I have looked over the LV86 Onager from the Genet archive, and it has the ramp door. From reading the Chris' blog I was under the impression that the original Onager (LV84) had the ramp door, and the updated one the sliding kind (renamed to LV86, with trailers added). Did that idea got scrapped, and the old Onager just got greater detail textures and a rename, or models got mixed up, or I misunderstood it all?
Aside from itching to see the the other model, I am interested in the proper name, since I assembled the archived Onager over the last two days, and I need to know how to name the thread in the "Genet Gallery" subforums.
Whichever the current Onager is, it is a fine model.

All of my Onagers have a date of December, 2010, and they had the ramp doors

It was from July 2011 blog post. Probably one of the unfinished projects then.

Yeah, I don't think I ever finished the LV86 overhaul with the trailers. The LV84 is the one without the trailer hitch setup. I *think* the LV84 did get a texture update at some point, but that was years ago so I'm not 100% sure.

The model in "Ebbles Miniatures 2010-2011" is currently tagged as LV86. I do not see trailer or towing gear in it and it has a ramp, should probably rename it to LV84 (not really an issue, just to prevent confusion if someone goes through your old blog posts).

Out of curiosity, is there any plans to revisit some of your neat old WIPs from your work bench like the trailer idea for the Onager, or that really neat Osprey like plane, or even the Percheron weapons/attachments? Those all looked pretty sweet, even in the concept phase lol!

I don't know, and I probably couldn't even if I wanted to. A lot has changed since then...back in those days I was still in business and still working on commercial model designs. Ever since I made the entire archive free, a lot more people from all over the world have finally had the opportunity to get their hands on kits that they were unable to buy before, and I have to say I really like how much more accessible and inclusive free stuff is than when it's tucked behind a paywall, so I've got a bit of a dilemma on my hands.
Part of the problem is that doing models on a commercial level pretty much requires commercial levels of effort, and if I'm not making that effort pay for itself in some fashion, it gets untenable pretty fast when I don't have a lot of spare time. Like, there's a big difference between taking a Saturday afternoon to bang out a goofy standee of sausage Vikings in a zucchini boat and spending 80+ man-hours on a commercial quality model. Especially if the model is a "this is not fun but is necessary to expand a range and make the others in the same range more usable" type of model.
Also part of the problem is that I also don't do papercraft stuff on the same PC I use for work anymore. I've discovered that it's better for my sanity to have cleanly segregated "this space is for work" and "this space is for personal stuff" zones in the house, otherwise it starts feeling like I'm putting in 16 hour days 7 days a week. So, I've been using my personal iMac and an iPad Pro for papercraft stuff in a different part of the house.
Currently, not all of the software I used for my old models runs on MacOS, and I don't want to install Windows on my iMac because Windows gives me enough headaches at my day job as it is. Even Parallels is kind of ropey--OpenGL apps like Ultimate Papercraft 3D have issues with large texture sizes and slow down hugely, for example. On the bright side, Metasequoia actually has a MacOS version now.
I'm still messing around with papercraft stuff in my spare time, but I haven't really figured out how to make commercial quality stuff worth my while without charging for it yet, and I still want to think on it some more and come up with something that still lets me make stuff available for free while it still carries its own weight.

That's definitely understandable, it wouldn't be any fun to create models if it felt like work, it would just end up burning ya out really fast and would just end up making ya hate it all together. I can't say I've really messed with Apple outside of the iPhone and iPad, I guess I've always been a Windows kinda guy when it comes to PC lol. I personally wish paper models were still profitable for ya, I was more than glad to pay for your models, I think I bought almost every one back in the Ebbles site days, I was always excited on payday cause I knew I was going to get a new model hahahaha. I have to say your models are awesome and the first ones I found that really got me into paper models back in the day of the Ebbles site, between them and the scifi minis here, and I still build them today lol. They never get boring that's for sure, in fact I'm still constantly finding new ways to play and add to GunCrawl, I can't resist it's still my favorite tabletop rule set hahaha! If you do end up making a few pay models in the future for the fun of it I'll definitely gladly pay for them, just cause of the shear amount of joy and fun your models have brought to the tabletop!

As a holder of the CD/DVD, whichever it was, I also firmly put your models into the 'worth paying for' category.
I understand the separation of work from play. I office at home. Each morning I get up and get ready for work. The act of going to the Office helps to maintain discipline and when you are wearing slacks and tie, you aren't tempted to mow or rake leaves. I'm currently down to one computer, a laptop, and after my morning gets going, I take the computer to the other room to check out forums, blogs, etc.
I'm getting a second computer, which is going to be my work computer, which will leave this one for play.
These coaches I'm doing are getting to be like work. Last night, I wanted to finish them up and get them cutter-friendly, but after a 10-hour day, I just didn't feel like it. What's bad is that I did a repaint on one of Volker's Advent Trucks, and I was really excited about it, but I didn't work on it, because I thought I needed to do the coaches first.
What I'm getting at, is that you are on the right track keeping separation between work and play. I totally get it
Back to the topic subject, would you have a problem with any of us posting a kitbash for a trailer and hitch conversion?

uptrainfan89: I appreciate it! Vermin King: Thanks as well! About the trailer conversion, I'm totally fine with that. It's another one of those things where free stuff really simplifies a lot of issues.

VK, you might want to also think about an add-on for those folks who have already done the onager and need to add the trailer hitch. Maybe something as simple as a folded place to add some repositionable glue to both ends of it and stick the two together.

Simplifies and complicates. People tend to be less concerned about designers' wishes with free models. I figured you wouldn't mind. Even when they were Pay models, you encouraged folks to do modifications. But I needed to ask

I did the Onager so long ago and gave it away. I'll have to re-familiarize myself with the model

Very interested to see the trailer/hitch Mod VK, always felt the Onager would make a good expedition/mobile command Vehicle, especially with multiple trailers lol!

I was thinking that if I come up with a good hitch solution and flat trailer, I could leave the other trailers to someone else.
I still need to get these coaches formatted, with a couple variations, and the super-simple versions, so it may be a while before I get to it.
I also had a repaint I did of one of Volker's Wreckers that I really have an itch to finish.
If I don't have something up in a week, remind me

I keep debating on trying to do a mod with the Onager tracks and the Convoy truck beds, I just haven't quite figured out what would be a good hitch solution hahaha.

I know how I would do it, if I were using them in a game, but I don't think that most would like my solution.
It would use magnets.
I'll draw up a sketch at lunch or tonight and show it.

I do like Magnets! The rare earth disk ones I got are pretty cheap for a bunch of them too.

I did take some time to look at the Onager again. My concept would work, but I doubt many would want to do it.
Between the tracks, there is a slanted back piece. My thought was to have a hitch 'box' to put on the back of the powered unit, and the front of the trailer unit. I was thinking that the box would have a piece that divides it inside horizontally, with a slit for a retractable hitch mechanism. Actually, probably two boxes inside.
Has anyone done a convoy/onager conversion?

Sounds like a neat and workable idea! I wanna say I seen a pic somewhere on here that someone did a mod of the Onager with the Convoy Beds, but I can't seem to remember if there was a trailer or if it was just a mod of the Onager itself? Edit: A little ways down on this thread there seems to be a tanker mod for the Onager: link

I'd forgotten about that, though I have it downloaded. Strange, but I have Onager files in '2010' AND '2011'. Odd

Are you just talking about trailers like this; I'll have to dig that model up and look at the trailer hitch as I don't recall exactly what I did. A flat-bed version would be pretty easy to slap on top of the Onager carriage.

Very nice work there. I might not have to do this project, if it is already done. At least it can be put slightly lower in the priority list

Found it, both the pdf and psd versions, tan color only. Onager Trailer ModI also made a simple flatbed mod by dropping a convoy trailer on top of an Onager chassis, can't find those mod files though.

Blast, though. I don't see the hitch files. I have more coach mods than I can build in a month, and started a new project, a bit of Ebbles and a bit of Finger and Toe.
Once I get that done, I think I will pick up the hitch, unless your mod turns up.
Thanks for the trailer mod. I see a lot of potential ideas coming up.

I was looking at this again last night. For the hitch mounting boxes, I'm thinking of using the gray/grey underneath texture. That way the hitch mod can be used with all the color schemes.
I will have to concentrate on this tonight as tomorrow, this computer goes to the shop. Getting a new 'work' computer, which is only for work, so I will have to discipline myself not to use it for anything else ... well ... I can check forums and blogs, but I'm not going to have paper files on it or do design work with it. It is for work.
When I get this one back, I'll be good to go again, though
