figure in three-race (big, small, and savage) constellations found in either Faerie or the mundane world.

Hmmm, see, this is why I have so much trouble with gnomes. Are they dwarf hobbits? Are they elf hobbits? Are they their own thing that isn't a hobbit? Screw it, they're ALL tinkers now. Going the Dragonlance route, oversized wrenches and goggles for everyone!
